London-based synth-pop artist Alice Hubble has shared her comment on the #metoo movement in the form of new single ‘Power Play’ alongside news that her new album will be released later this year. Described as the work of ‘one lady at home with her enormous collection of synthesisers’, Alice Hubble mixes melancholic pop, layered vintage synths and elegant vocals, reminiscent of Ladytron, Ashra and Goldfrapp. Her debut album 'Polarlichter', inspired by the 70’s recordings of Tangerine Dream and Sally Oldfield was released in September 2019 to much critical acclaim. Earning the project support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq and Gideon Coe as well as acts like Damo Suzuki, Advance Base, Pram and Beak> with whom she played live.

Where ‘Polarlichter’ offered a soundscape of pastoral solace, new single ‘Powerplay’ is a much more direct offering. Written in March 2020, Alice found herself channeling a lot of anger into the single. “The track is my comment on what happens in a post #metoo world, once the worst offenders have been ‘cancelled’ and caught and the news stories have been had. Has something changed?  Does society move on and go to the next issue?” explains Alice. The song references the mass hex of Brock Turner, when witches around the world joined together to hex the Stanford swimmer convicted of sexual assault. “I am fascinated by this form of collective digital activism,” she says. “In honouring this, Power Play is the closest thing I’ve written to a protest song”. 

‘Power Play’ is out on 19th May on Happy Robots and is available to download and stream via all digital platforms, with a new album to follow this Autumn. To celebrate the launch of her new single, Alice will be performing at the Strongroom Bar in London on May 23rd, tickets are on sale now.

Rodney Cromwell’s evocative electronic indietronica looks to the early experimental-electronica of the 70’s and 80’s to construct a soundtrack for the post-truth world. Where the debut album ‘Age of Anxiety’ drew on personal demons, on the 2018 EP 'Rodney's English Disco,' social and political tribulations inspire his wry songs of woe.

Recorded in Catford (UK) and mixed at ACME Hall Studios, New York with his producer Rich Bennett, the next Rodney Cromwell album 'Memory Box' is completed ready for release in 2022. The album is a mix of synthpop, hauntological excursions, dreampop and European coldwave.  Sonically it sits somewhere between Kraftwerk, The Cure, Stereolab and contemporary cult acts such as Black Marble and Advisory Circle. Its sound is both reassuringly familiar and completely distinctive.

Since the release of 'Age of Anxiety' in 2015, Rodney Cromwell has been featured by the likes of NME, Electronic Sound Magazine, Huffington Post, Paste, BBC6 Music and national RNE3 in Spain for whom he recorded a live session. He was named 'Most Promising New Act' by The Electricity Club, 'Barry was an arms dealer' featured in the 2015 Official Festive 50 and 'Age of Anxiety' was in the Electronic Sound Albums of the Year. He has appeared on compilations alongside Cavern of Anti-matter, John Foxx, Devo, OMD, Katy Perry and many more. 

The live set incorporates analogue synths, video visuals and live instrumentation along with Rodney’s ‘offbeat wit’. His debut festival appearance at Indietracks in 2015 was described as 'like a spiritual experience". Indietronica artist Rodney Cromwell from Catford releases his new single ‘Opus Three’ via Happy Robots on 3rd February. It’s a floor-filling synth-driven dance number about disconnected lovers trying to conjure optimism as the world stands the brink of apocalypse.

Conceived as a love-letter to a lost synthesizer, ‘Opus Three’ is at it’s heart the simplest of dance numbers; a full-fat 120bpm beat, layered with a chunky Moog Opus 3 synth line, is overlaid with percussion and the primitive buzzing tones of a 1960’s pocket stylophone. Inspired by the haunting and surreal novel ‘Ice’ by Anna Kavan, the song is about two lovers on the brink of apocalypse, separated by distance, lost in time, trying to find positivity in a world where there is little. “Don’t let it be, catastrophe” repeats the chorus, trying to conjure optimism from somewhere.

The B-side ‘Perception Management’ is an atmospheric dystopian synth instrumental that might be described as as ‘post-truth pop’. The maxi single includes an extended dance mix produced by Rich Bennett with remixes from Dublin synthpop artist Circuit 3 and Happy Robots’ latest signing folktronica act, Field Glass.

