Using slowed down fragments of recordings of pedalled piano notes, @stellato-strings touching her violin with the bow, a creaking piano stool and ticking clock, I created this piece using loops and effects on Ableton Live.

It's my contribution to this week's @naviar-records haiku prompt.

The title 'along' is taken from this haiku poem by Takashi Matsumoto:

'Flowing along
changing its colors
a soap bubble.'

Takashi Matsumoto was a Japanese poet originally from Tokyo. Born into a family deeply interested in nō theater, he also devoted himself to it in his youth until 1921, when he came into contact with Hototogisu magazine and haiku poetry. Beginning the following year, Matsumoto became a student of Takahama Kyoshi. In 1946, he launched the magazine Fue 笛 ('The Flute').

As was the case last week, the instructions for this week’s project are fairly detailed, so please read them at disquiet.com/0638 15 (rather than me stuffing them into a post here).

This is the third phase of a three-phase sequence over the course of as many weeks during which, consecutively and asynchronously, musicians build trios together.

You can participate in any or all three of the three projects. If you participated in last week’s project, please note these two things:

    be sure to set your track as downloadable
    to avoid bot issues on Soundcloud, make sure its license is set to allow creative reuse

Also important: In normal circumstances, Junto projects have a one-track-per-participant limit. However, as with the preceding project that led up to this one, you can contribute more than one track this week. The details on that are in Step 5 of the project instructions 9.

This post popped up at disquiet.com/0638 9 (thanks, powers of automation) shortly after 12:10am Pacific Time on Thursday, March 21. (I was asleep at the time.) The email containing those instructions went out around the same time, also automatically, via juntoletter.disquiet.com. (We recently switched over from TinyLetter, because TinyLetter was shut down by its owner, Mailchimp, at the end of last month.) A fairly paired back generative virtual modular patch assembled using VCV Rack, more or less played itself although I did map physical controls so I could guide the overall shape.

- I used FL Studio’s ability to extract stems from the two collaboration tracks
- Imported all of this into a Live Session to have 11 tracks to work with.
- Bounced and split each stereo file to mono files
- Applied various effects - mainly Live’s native ones - and then let it sit for a few hours
- Came back to it very late at night into the morning to stretch, chop, arrange and apply another generation of effects - this time mainly M4L devices, with a few odd VSTs - until it sounded "complete" to me. I didn't need to add anything more to this.
