I’ve been meaning to make this mix for a really long time and whilst I know it won’t be to everybody’s taste, I wanted to showcase some of my favourites tracks from when I first began DJ’ing way back in 2002! I wanted to be able to show people where my love for music started and where for me, it all began.

You may or may not know that when I first started buying vinyl’s and learning to DJ I fell in love with Speed Garage, Bassline House, Funky House and UK Garage - a music genre/scene that dominated Birmingham (my hometown) at the time. 

I started out with some not-so-tight Numark belt drive decks and slowly began teaching myself the art of DJ’ing. When I say slowly, I mean slowly... For a short time I wasn’t even aware that I had to adjust tempo’s to mix a track and it’s safe to say my first couple of weeks practising didn’t sound too great! Fast forward twelve or so years, I’m now living my dream as a DJ! 

I had SO much fun making this mix. It was both an amazing trip down memory lane and a pleasant surprise to realise that I sometimes drop a few tracks in my set now that I played allllllll those years ago! 

I have absolutely no idea if this type of music was being played in your city/scene, wherever that may be around the world, however it’d be interesting to know... What I do know is that these Speed Garage / Bassline vibes were massive in the likes of Birmingham (UK) and Sheffield (UK) in the early 2000’s - if you were a part of the scene back in the day, you need no introduction! 

This two-hour mix consists of 31 tracks that range in release year from 1996 to 2005. These 120 minutes are my ROOTS...

I’ve been meaning to make Roots 2 for a longggggg time but as these mp3's are from multiple old hard drives and often vinyl rips these trip down memory lane mixes literally take me hours and hours (and hours!) to make and whilst they're so special to me and very much worth making, finding the time isn't easy. Roots 1 was uploaded in June 2014, two years ago to the month which is kinda mad! 

I started the ROOTS mixtape series because I wanted to showcase some of my favourites tracks from when I first began DJ’ing way back in 2002! I wanted to be able to show people where my love for music started and where for me, it all began.

WHO REMEMBERS BACK IN THE DAY !!!

So I did it !!  I finally got round to making a mix of all those amazing tunes what rocked the Birmingham dance floors for the past 20+ years !!! 

I think I speak for us all we have so many amazing memories , we met so many amazing people on those dance floors where we raved as a family to a certain style of music . You may of been the original 90s ravers, you may of like me started going out just after in yearly 2000s  , you may of came along after but there’s one thing that brings us all together and that’s the music !!! 

I started my journey as a DJ many moons ago and this was the music our scene was all about still to this day these tunes hold many fond memories and I hope I can take you all on a trip down memory lane and relive some of those messy times !!! Anthems , Classics , guilty pleasures !!! 

‘Bring it Back’ is a series of mixtapes im gonna be releasing aimed at these Retro House & Birmingham classics . I’ve got some of my favourite DJs lined up and IF we can’t go out and party any more let’s bring the party to YOU :-)

For those that dont know Speed Garage is essentially a combination of the US Garage sound mixed with Jungle influences from the UK, using a 4x4 beat with dub sound effects and a heavy bassline. These tunes still sound fresh today and its influences are still felt today within the UK Garage, House and Dubstep scene.