‘Opus Three’ is taken from the forthcoming ‘Memory Box' album. The LP is a mixture of synthpop, hauntology, dreampop and European coldwave and releases on 18th March.  Using analogue synths, drum machines with minimal computer sequencing the LP conjures an organic, dream-like world, inspired as much by Alice in Wonderland and Franz Kafka as by its sonic influences such as Kraftwerk, The Cure, Polyrock and Stereolab, creating a distinctive and compelling world.

Alice Hubble has announced her new album Hexentanzplatz will be released on September 10th, 2021 via London-based electronic-pop label Happy Robots. Described as the work of ‘one lady at home with her enormous collection of synthesisers’, Alice Hubble mixes melancholic pop, layered vintage synths and elegant vocals, reminiscent of Ladytron, Jane Weaver and Goldfrapp. Her debut album Polarlichter was released in September 2019 to much critical acclaim. 

Lead single ‘My Dear Friend’ was inspired by the discovery of a collection of love letters written by Hubble’s mother to her father around the time that they first met. “My mother passed away when I was in my teens and these letters gave me a real insight into who she was as a person, her ‘newly in love’ giddiness jumping off the page,” she says. 

Her new album Hexentanzplatz, named after the German mountain steeped in magic and legend, translates literally to mean Witches’ Dance Floor. An apt title for an album that dances its way through themes of illusion, love, feminism and protest whilst maintaining glistening, 80’s synth-pop sensibilities. Whilst Hubble was driving around the Harz Mountains last summer, the song ‘Beautiful Madness’ by Michael Patrick Kelly was on regular radio rotation. She repeatedly misheard the lyrics, thinking Kelly was singing “Oh what a beautiful mountain”, a sentiment which had much more resonance given their surroundings. The misheard line made Hubble smile and became the basis of her new record’s title track. “Being an eternal optimist I felt the need to write something in 2020 that was full of hope and positivity,” she says. 

Hexentanzplatz will be available on vinyl, CD and digital on September 10th via Happy Robots and Alice Hubble is set to take her immersive live show on the road this Autumn.

Mood Taeg (pronounced Mood Tag) is a three-piece Scottish/German musical project split between Düsseldorf and Shanghai. The band name, a term in functional linguistics, is a reference to their day jobs, while the album title Anaphora, meaning reference to that which preceded, or came before, is a further nod to linguistics, and their own musical evolution.

Mood Taeg have been described as Neo-Krautrock, combining a contemporary take on the lange gerade drumming style of Klaus Dinger and Jaki Liebezeit with the melodic sensibilities and tones of Michael Rother and Kraftwerk. However, outside of their Krautrock roots, they also cite John Carpenter, Philip Glass, Mastermind Herbie, The Beach Boys, Isao Tomita, LFO, Roy Ayers, Ennio Morricone, and Airto Moreira as musical influences. Production-wise, they look to the work of Conny Plank, Greg Wilson, and Brian Eno for inspiration.

The band self-produce all of their music back and forth between their Shanghai and Düsseldorf studios and are part of the wider Mood Taeg Kollektiv which includes musicians, graffiti artists, DJs, photographers, painters, and video artists. They also maintain their Scottish connection through collaborations with artists such as Dundee poet Andrew French.
 
On this new album, Mood Taeg have built on their well-received debut, Exophora. And while some motorik elements remain, patterns generally eschew repetition and evolve organically within tracks. Emphasis has also moved on from the subtle vocal textures found on Exophora, to stronger, more prominent vocal elements featuring poets (Christopher Logue), cultural critics (Michael Parenti), film makers (Alan P. Chilchier), and trade union activists (Jimmy Reid), who reflect their political, social, and cultural views.

The debut album 'Exophora' received acclaim from the likes of Prog, Electronic Sound Magazine, The Dorf, Last Day Deaf, The Electricity Club, Freq Joyzine and more with radio play on BBC Scotland and BBC 6 Music.

For ‘Anaphora Versions’, Mood Taeg have combined their own re-imaginings of album tracks with those by musicians from tdk and Lowell’s hometown of Dundee and K’ko’s hometown of Düsseldorf. In doing so, they continue their approach of being part of a wider collective of artists rather than just a 3-piece band, an approach which allows for fascinating new takes on their music.

