What would it sound like to mix reggae, punk, hip hop and 50's rock and roll all into one genre?

VAMPIRE DUWOP is an afro-indigenous art project based in Ontario Canada and we are proud to be releasing our newest single "Rain From The Sky" on all platforms December 1st, 2023.

"Rain From The Sky" was originally recorded in Jamaica in 1967 by Delroy Wilson. Vampire Duwop has selected his classic song as a DJ would and faithfully recreated it in punk rock form at Jukasa Studios.

"In the 90's I was a skateboarder who listened to the Ramones, Misfits, Operation Ivy and the Wu-tang Clan. In the 2000's I produced a hip hop album that won two Canadian national awards including best single of 2003," said Vampire Duwop recording artist Jonathan Garlow. "In 2018 my producing career culminated in a single for Mobb Deep that I recorded before the tragic death of rapper Prodigy."

Not only is their genre a hybrid one but the members of Vampire Duwop are of mixed ancestry themselves and represent Indigenous and African connections. Lead vocalist Garlow got his start in the gospel genre as a child.

"I returned to my roots and started singing gospel music in 2009 after my mother and brother died. They suddenly passed away in the same year. Thereafter I was a funeral singer in my Indigenous community on the Six Nations reserve for ten years," said Garlow. "I'm ready to make my own style of music now."

Vampire Duwop will be releasing another single on December 20th and then a four song EP exclusively on vinyl in 2024.

Find you was written during an online producer event where you had only 24 hours to write, produce and finish a song. Once I made the chords I knew I had to turn this into a Pop song, however I knew I had to add my own flavour to it. This is what gives it the electronic feel. The non-lyric vocal in the drop gives a catchy and nice vibe to the song. I recorded a voice message with the melody when I was on holiday in France.
I knew that it would fit a song someday and well, it fit perfectly!
Once the first drop was done I knew the second drop had to feel different. I gave the second drop a new Futurebass twist with some fresh chord chops.
I had tons of fun creating this song. Especially looking back and realizing it was made in only 24h.
