We first featured Fiesta Soundsystem on the site last year when he contributed the 33rd mix in our podcast series. Since then things have been quickly heating up for the London-based artist who has released a string of no-holds-barred records on labels such as Scuffed Records, Time Is Now, and Mask Music.

Fiesta Soundsystem has such a knack of bringing together fiery bass workouts and acid euphoria to create a unique blend of future-focused jungle and drum & bass. Now he lands on Of Paradise with a killer 4-tracker ‘Not To Be’, out this Friday. Ahead of the release, we have the exclusive stream of the closing track ‘The Slip’ - a hypnotic dnb roller that perfectly highlights his dark side.

Rising UK talent @dyslecta arrives on Scuffed Recordings with three new hybrid UK techno tracks, backed with a heavyweight remix from @henzotrax.

On his ‘Eating Woodlice’ EP, Dyslecta continues his artistic growth with three tracks exploring different BPM ranges and production techniques, fused by his love of techno and other UK dance music genres.

Describing the EP as being ‘testament to what you can do with the most limited amount of samples and kit’, the release sees Dyslecta unifying a broad range of production techniques while maintaining a recognisable sonic backbone throughout.

London-based producer Dufraine kicks off 2024 on Scuffed Recordings with three new stomping hybrid electro tracks on his Uber XL EP.

Continuing the sounds Dufraine has explored on previous solo efforts for labels like APE-X and Fantastic Voyage, and his Pleasure Corp project alongside Shawn Cartier, the Uber XL EP features three darker, harder-edged tracks taking in influences from artists like Miss Kittin and The Hacker alongside sounds inspired by UK bass, dubstep, and techno.

The EP kicks off with the four-to-the-floor aggression of ‘Wake’, driven along by a warping acid bassline. Up next is the title track, which features robotic vocal stabs and skittering synths. Closing out the EP is the most electro-influenced track of the release, ‘The Feeling’, centered around a powerful breakbeat backbone and eerie vocal sample.

Dufraine - Uber XL EP (Previews)

Dark Heaven boss Vorp delivers his debut EP ‘I Plead The Filth’ in January 2024, comprising four original compositions of dynamic breaks, techno and electro leaning material.

The Chicago, USA based Dark Heaven has operated an event series in the US for some time, welcoming many talents locally and from further afield, the leading figure in the events, Vorp, has been at the forefront since its inception and played nearly every event. Just recently Vorp initiated the launch of the affiliate label for Dark Heaven, kicking things off with a collective compilation of tracks from artists associated with Dark Heaven or those he is a fan of, this project also inaugurated his own Vorp alias and here he returns to the label with a fresh full length EP which he describes as ‘a projection of my life and a reflection of the world as I interpret it. “I Plead The Filth” is a concoction of breaky electro and acidic techno intended for the late-night rave hours.’’

‘Up The Wazoo’ opens and sets the tone perfectly, Vorp implements the voice of Dark Heaven co-founder Asha for the lyrics “where you wanna go, I can take you where you wanna go” while the track itself utilises crisp electro drums, ever shifting, oscillating synth melodies and murky bass drones. Title-track ‘I Plead The Filth’ then offers up gritty saturated drums, loopy hypnotic stabs and gnarly bass throughout.

On the b-side ‘Spiritronica’ sees Vorp venture into more hazy electronica realms via dreamy textural pads, twitchy acid licks and a bumpy 4/4 rhythm. ‘Wetallica’ then rounds out the EP on a straight acid techno tip, merging fluttering 303 lines with resonant sirens, ethereal chords and thunderous drums.

Hey this is Skwirl here to gab at you briefly about the records we have coming for this year’s thematic cluster! The theme is Nostalgic Wavs and each record has been linked to a concept under the rather large umbrella of nostalgia as a function of emotional attachment to memory. 


The fourth record for Nostalgic Wavs is Spoke’s endlessly colourful and spirited LP ‘You Make Me Feel Dramatic’ and it’s our Déjà Vu selection.

Déjà Vu is a concept that needs no introduction as an estimated 97 percent of people have experienced it at least once. It is categorised as a strong familiarity with a present situation or experience - to the extent of believing it has been perceived or experienced before - despite it being new. We’ve mapped it as restorative, present, unknowing on our Nostalgic Wavs map.

Spoke is a queer, non binary German producer based in Berlin known most prominently for their blistering hip hop productions that have become a fixture in the international, experimental, and non-traditional fringes of the Berlin Deutschrap scene. Spoke started their musical career as a DJ in Berlin in the late 2000s, amidst a cascade of grime and garage migrating from the UK en route to the thumps and stomps of the techno capital -  that fertile ground of cross pollination and the exciting rise of the German beat scene can still be found reverberating through their work now.


Indeed, when arriving upon what the LP for Woodland Creatures would sound like we found mutual excitement in exploring their roots in club music both classic and contemporary, pop and underground. A stint living in the UK some years back had solidified their love for garage, drum and bass and the wider UK funky continuum; and, this merged with a keen infatuation with stateside movements like jersey house, juke and footwork in the years since moving back to Berlin - all culminating in a collision of style, sounds and ethos that had been percolating in them for quite some time. 

The result is ‘You Make Me Feel Dramatic’, a punchy, short and sweetly diaphanous transatlantic club scene love letter born of Spoke’s personal journey and subterranean explorations which is brimming with immediacy, life, colour and aimed squarely at breathless sweaty dancefloor workouts. Spoke’s authentic filtering of inspirations and synthesised style mashups yields a record that feels impossibly familiar - like club joints you could swear you know but are of course brand new - and speaks of a producer poised to take the audience on a personal journey they might not expect but one that is kaleidoscopic, spritely, infectious, and just flat out fun.

“Victim Of The System” is a 28-track compilation from newly formed label Twin System, with all profits going towards Brixton Soup Kitchen. Twin System is made up of South London-based DJs and producers DJ Baklava, Flytipper, and brothers Billy and Lewi Boome. After gravitating towards certain sonic worlds throughout a residency on Balamii radio and a handful of parties in London & Bristol, ‘Victim Of The System’ arrives as an effort to showcase some of the artists whose music has kept our minds and moods ticking over throughout the lockdown period. Curated in collaboration with friend of the label Junior, and available alongside a tee designed by Rotterdam based illustrator Tim Mulder, a varied batch of sounds feature. Functional heaters sit alongside malfunctioning oddities, united by an ear-tickling capability.
Brixton Soup Kitchen offers critical support to the homeless and in need, and relies heavily on donations to sustain their work, particularly in these trying times. Still supporting the local community while temporarily closed due to the pandemic, they provide relief to many disproportionately affected BAME persons, as well as a homeless population forced back onto the streets since temporary housing provided came to an end.

'Rolling Empires' is the first track off of my next EP 'Explorations In Music For Dancing: Volume 1'. Out on 4th September.

To aid me in my research, I recruited his fellow scientist and collaborator, Caitlin Mcloughlin, who has developed the visual identity for the EP. Frustrated by the restricting formats of a digital download, Caitlin’s visual output extends far beyond the square format cover art. A mock typeface and specimen are both available as a free download with the EP.

Designed by Caitlin, the typeface was first moulded out of plasticine, reflecting the playful nature of the project, whilst the specimen acts as a space to document their process and explore the influences and building blocks for the series.