 

Album opener, ‘Happiness Fragment’ sees tdk and K’ko take a poppier path with their DanKe version. Following that, scratch DJ and Scottish graffiti artist Vera turns ‘Konkord’ into a beat heavy study of  head-nodding bliss, whilst Lowell Freeman transposes ‘Pilomotor Reflex’ from its motorik roots to nostalgic electronica. ‘Ohrwurm’ sees the Düsseldorf artist Liefergasse add a Germanic twist, followed by Jan the Man and his dystopian public service announcement version of ‘Diskonkordanz’. For the Electric Boogaloo version of ‘Pilomotor Reflex’, Lowell dusts off his Roland TR-808 and revisits his Street Sounds Electro roots for inspiration. The Alien Cormorant delivers a rockier take on ‘Diskonkordanz’ that finishes with a flourish reminiscent of Sonic Youth’s Teenage Riot. The album closer is the radio version of Squirrels Dancing Among Elephants.

 

In addition to the 9 listed tracks, the CD version features two exclusive hidden tracks, the Shanghai radio mixes of ‘Happiness Fragment’ and ‘Pilomotor Reflex’. The album cover features work by Düsseldorf photographer and ‘Kollektiv’ member Faible.

The recent album by Roman Angelos "Music for Underwater Supermarkets" released in 2022 by Happy Robots, paints a sonic dreamscape where the mundane act of grocery shopping meets the future. “Music for Underwater Supermarkets” continues and extends Roman's obsession with library and soundtrack music of the past, fusing that aesthetic with childhood memories of being pushed around in shopping carts and visiting strip malls. Vibraphones chime alongside woodwinds and vintage synthesizers, creating an immersive sound that feels exotic and smooth.

This new single "The Aimless Aquanaut" picks up and develops one of the lush ambient breaks featured in "Music For Underwater Supermarkets". Roman Angelos’ extended version draws upon the influence of Steve Reich and kosmische music, bringing the listener into a state of suspended meditation. It is both meditative and reflective, and could as easily soundtrack one of the more contemplative moments in an episode of 'Stranger Things' as well as soundtrack your next visit to a spa retreat.

The Riptide and Rumble remix by producer/engineer Scott Solter is a preview of his upcoming full remix album of “Music For Underwater Supermarkets”. Solter weaves in darker ambience, with hints of early industrial, while still maintaining the aquatic feeling of the song, making for something soothing and spine-tingling. With its washes of synths strings, tinkering electronic piano, detached vocals and layered harmonies delivered in Cromwell’s lush baritone, ‘The Winter Palace’ evokes an icy cold soundscape fit for the months of winter. Where the title track of his recent album ‘Memory Box’ is about losing the power of recall, ‘The Winter Palace’ is about trying to forget a lost love, but being haunted by them in his memory. Cromwell sings to his former love “I dream of you regardless, whether I am asleep or awake”.

With a majestic sweeping synth solo, that wouldn’t sound out of place on Bowie’s ‘Low’, sonically the song sits between classic new wave artists like Joy Division or OMD and more contemporary acts like Ladytron or Black Marble.

The B-side ‘Rod, Jane and Freddy,’ with its squelchy vintage synths and rumbling krautrock beat, is a playful technicoloured instrumental named after the performance group from 1980’s ITV children’s show Rainbow.

We are thrilled that HOLOGRAM TEEN has returned to Happy Robots with her new single; a full six years and two albums since her last full release for the label.

Hologram Teen is the solo project (and anagram) of former STEREOLAB keyboardist Morgane Lhote.

Her colourful playful electronic instrumentals are heavily influenced by horror soundtracks, Italian disco and hip-hop.

Initially from Paris, Morgane moved to London when she was 20, spent nearly 20 years in New York city before moving to LA where she concentrated on her solo material. Her most recent album ‘Day-Glo Chaos’ released on Ransom Note Records was an unashamed nostalgic musical love letter to the 1980’s mixing cinematic strings, French Pop, video game soundtracks, a dash of drum and bass and vocoder vocals.

Her new single for Happy Robots is a double A-side.

