Chilean-born Francisco Allendes returns to Crosstown Rebels for the first time in six years this May. Serving up the three-track What You Do, the title number has already received global airplay via Damian Lazarus himself. Now, the full release will be made available next month and includes a remix by US-legend Harry Romero.

“What You Do is one of those tracks that happens magically on a jam and you can't really make it much better after that. I wrote it during the pandemic, so I wanted to create a weapon for when clubs would open again. Maratone came about the day after I played b2b with Matthias Tanzmann for thirteen hours, at the birthday of a friend in Ibiza. I sent both tracks to Damian and didn’t hear back from him for a few months... then I woke up to his WhatsApp message. It was a video of him playing What You Do at Space Miami and people climbing the walls of the club!” - Francisco Allendes.

A contemporary dose of four-on-the-floor house, What You Do leaves few prisoners in its wake, as rampant drum patterns converge on a heady combination of kicks, synths and irresistible vocals right the way through. There’s an infectious energy to the track, paving the way for Harry Romero’s similarly up-tempo remix. It’s feel-good, club ready dance music at its best, packed full of low-slung groove that opens neatly into the closing sequence: Maratone, a stripped-back, techy cut that bears all the hallmarks of a true Ibiza anthem.

Hailing from Chile and now based in Ibiza, Francisco Allendes is a leading light in today’s scene. Be it Loco Dice’s Desolat, Steve Lawler’s VIVA or Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels, his productions have graced some of the industry’s most well-respected labels. Such quality hasn’t gone unnoticed - he picked up the ‘Best Ibiza’ DJ Award in September 2019 and has gone on to complete several South American tours. A much loved affiliate of ANTS, Francisco has a long standing residency at both Ushuaïa in Ibiza and their affiliated tours, in addition to hosting the weekly radio show.

Seminal American house talent Harry Romero is a well-established figure on the worldwide music circuit. A prominent global DJ and producer since the ‘90s, early productions on Cutting Records and Cutting Traxx helped set the tone for Harry’s career trajectory, opening the doors to a coveted BBC Radio 1 ‘Essential Mix’ in recent years.

Following on from Guido Schneider’s enigmatic ‘Fo-
cus On’ Album last year, Poker Flat are especially
proud to introduce the next in the series, in the scin-
tillating form of Focus On: Argy.
Comprising partly of new and exclusive produc-
tions by Argy with a strong handful of well known
and up-coming names, and highlights from his back-
catalogue of releases and remixes, the mix acts as
a showcase for Argy’s unique style, taking influence
from strong, energetic peak time house through to
deep and spaced out percussive journeys. Hot col-
laborations with Solomun, The Mole, Maral Salmassi,
Dj Gregory, Jerome Sydenham and Bayoga all open
up various mindsets, various avenues of Argy’s musi-
cal passions, as we traverse through an impeccable
selection of modern house music.
Not wishing to conform to the rules of a mainstream
house Dj-compilation, Argy takes a bold and clear
stance when it comes to the structure of the mix.
The first three tracks start things running strong, as
if you’ve just arrived in the middle of a peak-time set,
with the phasing chord stabs from Argy’s Remix of
Jerome Sydenham’s Ebian melting into the powerful
bass of ‘The Storm’. It’s a soaring, urgent introduc-
tion that’s wonderfully unconventional and captures
the complete spirit of Argy’s idealology. These tracks
were designed for the dancefloor, and it spells out
the intentions of the mix with style and honesty. From
there on things become more cerebral, with Argy’s
debut hit on Poker Flat, ‘Love Dose’, introducing a
passage where time is frozen and the party begins to
unfold at its own heady pace. From there on we are
simply left in the delightful and submissive position of
the Listener, as the introduction also serves as a con-
tract between Argy and his audience. We are now
completely under his spell... locked in and Focused
On. Each track is clearly introduced with a defined
mixing style, announcing each new moment to the
audience and making a spectacle of the variety and
depth of music on offer.
‘I would never dare to approach an album without
a concept,’ Argy divulges, and its clear from listen-
ing to both the exclusive vinyl tracks, and the hour
long mix, that he means what he says. Each brand
new and exclusive track featured on the vinyl release
is a fresh collaboration between Argy and another
producer or musician, and the concept dictates that
both must have an active part in the recording of the
track. Argy wanted to try something new, something
very rare, which is to group together collaborations
with various other artists in the form of an album,
and is a highly-focused album at that, exploring as
any different dancefloor possibilities as are possible
within his sound.
Traversing the spectrum from the intense travelling
grooves of ‘Anenome’, with Solomun, a track that
is perhaps the most energetic trip on show here, to
the evolving percussive workout of ‘Under No Illu-
sion’, with percussionist Bayoga, there are endless

Premiere: Whitesquare - Folded Reality [2020 Vision Recordings]

igh Tide Recordings launches with a rhythmic two­-track house release from Southampton’s Sleeperhold featuring a remix from 8bit and Lower East producer Junior Gee.

Real name Dan Reid, Sleeperhold is an established figure in the house music scene. As one of the minds behind the renowned High Tide boat parties, Reid has long been a purveyor of house music in the UK’s South Coast and has repeatedly shared the booth with acts such as Carl Cox, Seth Troxler, Sasha and Digweed. As a producer Reid’s been making regular appearances on Mark Knight’s Toolroom Records, however he’s now turned his attention to running a label alongside Gary Bennetton, Steve Knight and Matt Conrad, with forthcoming releases planned from Bennetton not to mention under their collaborative High Tides pseudonym.

Featured on Carl Cox’s 27 CD with additional support from James Zabiela and Alan Fitzpatrick, ‘Out Ya Face’ meanders forward with shuffling percussion and stabbing synths as subtle notes and a distorted spoken word sample resonate on top. British producer Junior Gee’s remix then demonstrates a little less thud, stripping the production back whilst focusing on dusky atmospherics. Tying things together, ‘Vibe Hunter’ introduces crunchy snares, echoing effects and an infectious hook that continually evolves throughout.
