This tune is from the second album release by the Fretless Brothers, whose debut CD, ‘Footsteps’, was the first jazz recording done in Harmonic Series tuning. Since it’s beginning, jazz has been based on the same 12 notes per octave used in conventional tuning, with the addition of occasional ‘blue notes’ for added expressivity. The Fretless Brothers have expanded the pitch palette to allow access to an infinite array of notes which fall between the cracks of the standard pitches, for the first time allowing these pitches to be used Harmonically as well as melodically. 

Jazz has always been based on chord changes, while the Harmonic Series is based on a single fundamental pitch, so the two systems have always been considered separate and distinct. Fretless Brothers’ guitarist/composer Jon Catler has designed a fretting system for guitar that combines the two systems for the first time. Called ’12-Tone Ultra Plus’, it keeps the standard 12 frets in place, and adds 12 new frets which give purely tuned pitches from the Harmonic Series, resulting in a guitar with 36 different pitches per octave, three times as many as on a standard piano. This gives access to new chords and melodies based on Nature’s tuning system, the Harmonic Series, while preserving the modulation possibilities available in standard tuning. The result is a type of moveable ‘Just Intonation’ that rewrites the possibilities of the language of jazz.

This is well demonstrated on the new live CD, where the expanded consonance and dissonance give the Fretless Brothers a melodic and Harmonic language that is truly new and unique. At times, such as on tracks like ’Speed Of Life’ and ‘Footsteps’, the chords fly by at high speeds, providing extremely challenging changes for the soloists. Other times, such as on ’Grace’ and the epic “Aqua Luna’, the chords hover in the air like Harmonic Clouds, a technique Catler learned from his many years working with the great composer La Monte Young. 

When something truly new in music arrives, there can be a tendency to offhandedly dismiss it. Some of John Coltrane’s innovations were called ‘anti-jazz’ at the time, and Thelonious Monk’s early work was not always appreciated. But the minor second intervals in Monk's piano playing, as well as the screaming multi-phonics of late period Coltrane, can indeed be looked at as their attempts to cross the pitch spectrum. The Fretless Brothers have learned from these masters, and have added something original to the mix, perhaps pointing a way to the future of jazz.

International touring soon secured Hansford a place among the world's leading bass players and work with Mike Oldfield, Allan Holdsworth, John Martyn, Bireli Lagrene, La Monte Young, David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, Gary Husband, David Torn, Jon Catler etc. Hansford plays Warwick bass guitars and amplifiers and has worked closely with them on the development of the first Just Intonation bass. He also endorses DR Strings, Lehle pedals, MXR pedals, Peterson tuners and Sommer cables. He is a founding member of the band Gongzilla.  His latest project is a jazz power trio called HRIII.
