With the arrival of the July heat we reignite our Movements Series and bring you Volume XIX from Penelope (@penelope_uk).  Anjunadeep and Balamii Radio resident, Penelope has graced audiences on dancefloors as acclaimed as Printworks, the Warehouse Project, and Lost Village Festival and as far reaching as Utrecht, Albania and Hong Kong. With this pedigree and track record under this Londoner’s belt, it comes with little surprise and with great zeal that the enclosed 57 minutes and 59 seconds are nothing short of transporting. Penelope has delivered the emblematic reopening of this series with a summery invitation to leave the last year and change behind, move past the Summer That Never Was and focus immediately on what has been rebestowed upon us while ushering the listener to dreamingly imagine the dancefloors and thriving festival fields to come. From an 80s tinged, Miami Vice, saxophone prelude that passes onto a jaunty, staggered, analog bounce, the mix moves upward and outward to euphoric heights tempered by floating, angelic chords of a dog-days-of-summer meets cumulus cloud gazing connotation before ascending to dream state breaks. Dreamy, serene, and meditative, we are proud to share this soundtrack to the Summer That Was.

We continue our monthly mix series Movements, bringing you mixes from DJs and producers we admire. Volume IX brought to you by @blooplondon radio boss Dean Mir (@deanmir). Built with heart, humor and a devotion to broadcasting electronic music, bloop radio is a family run operation that has risen quickly since its incorporation in 2015.  With Dean heading operations, programming and A&R, bloop now boasts listeners tuning in from over 60 countries daily – no small feat in an ever-expanding landscape of platforms, outlets, tastes and frankly, noise. 

Aside from his successes in the crowded world of online radio, Dean’s creative streak shines in his abilities behind turntables. Along with hosting his weekly show ‘Interlude’ on bloop. and running live streamed rooftop parties throughout the summer, Mir has earned a reputation for himself in the warm up circuit in London, supporting Apparat, Agoria, Dark Sky, Jennifer Cardini, Fort Romeau, Pantha du Prince, Patrice Baumel, and Stephan Bodzin over the last year – to name but a few.

At first listen to his Movements mix one thing is evident, Dean is a dreamer. His selections are eloquent, peaceful and reassuring. The mix floats through what feels like an hour long guided tour in mindfulness, with each angelic melody mixed at the perfect phrasing of the next, creating an effortless and balanced ride which Mir has become known for in his warm ups - readying the floor by bathing the listener in what feels like musical mysticism.

Literally meaning “God will help” in Hebrew, Lazarus Mathebula tacked the suffix ‘–man’ to his given name creating Lazarusman, the moniker of his work. To some, this softens the blow of a biblical name, but to others, this twist of meaning, “God will help man” epitomizes Lazarus’ sophisticated lyricism wrought with word play. 

Since embarking on collaborations with Stimming in 2010, Lazarusman has carved a unique role for himself as a slam poet come lyricist in the world of electronic music. A path which few have wandered without slipping into the sides of gimmicky house stabs and diva-esque realms, but Lazarus, who rarely prepares his delivery before recording, freestyles prose starkly contrasting the aforementioned - biting into heavier, often philosophical terrain.  One only needs to look so far as his latest track, “Breathe” to appreciate Mathebula’s ability in turning even the simplest topic into a commentary on constructs. His catalogue, which includes collaborations with Aki Bergen, Alex Dimou, Djuma Soundsystem, DJ T., Hyenah, Florian Kruse, Re.you, Tigerskin, and Till Von Sein, presents an ever expanding archive of Lazarusman’s inner thoughts. No subject is off the table for the Johannesburg based slam poet.

In our tenth installment of Movements, Lazarus exposes moments of his lyricism, but the focus of the mix falls on his proficiency on turntables. He builds from a sense of brooding driving the listener’s expectation down a line only to veer to an unforeseen plain. From here the journey progresses, beautifully twisting and turning like a moment of his word play, right until he delivers the final blow.

