It's time we took a trip down the aural soundscapes of Mali through the lens of Wind horse's commander-in-chief, Hamza Rahimtula along with legendary Malian musician Bassekou Kouyate (from the band Ngoni Ba). The latest release from the Wind Horse community titled "Bamako Calling" features remixes from Oscar P, Stalvart John & Farhan Rahman, Jose Marquez, and Unnayanaa to make for one of the year's most powerful releases.

The EP begins with the track 'Ben Kadi', an original from Hamza Rahimtula and Bassekou that's a proper afro-house dance floor burner. The track opens with simple percussive elements that accompany a chunky kick-drum that sets the groove right at the offset. As the track builds gradually, melodic riffs of stringed instruments coupled with piano stabs and vocals layer over the rhythms with ease. Bassekou on strings steals the limelight with explicitly exciting strums that power through the track. It wouldn't be surprising if you heard this being dropped at a club near you, who could argue?

"Sounds beyond borders" has been conceptualized by the founder of our label - Hamza Rahimtula along with his close friend, label staple and extremely talented percussionist/prodcuer Manu Idhra and film-maker Marco Oliviera. The aim of the concept pivoted toward throwing the spotlight on local ethnicities, their approach and their influence on music. The project hopes to achieve this mainly via a two-pronged approach consisting of an album inspired by local sonics, supported by a video documentary centered around the same ethos. For their first assignment, they chose India to serve as their bastion of inspiration for which the album will be based on.

The debut album for this category begins with a track called "Darwaza", which roughly translates to door in Hindi. The track stays true to its nomenclature by inviting the listener into its presence with a mystical and alluring pad intertwined with eclectic strums of the sitar. This is accompanied by gorgeous, crooning vocals of Sunanda Sharma that are signature to Hamza's love for ethereal influences.

The second track "Sonar Quilla" is crafted to dish out a dance-floor friendly vibe while also keeping up with the inspirations of its predecessor. A playful baseline layered with minimal yet effective percussions, drive you through different Indian landscapes through intelligent soundscapes. Two tracks in and this might get you already pressing the "Play on loop" button!

The third track "Thar Calling" continues to drive the album towards its inevitable crescendo by melding Rajasthani influences and moods with a truly Detroit-esque deep house track that's sure to find a spot in many record collections and playlists. A phat bassline greets you, followed by irresistibly tight percussions that would probably work any dance floor. Samples of children's voice along with spaced-out vocals add a hazy aura to any already impressive tune.

 "Santur Love", a composition that is defined by incredible samples from the Sitar, interspersed by a chorus of ambient pads that give-way to a deceptive groove that can turn things up a notch at any club or festival. The track can best be described as a tale of two-halves that almost mirrors India's diverse and multi-cultural landscapes, with one half meant for throwing shapes and moves and the other meant to set your imaginations, aflutter.

Manu's percussive and rhythmic sensibilities come to the forefront as the track meanders zealously through lush audio-environs, accompanied by spiritual vocals that are part of the Indian musical fabric. The lead for the track is incredibly sculpted and pulls the listener into an electronic paradise with consummate ease. The albums sixth offering, "

Chakra Drum " is another one that's sure to be heard at the closest neighborhood club, because of how well it fills up space in front of a DJ. The track is smattered with organic and addictive rhythms that converge together with beautifully construed atmospheres for a spell-binding tune.

" Odissi Tech" follows up with a delicious tech-house heater that's layered an accompanied with heavenly pads (something that's expected by now) and a juicy bassline. Hamza and Manu rarely disappoint and this tune is no different, primed and ready to awe-inspire whichever crowd is on it's receiving end.

"Banyan", is an amazingly well-concocted depiction of desi-electronic influences with a rubber-band bassline, prominent and catchy tabla samples with playful keys that lend the track a naturally ecstatic mood. Crafted to encapsulate the soul of one of India's holiest trees, this rendition is going to surely have a lot of takers.

" Mahayana" is the last track that rounds off an extremely well-designed album for Manu and Hamza with an alchemy of ambiance, saw-tooth spunk and uplifting sonic that accurately sum up "Sounds beyond borders". The track also signals the culmination of a journey across India's cultural and musical totems that have been mirrored in an extremely well-curated electronic music album.

Hailing from New Delhi, Hamza has attained a reputation as a pioneer of the house scene in India and one of the more innovative and exciting producers today. Hamza’s diverse international sound is influenced from his strong musical background as well as growing up in India and traveling the world, living in Paris, Boston, and New York. Early in his journey, exposure to renowned house DJs such as Terry Francis, Dave Mothersole, DJ Heather, and Danny Tenaglia inspired Hamza to create his own electronic dance productions. Soon he found a unique style of house music combining deep, tribal, and funky sounds with strong world music influences.
Hamza set up his own label Wind Horse Records to further nourish this growing production repertoire. While in New York, Hamza did his Masters in Music Business at New York University, which gave him a very strong foundation and insight into how to creatively promote his own music. Wind Horse Records, the first Indian house music label, is a major part of that vision. From its first release Wind Horse quickly earned the notice and accolades of many notable fans including Dubfire (Deep Dish), Peter Kruder (Kruder & Dorfmeister), Richie Hawtin, Quentin Harris, and Tom Findlay (Groove Armada). 

Hamza is also a top notch DJ, bringing his fresh sound to dance floors from New York to Portugal, Boston to Hyderabad, Paris to Pune. His sets typically start with his signature deep house sound, heavily influenced by Latin / Afro / world flavors, before developing into powerful tribal and deep, tech-house influenced beats perfect for the peak time. Hamza’s unmistakable style, combined with many of his own productions, create memorable DJ sets that turn clubbers into instant fans and followers. Also, this combination of potent DJ sets and a renowned production style has gathered the interest of prominent labels outside of Wind Horse, and Hamza’s releases have found homes on the likes of Kompakt, King Street Sounds, Nitegrooves, and Monique Speciale.

As for Wind Horse Records, Hamza’s vision is unstoppable as the label continues to grow and spread the sound and philosophy of India’s house music scene worldwide. The label has been sponsoring events, such as its popular Sunday Sundowner Sessions series in Delhi, which has become the main deep house outlet in the city. Wind Horse plans to take these Sessions elsewhere, exposing the rest of India to the label’s deep house sound. Also, after five years, Wind Horse recognizes its accumulated family of top notch Indian DJ talent by launching the Wind Horse Agency. The agency will showcase the best deep house, nu-disco, tech-house, and world beat DJs in the country, exposing them on a pan-Indian level and then building audiences globally. As always, Wind Horse remains ambitious but with a tight sense of community, a combination that cultivates its unique, rich flavor.

Hamza has established himself as one to keep a close eye on in the house music scene, and looks to never slow down. With his impressive list of past and upcoming projects as well as fiery worldwide DJ performances Hamza is quickly becoming an important and influential talent in his own right.
