The track begins with a drawling newsreel (Fakenews, real news, naturally bad news) predicting a terrifying event. A spotlight is shone upon governments' tendency to KEEP THINGS FROM US as breaks and bass tease into the drop.

From that point on-wards, an homage to old-skool Neurofunk slappers and FM brass knuckles proceeds to expressly liquidize your gurning jaw with some serious sound fire. The track keeps a strong and stable core while chopping and changing the groove throughout to keep you dancing through your chosen apocalypse.

Opening with the eerie spookiness of a crypt, the dark, synth chord progressions lead a path to glassy hats and skeletal shuffling breaks before dropping into unrestrained, bouncing, ratcheting bass fluctuations. Spiralling distorted synth hits and a viciously snappy, spatially dimensioned drum pattern takes you through a porthole to the darkest back channels of DNB.

The title "Opening EP" is only logical as this debute release is connected to the festival itself. Acommpanied by two Rido's scenic tracks the music masterminds Rido & Counterstrike have prepared the title track "Let It Roll" for the opening show of Let It Roll Open Air 2015 and raised a hype and hunger for the tune to be heard and released. One thing about independent record labels is that their scope for picking up talent which doesn’t conform to the mainstream is second to none. And a label which has held this skill from the beginning is Kosen Production, the Toulouse based imprint which prides itself on bringing forward the best of drum & bass from its furthest corners. After already giving a platform to the likes of Signs, The Clamps and Nickbee, to name a few high-ranking producers who’ve released on the label, they’re still making their impact felt throughout the genre with a brand new EP from key players within the wider global market. Puerto Rican based Custom Soldierz jump on board alongside Italian production maestro Akrom for a double-sided output which begins the New Year for Kosen in an explosive fashion. The throttle has been pushed to the floor and as a result, a collection of artists are about to reinstate Kosen’s reputation, providing yet more must-have cuts for music lovers.

The ‘Empathy EP’ drops you straight into the production styles of both Custom Soldierz and Akrom, who dominate with their slick, carefully fashioned musical offerings whilst epitomising the standard held by Kosen’s back catalogue. First track ‘Empathy’ draws out on stepped out percussion, a meandering bassline and a beginning which leaves a foreboding taste on the synapses. Bit by bit you’re pulled into the mix, before you’re able to fully see the intricacies of the collaboration and how it came together so easily. It’s a title-track which packs a punch, leaving you waiting for more as the record finally wraps up.

And finally comes ‘Shifter’, which ducks and dives between slews of synth and padded bass notes. You’re drawn into an almighty breakdown, taking its time before you’re then shot down a chasm of flipping beats and punching drums. The track’s well-chiselled hook instantly grabs you, sweeping its way between every segment. This is Custom Soldierz and Akrom at their most versatile, helping to develop the sound of Kosen alongside their own. It’s looking to be another monumental year for Kosen and on first listen to this EP, they clearly feel the same way.

Two solitary figures circled each other, combatants in an arena borne of their own destructive power. One sat upon the back of an eldritch beast, a terrifying mass of tooth and claw formed of horrendous ritual. It lumbered menacingly, providing a platform for the diminutive sor whom sat atop it. The sorceress’ dainty wings fluttered in anticipation as she watched her challenger, flecking droplets of blood shed in the engagement from their surface with every half beat. By contrast the challenger strode simply upon his own two feet, dwarfed by the size of the beast which faced him with the sorceress upon its back. As he tread his path he observed its every movement with each of his senses, watching, waiting, and anticipating what would come next in equal measure. The air hung still around the duelists, all sound awaiting the next step of their feet with bated breath.

In a moment the beast lunged forwards with a roar, its gaping maw outstretched towards the challenger. The beasts neck extended like that of a serpent, another impossibility created of the magic which coursed through its veins. Forewarned by his vigilant watch, the challenger leapt to the air before the beast’s maw, SEIZING THE MOMENT as he planted a single foot firmly on its nose. Enraged, the beast thrashed at its would be prey, launching the challenger further upwards & backwards. With practiced grace, the challenger took hold of this momentum, holding forth his blade as he arced towards the sorceress upon the beast’s back. With a flourish, the challenger pierced the malevolent heart of the sorceress mere moments after his initial leap, landing back upon the ground below obscured by a cloud of dust. Behind him, the beast shrieked in an increasingly high pitched wail, cut off from the source of eldritch might which had driven it. It shrunk rapidly as its cry grew higher and higher, returning to its original state as a field mouse before quickly scurrying away.

TOBAX returns to EATBRAIN with his first full release in the SEIZED MOMENT EP, bringing his frenetic and fast paced sound to the label with four furious DNB tracks. The titular SEIZED MOMENT features the vocals of HELO alongside a stabbing staccato bassline that is relentless in its out of the gate audio assault. BURNING quickly whips the embers of its opening into an inferno, as the singed edges of its bassline roar with pained power atop a pounding drumbeat. KAPPA’s mysterious introductory synth line bounces atop a breakbeat before dropping into a deeply aggressive metallic rhythm driven by a pulsating two step pattern, whilst INVISIBLE SPIRIT, the EP’s collaboration with BAD DISTRICT, combines its ominous atmosphere with a rushing arpeggiated bass for a crazed & spirited dash to the EP’s finish. With the SEIZED MOMENT EP, TOBAX truly makes the most of his moment, pushing his overwhelmingly aggressive sound to its limits on EATBRAIN.
