This track was originally a demo from 2011, soon after Reznor & Ross made the slide from from the "future dystopia" of Year Zero to the "ongoing dystopia" of The Social Network, and I think the influence that soundtrack had on me at the time shows pretty clearly. I also think it's a good anchor point for the album, straddling the line between droning or hypnotic rhythms and jarring bouts of crushing distortion.  I had a lot of fun refreshing this mix in the studio last year; distorting the piano through an old Moog synth filter and a wash of Afterneath Reverb before being chewed up by this old Rand-O-Matic pedal I recently came across. With the video, I tried to capture that push/pull as the ominous undertones fight for balance against the more hopeful, if warped, piano melodies.

Lately, I have been experimenting with different ways to approach music, drifting a bit away from the grids of step sequencers, and structured, planned out songs in general. Relying rhythmically on the Soma Labs Pulsar 23, and the Make Noise Strega, some of the beats contained here were created using only clock dividers, or envelope modulated arpeggiators, while others are the result of cv-patching feedback loops on the strega or utilizing envelope followers to slam down the pitch of oscillators. Melodies are often played by meandering hands or built up from evolving chords by triggering complementary notes at random intervals. Which is to say these tracks each exist in a very specific moment in time. no sequence to save. no backup. no usb ports were harmed in the creation of this cassette.

EMPTY SET is comprised of the Pulsar23 and DSI Tetra, and utilizes a healthy dose of the Symetrix 606 delay unit
