Desmond Mason (artist and former professional athlete): Mason blossomed as a basketball player under the coaching of Eddie Sutton at Oklahoma State University from 1996-2000. It was his time there that helped develop his passion for the arts. During his senior season Desmond was recognized nationally, not only for his basketball talent, but for his artistic ability as well. In 2000, Mason’s basketball career was extended when he was drafted into the NBA by the Seattle Supersonics. He went on to play for several other NBA teams, including the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2004 Desmond founded the Desmond Mason Art Show, in which the proceeds from his artwork are donated to numerous local charities. He has sold over 130 art pieces to collectors all over the world and has used his artistic talents to inspire kids and help his community.

Jesse Tabish (frontman for the band, Other Lives): Tabish is guitarist, pianist & lead vocals for the band, Other Lives. Formed in his hometown of Stillwater, Oklahoma only a few short years ago (in 2004 originally under the name Kunek), Other Lives has already opened for the likes of artists such as The Decemberists, Bon Iver, and Radiohead following the release of their May 2011 album, Tamer Animals. They’ve been on tour in Europe this summer and will begin a fall tour of the US.

The Montréal Dome Café is a friendly and open place where to share and trade know-hows, knowledge, cultures, services and goods. Ha-Loan and Sonia have acknowledged the key role of social bounds in our urban creatures’ crazy life. Therefore, they have decided to emphasize interpersonal dimension as the core of their kaleidoscopic project.

You can come to the Café Dome to relax or study in a calming and warm atmosphere. Everyone has a role to play and is personally welcomed by their hosts. There, you feel like entering a house always open to curious, passionate or more discrete guests. No matter their personality, they are all willing to have a chat and share something with their peers. The Dome Café is constantly evolving just like its participants are.

Whether you come alone or with friends, you can help yourself with coffee or juice coming from Montréal-based small companies. You can also enjoy a home-made pastry made with love, just like Mom’s cakes. Simple and delicious goods to feed your body and your mind.

Eventually, you come to the Dome Café to give and receive when you feel like it. Thanks to their experiences with work, non-profits and life, Ha-Loan and Sonia have realized that every one of us has something to share, to give, to receive or to trade. Nevertheless, we are not always aware of it as our modern western society does not really encourage us to freely trust other people at first sight.

Ha-Loan and Sonia want to give a physical place to a participative community-based network. Its principles will be somehow similar to existing Local Exchange Trading Systems (LETS)  or Gardens of Exchange (GAME). Such systems aim at enabling multilateral goods and services trade between their members.

Some LETS or GAME have hard times to keep their members involved for a long time. For that matter Ha-Loan and Sonia have decided to embody the values of their network in a physical place with an actual storefront. Participants are free to take part in activities and to create new ones of they want. They can accordingly meet people in a welcoming and stimulating public place. Organizing workshops, conferences, discussions and special events (such potlucks, launches, parties, markets, exhibitions) is a way to broaden the relationship between purveyors and receivers.

The Dome is the place where to question our society’s values and lifestyles. Ha-Loan and Sonia believe that members can actively participate in the activities and the running of the network. An involved community means a lively, dynamic and growing community. They also take into account the crucial need for solid organization and efficient communication. For that reason they emphasize on a targeted communication to the appropriate cultural, social and professional networks and to general public.
