This song had a rather beautiful origin story.  I had just said goodbye to a long-distance lover who I wasn't going to see again for three months, and these lyrics poured out of me.  I had to dash out the door to catch a ferry to Orcas Island, so I didn't immediately have time to pick out the melody or even the chord progression.  But the song was rattling inside me so insistently that as soon as I made it to my destination, I grabbed a friend's acoustic guitar (Gabriel of the band Wolfchild), plucked out four chords (I actually just used the top four strings and pretended it was a ukulele---because I don't know guitar chords well enough to really play them yet), handed the guitar back to my friend and said, "Can you play G, Bm, C, and Am??  Real slow-like?" He began to strum... I didn't know how I was going to sing the melody yet but I just let the feel of the words sink into me and... It all just came out.  More or less like you'll hear it here.  

A week later I went to another musician friend's house---Joe Bakke---and asked him to play the song with me because I loved it so much I just wanted to sing it again.  Similarly, I told him the chords, gave him the tempo, and then pressed the record button on my phone and we went for it.  I loved the vibe Joe sank into intuitively.  I've got a more official recording of this song in the works, but this particular living room demo---with me chatting to Joe in the middle and everything---will always have a special place in my heart.  The song was so fresh and new, I sang it as if the ideas were just then coming to me... That's something that can only ever be achieved in the first few days after the conception of a song.