A side “The Restless Cyclops” layered with synth strings, electric piano and bell sounds, is impossible to pigeonhole, it’s full spectrum pop-music that we can only describe as ‘restless disco’. And flip over the disc to the AA side ‘Hologram Twang!’ and Morgane introduces flourishes from another genre she loves; country music. Atmospheric washes combine with synth chimes and electronic slide-guitar. This could almost be the soundtrack to the opening of the pearly gates for another country legend, to be at eternal peace from perpetual heartache.

Rodney Cromwell returns just weeks after the release of his last single ‘The Winter Palace’ with a new song released for the Christmas season. ‘Cold Christmas’ was written for the annual ‘A Very Cherry Christmas’ compilation from Cherryade Records, and is released on its own right as a digital single on 9th December via Happy Robots.

This is no Cliff Richard Christmas hit though. A relentless krautrock beat propels a driving synth bass line, layered with Cromwell’s signature ARP synth strings and a thumping bass guitar. It is the most knowingly gothic song that Cromwell has released to date. 
  
As the UK descends into another round of austerity, the lyrics of ‘Cold Christmas’ are like ‘Eleanor Rigby’ turbo-charged for 2022. “Julie wanted a Xmas tree, until she fell into poverty, the house is cold and the lights are off, and now she’s getting a nasty cough”. 

‘Cold Christmas’ was recorded in Cromwell’s home studio in Catford, London and was produced by Dom Cresswell at Studio AUW in Kent.

Following up on his LP “Music For Underwater Supermarkets”, Roman Angelos now presents “Supermarkets, Underwater,” a fully reimagined remix of the original album from producer/engineer Scott Solter. Solter flips the script,  taking the bouncy and upbeat material of the original album and creating a darker and more ambient landscape.  Weaving in noise and shifting electronic percussion, Solter creates an entirely new record. Listeners dive deeper into unknown waters, no longer shopping alongside the friendly fish. 

Lead track “Swimming Through The Aisles (Teeming Mix)” uses the same irregular time signature and feel of the original, but adds in tremoloed vibraphones, reverse guitars, and electronic drums, giving the music a new feel of exploration.

On "Abyssal Plain (Backmasking Mix)", Solter uses tape manipulation and loops, audio filters, and damaged devices to take one small section of the song and enlarge it into its own unique world.

Roman Angelos is the project of Brooklyn producer Rich Bennett. Roman was invented as a vehicle for Bennett to explore his obsession with library recordings of the 60's and 70s, muzak and exotica. Bennett has also been involved in a diverse group of musical projects, including the newly reunited outsider/60s proto-punk group The Shaggs, dream-pop band Mahogany, and Brazilian funk group Limoncello.

Hauntology, post-rock and electronica collide in a mesmerizing reimagining of Rodney Cromwell's album title track 'Memory Box.'

'Memory Box' delves into the complexities of perception and the unreliability of our memories. How can we trust anything in a world where truth and honesty hold such little value? This hauntingly psychedelic song draws inspiration not only from the lucid dreamlike qualities of Marcel Proust and Enid Blyton's 'Faraway Tree' stories, but also from sonic pioneers like Broadcast, Movietone and Silver Apples.

Solemn Arcade embarks on a complete deconstruction of the original, presenting a recontextualized version of 'Memory Box.' Stripping away the vocals and immersing the song within a lo-fi and discordant sonic landscape that an all new interpretation. The listener is enveloped in a tapestry of atmospheric textures and electronic tones, as haunting synthesizers intertwine with reverberating guitars, creating an otherworldly soundscape that shimmers and evolves with each play.

Rodney Cromwell is the electronica project of Adam Cresswell. Since the release of his debut 'Age of Anxiety,’ he has been featured by the likes of NME, Electronic Sound, Huffington Post, Paste, Shindig!, Louder Than War, The Big Takeover, Magic RPM and the Bandcamp homepage with national play radio via RTE in Ireland, BBC 6 Music in the UK and RNE3 in Spain.

The Rodney Cromwell live set is a joyful mixed-media extravaganza, incorporating battered synths, video visuals and live instrumentation. He has supported A Flock of Seagulls, Pram, Death & Vanilla, Marsheaux, M!R!M, Steve Davis and many more. In 2022 he recorded a live session for Electronic Sound Magazine and played a series of live dates supporting Blancmange.