For this part of the story we welcome Harbinger Kurt. Self-described as ‘somewhere between space cowboy, dude rancher and German engineer,’ Harbinger Kurt co-head the London based outfit Moodroom Collective which have brought Giegling’s DJ Dustin, Watergate, Katermukke, Viken Arman and Lauer to town in the last year. 

With an EP and a couple remixes in the pipe Harbinger Kurt are slated to play their sole show this summer at Somewhere In the Distance on 15 July, a two day festival on a forested island an hour east of Berlin. Joining them on the bill are Anthony Georges Patrice, Baikal, Matthias Schober, Neil Flynn and many more.

Movements Vol. XIII: @itsyarni

We continue our monthly mix series "Movements," bringing you mixes from DJs and producers we admire. Volume XIII brought to you by Yarni (@itsyarni). Hailing from Sheffield, the heart of England’s industrial north, Yarni’s relatively fresh foray into the world of electronic music production is already turning seasoned heads in the space. With the release of his long player ‘Entkommen’ in 2017 and releases on Exploited, Nie Wieder Schlafen, N I G H T N O I S E, O’RS and Nightcolours, Yarni has already received praise from Richie Hawtin, Mind Against, DJ Harvey, Paco Osuna, Riva Starr and BBC 6 for his works to date. 

Initially a guitarist turned percussionist, Yarni sites Guy Ritchie’s “Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels” as a pivotal source of inspiration in his musical development. A quick A/B Test of the soundtrack and Yarni’s catalog to date and the keen listener will draw the parallel – aesthetically speaking there is a beautiful link in sound design despite the final outputs being entirely divergent.  His productions fill the audible spectrum with rich textures and cutting yet finessed, off kilter percussion.  And like Guy Ritchie, there is an ever present undertone of playfulness tucked in between a more serious façade of rich and brooding melodics. 

Much the same can be said of Yarni’s contribution to the Movements series.  He’s delivered us a nearly two hour tour, oscillating between the various levels of his production aesthetic, ebbing from points of utter seriousness only to flow to lighter realms and then back again.  It’s a beautiful journey well on par with his productions to date. Keep an eye on this guy.

For the fifteenth installment of our Movements series we are delighted to have Melbourne based producer Joe Miller step up to the tables. With releases on All Day I Dream, Dream Culture, L’enfant Terrible, Traum, and Manual Music, Miller has cultivated an ethereal and meditative sound that irrespective of mood upon entry, basks the listener in an angelic symphony which quickly departs terra firma to soar amongst the cirrus clouds. One need only look as far as Miller’s A side ‘A Sudden Taste of Redemption’ on his latest release with Dream Culture to wander in the contemplative wonderland of his imagination.

Aside from his talents in production, the set Miller has delivered is nothing short of stunning. Oft being adept in production does not necessarily translate to talent in the mix, but for Miller this could not be farther from the case. Here he has crafted a delicate and mesmerizing voyage, that sets off from Mazzy Star’s bonfire appropriate folk ballad ‘Into Dust' serenely lifting you up and up and away.

With much ado, we bring you Volume XVIII supplied by London based, Belgian raised Arnold (@arnold_audioldn). As resident and co-founder of Audio London, a burgeoning collective making headway in the both the Big Smoke and across the Channel in Antwerp, Arnold’s profile is nothing short of clandestine to those outside his circle, but his taste and eloquence behind the turntables give us faith that that may not last long. We recently had Arnold open for our party with Viken Arman and Oceanvs Orientalis this spring past and his delivery and even keeled demeanor in building the room prompted us to invite him to our Movements series. Between selecting old friend’s such as Dorisburg’s “Tundra” and future classics we have yet to identify, Arnold has crafted a delicate and balanced journey reiterating the prowess of a fine selector. Hypnotic and soul searching from end to end, we are proud to share one of the best mixes we’ve heard the last few months.
