Audacious little intrigues in curtained booths.
Porkpie hats easing through the back door.
Hat-check girl with eyes of midnite.
Leather and lead sap in my left pocket,
Artillery in the right.

Slapstick thugs from a bad movie, 
staring at me.
I try hard to look human.
The plot persists in thickening.

Serenity, peace and contentment 
were for suckers;
I opened the door marked Keep Out.
The room spun once and began to fade.

Nearer my God to thee flashed in neon.
Everything went black…

After all is said and done
After the sins are confessed
When eternity’s road beckons
And we step up to take that final test.
It’s after a lifetime has come and gone
And the wins and losses are all totalled,
It’s after the tears and the laughter
It’s after all the stories are told.

It’s then that I’ll remember your smile
It’s then that my heart will cry out
It’s then that the spark will turn to ember
It’s then that there’ll be no doubt.

The road all alone takes forever
The path is muddy and rough
The years move slowly down the page
The heart wants to shout out enough!
The memories are buried so deep
Like a book read once and discarded
The blood, sweat and tears of our romance
Left me broken and empty hearted.

He sees them kissing in the park
He sees them driving through the dark
Memories so strong he can taste her
But then he hears the refrain

Walking in Shadows
I've been walking in the shadows so long
My eyes have completely adjusted.
I see things in the dark that are
long past wanted, tossed away and rusted.

One of the things God gave us
was an indeterminate amount of time.
Did we have too little, did we have too much
It all depends on the paths we've walked
And the songs we've found that rhymed

The sunny days and the restless nights
Are never up to us
Those events are left to chance
Like fairy tales and dust.

Did the angels come to sing you a song
Did the demons come out to play
Were you the winner of the battle
Or were you the one that was slain?

We struggle and strain, we run through the rain
All for a piece of the pie
When all we ever really wanted
Was someone to see through our eyes.

The path to my future was going so well
Until it went through the path of my past
The friends and memories grow hazy
As if they don't want to last.

Decisions are made and some choices are wrong
But some never make it that far
Sometimes it's fate and the Gods do the choosing
And they're the ones that tear at the heart.

There's a certain sound a heart makes
When it starts to break apart
Some say it happens little by little
Some say it's there from the start

The Indians take their fables
and make them into a special tea
It takes their eyes inside themselves
But it blinds them when they see.

The only thing I wanted to learn
Was to enjoy the passing of time.
It turns out while it was passing
I was learning to lose my mind

They stood in a circle around a fire
Jumping in and out of the sparks
The leader was a large man
Painted and very dark
He called me by my rightful name
and ordered me into the arc
The magic words were spoken
Then everything went dark

But it's quiet at the start
Like a freight train moving slowly
Building speed along the way
You find yourself alone again
With nothing left to say

When a soul and body go separate ways

Is it unbridled passion or desire for heaven
or just the enchantment of the moon?
I probably shouldn't still even be here
Maybe it's all just a dream
I spent my life creating smoke and mirrors
chasing illusions and learning to scream.

The rivers and creeks they haunt me
They cover me with a mother's love
They start ther lives deep under the ground
But like some of us they rise above.
I've given up on giving up
Lord, I just couldn't take the pace
When you're in a pack heading downhill
You don't want to be the one to lead the race

Every road has some sadness you can't get around
Every life will have it's share of pain
There will always be days that are tragic
Nights you'll be surprised by the magic
But get those blessed feet moving and
Find a way to dance thru the rain

The carpenter came and fixed this house
The walls are strong and able
The rooms are almost finished now
An empty chair still waits at the table.
The anger and the sadness still come and go
But I spend the day banging the drum

Not what they will become.