In June 2023, Rodney Cromwell will embark on a debut UK headline tour, with labelmate Roman Angelos supporting on all dates, courtesy of Happy Robots.

Rodney Cromwell is the nom-de-plume of Adam Cresswell, founding member of indie-folktronica band SALOON (who had four entries in John Peel’s Festive 50 & recorded three Peel Sessions) and one half of acclaimed electronic two piece ARTHUR & MARTHA.
 
Although Phil Collins and his infamous split with his second wife inspired its title, there is none of the bombast of Collins’ work in Cromwell’s lo-fi disco lament.  In a miserable year that has seen the passing of loved musical artists, disruption and political upheavals, the melancholia of ‘Fax Message Breakup’ is very much of the zeitgeist; a paean to despair and defeat with an incessant disco beat.  With the inherent nihilism of its chorus “I can’t do this anymore, I don’t know what it’s for” it is perhaps the perfect soundtrack for 2016.
 
The 5 track EP features four exclusive remixes. ‘Fax Message Breakup’ is remixed by HOLOGRAM TEEN (ex-STEREOLAB synth-wizardess Morgane Lhote) who brings her glitchy motorik disco sound to the party and by regular collaborator AUW, who stretches the title track into something akin to a dark Depeche Mode synth epic.  CHRIS FRAIN from Colorado remixes ‘Baby Robot’ in a 1970s space disco vein - file between Meco’s ‘Star Wars Theme’ and Space’s ‘Magic Fly’.  And London’s THE LEAF LIBRARY close the EP with a beautifully restrained remix of ‘Cassiopeia’ that sounds like Brian Eno collaborating with Galaxie 500.

The original version of ‘Fax Message Breakup’ is taken from the 2015 debut album ‘Age of Anxiety’ which was a surprising left-field critical hit featuring in over 30 ‘Best of 2015’ charts including Electronic Sound Magazine and The Electricity Club, who also named him ‘Most Promising New Act’. The track ‘Barry Was An Arms Dealer’ featured in the fan voted 2015 Official Festive 50.

ABOUT THE LEAF LIBRARY

The Leaf Library are guitarist Matt Ashton (formerly of Singing Adams and Peel favourites Saloon), singer Kate Gibson, bass player Gareth Jones and drummer / synth wizard Lewis Young. Live they are joined by guitarist Simon Nelson, also of the band Cosines. They make multi-layered, two chord drone pop, channeling the warm fuzz of Yo La Tengo, the spacious repetition of Talk Talk, and Movietone’s seaside melancholy to beautiful effect.

The band released their debut album Daylight Versions last year, a record of woozy love songs about meteorology and the incoming sea that Uncut described as “a charming debut, with songs soaked in atmospheres that conjure thoughts of hazy mists and setting suns”, and the Guardian called “a melancholy wonder”. Live they bring a volume and intensity to their performances that’s belied by the gentle drift of their records, with motorik drums busying themselves over a bed of constantly unfurling synth tones.

The band have also released a drone companion piece to last year’s album (‘Nightlight Versions’), a compilation of early recordings called ‘Different Activities, Similar Diversions’, and a number of singles on various labels, including London label wiaiwya, Beko in France and Amsterdam’s The Hooter Listens. They are currently working on a new album and a number of collaborative releases.

COSMIC ONION was the noisy lo-fi school band of Adam Cresswell who went on to form a number of other bands. SALOON (who released three albums, recorded 3 Peel Sessions and had 4 John Peel Festive 50 hits, including the 2002 number one), ARTHUR & MARTHA (who were an acclaimed electronica duo) and RODNEY CROMWELL his present act. He now also runs the record label Happy Robots.

COSMIC ONION were a musical band that merged punk, new wave and proto-Britpop making lo-fi music 4-track cassette music with the cheapest musical instruments (mostly borrowed), kids toys and found sounds from around the house. Influenced by Pixies, Joy Division, shoegaze and grunge they sounded, for the most part, like the worst of all worlds.  

Supermarket 2020 was Cresswell's first solo recording conceived as shopping-mall music for a supermarket in a distant nightmarish dystopian future.
