The Lowdown
Phil Weeks and Robsoul Recordings kick off their 15th year in house music with a new three track EP from the main man himself.  Live At Palladium has been the standout track of Phil’s sets over the last few months, always generating a queue of people asking what it is.  You may just recognize the Marvin Gaye sample, which was also previously “borrowed” by Moodymann.  It comes backed with the funk-infused You Want My Love and the soaring, chugging groove of Demain A Jamais, and looks set to get another year off to a flying start for one of the finest labels in underground house music.

Futureboogie Recordings keep up the heat with three jams built for the good times, courtesy of Cassio Kohl.  The Nottingham based producer steps up to the plate with his debut release for the label, delivering a trio of finely crafted house tunes for the discerning ear.  

‘Let It Be Me’ opens the EP, heading straight into uncomplicated and organic deep house territory.  Nifty 909 drum patterns and melodic keys and chords deeper than a wizard’s sleeve, the influence of the greats like Larry Heard can be heard in Cassio’s production here.  Wistful Moog refrains and gentle pads float along the old school beat as Cassio drops a real killer vibe here.

This sophisticated style is upheld on ‘Hear Me’. Built around an infectious bassline and disco drums, the deep flavours remain centre stage to Cassio’s music as loungin’ chords and vocal refrains and skats blend with staccato guitars and luscious strings on this superb live sounding jazzy cut.

‘Come Together’ closes the EP, the swinging drums and hypnotizing bass harks back to the original deep garage house sound, as chopped up vocals in a hip housin’ style and heaps of emotive melody are layered on top, reminiscent of the sterling productions of Ron Allen in the 1990s (for the uninitiated, go check!).

A highly accomplished debut release for Futureboogie here, and one that demands the attention of Cassio Kohl as ‘one to watch; over the coming months…

Belgian producer ColorJaxx returns to Large Music for his second release. Once again, he showcases a flair for creating organic, analog–driven tracks and his work continues to remind me of the early 90's grooves that were prominent on early Chicago labels. The title track is my favorite here but I love all three–I hope you enjoy them just as much.
