Haram is a sound artist born in Casablanca (1987).
An autodidact sound artist based in Marrakech, Haram produces cosmic, dark ambient, experimental
sounds. Borrowing from Ahwach culture in Morocco many of his sounds propel ancestral voices into 21st
Century ensembles, unexpected genres get combined, cutted and warped. Working with a mixture of
Berber analog instruments as well as with found video footage and electronic sounds, this project
is a place where the artist observes and recreates the ancient ritual of Ahwach. In this ritual men pour
themselves into a poetic trance flow through their connection to cosmic natural forces through singing and
dancing, building layers of voices with improvisation. Often times they have ‘battles’ between different
towns. Haram then brings his own ‘Ahwach’ where his cosmic connection with the natural world is poured
out through electronic and modern sounds.
The future development of this projects calls for a research platform in which both the traditional Ahwach
singers and Haram can create a place for exchange where both ancient and modern sound practices are
relinked and brought together in a collaborative experiential project. Currently searching for collaborators
locally and internationally with whom to develop strategies towards the realization of the project .
