The Space Between Us is honoured to announce its next offering - Corner Taken Quickly - the debut EP from Naarm-based artist Al Dente / @al-den-te. The intriguing producer, who comprises ⅓ of the acclaimed Neurocrank / @neurocrankk family and ½ of Nebula / @neb-u-la, shares what is quite possibly the most positive thing to come out of Melbourne’s extended lockdowns - the Corner Taken Quickly EP. Propelled first and foremost by a love of soccer, Al Dente’s EP title pays homage to one of the most iconic moments in Liverpool’s history – fans will know. Spurred on by other influential factors, from film to TV shows – and of course, much musical digging during months spent at home, the EP is sonically metamorphosed into this warpy, wonky 5-tracker which doesn’t take itself too seriously. With a collaboration with fellow Naarm-based producer @explicitjoy and a harmoniously energetic remix from none other than Montreal’s queen of turbo, Maara / @maara, the EP is primed for the most quirky and adventurous of dance floors –  and is as bendy as Trent Alexander Arnold takes his corners.

Setting the overarching atmosphere, Little Jerry is a dark cauldron of bubbling, fizzing electronics. Foreboding pads swell and deflate amongst skittish percussion to cook up the most off-kilter opener – almost as off-kilter as the Seinfeld episode for which is this track’s namesake – if you know, you know. The Translator turns up the temperature – an assembly of oddball percussive elements which skip alongside the warpy bassline and eerie echoes of Scarlett Johansson’s iconic vocal. Tension builds amidst sinister pads before making space for high hats and the kick – a wobbly intro which steadies itself all the way to the dance floor. 

Stepping wholeheartedly into emphatic club territory, Seven maintains the air of spookiness embodied throughout the release with its snarling bassline which rolls against familiar warps and vocal splinters. Next, Al Dente collaborates with Explicit Joy on Sonic Dialogue; a bouncy, stripped back, continuation of quirky, club-oriented moods.   

Last but not least, Maara takes the power output dial on The Translator and turns it up to the maximum; generating her Transductor Mix – an electrifying reimagination of the original. An explosive end to Al Dente’s EP – in true Maara style.

Here we go again! The second release on MARICAS Records is hot and ready to handle, fresh off the kitchens of two of the maestros of the moment, Saorsie and Roza Terenzi. Saoirse fires up the ignition with Dama Latina, an upfront housey number. Her tight, infectious groove bounces along incessantly, punctuated by an orchestra of bleeps and bloops, horns and sirens like one big sexy traffic jam. She keeps our fire burning low and slow with You Can Come. It’s underwater-funk with a lazy, heavily syncopated bassline overlaid with shimmering washy melodies and vocal on repeat, all dripping wet with reverb. We’re deep down in Chuggsville and it’s hot as hell. 

On the flip side, Roza flips us out. Kandy Floss sends all kinds of creepy frequencies bouncing around the inside of our skulls. It's not long before a throbbing bassline creeps up on us in the dark and takes us on a ride, like a train through a haunted house of eerie sounds and voices. We cling to the steady groove because all other sounds are moving around us, like ghosts and ghouls erratically weaving in and out of each other over our heads.

We continue our spooky ride with Triple D must be something good because we’ve had three of them and we’re really feeling it. Helek K’s spoken words echo around us like a spiritual guide leading us through our trip, her moaning like a haunting lullaby. Driving bass all the way here, lifted by flickering percussion but darkened by the deep squelch of wobbly bass tone. Much psychedelic doof energy on this side of the disk

Junction Forest is a new label operated by Junction Records Store, out of Seoul. The first release is from our associate Tim a.k.a S.O.N.S and is a trance 3-tracker with a few twists.
It is titled after an (in)famous forest in the middle of Seoul, straightforwardly called... Seoul Forest.

Some words from S.O.N.S about the release:

So I got some complains about my last album, reportedly containing no danceable tracks,
"I tried to play it out and everybody left" said one angry customer. "I thought it sounded fine but it clears the floor 100%" wrote another one.

Well this time I took a different approach.

On the A side, you get Tteuggeopge (meaning "Hot" in Korean) - it's a mixture of acid techno and psy-trance breakdowns, with some vocal samples taken from an old Korean movie, a jazz intro and a long 9.09minutes build up (figures are never chosen randomly) which I hope won't let the dancefloor unmoved - if you dare to play it!
On the flip you get the ambient version... no! I was joking! you get 2 other trance tracks
Psychic Link is a mixture of Hard & Goa Trance sounds with breakbeats samples & a surprising deep tribal interlude in the middle to cool down the room for a minute.
And finally Snow White And The Seven Mushrooms is an angry bad tripping tribute to 90s progressive house sounds. Like if Robin S took too much acid and is haunted by some supernatural creatures.

Kasra V’s Hyperdelic EP, his first release on Radiant Records, showcases the producer’s attentive ear for textural and rhythmic play. His last EP from 2018, Akasa, was a collection of dreamy, break-driven pieces, and a more ambient collaboration with Dopplereffekt; timbre and meticulously tuned sonics were also in focus then, but we now hear a reduction of form, and with it, a saturation of style.

“Voice note to self” kicks off the EP with a boom-bap drum loop. The rhythm continues as percussive elements are added and removed, adhering to the groove and its growing complexity. A warm bassline chugs along, pitched vocals mumble into the static, and an ascendant pad begins to give the track a gorgeous depth: a horizon. Following is a remix of the same track by Byron B. Yeates and Roza Terenzi, adapting certain samples from Kasra V’s production and looping them up to a brisk 142 BPM. As can be expected from these two, the kick’s punchy 4/4 structure is buttressed by crisp percussion and clever, unexpected rhythms.

On the B-side, “Vesper” takes us back to downtempo. Bumping on at around 80 BPM, Kasra V builds upon a drum-machine loop with processed percussion samples: a snare-roll one could hear in a jungle track, chopped claps panning across the break, and so on. And the slow, warm gurgle of an 808 comes in just at the point of fracture, holding it all together. “Night Prime” extends the EP’s principle of a drum loop serving as the skeleton – with greater drama, somehow. Like in “Voice note to self”, we hear vocal samples, but here  they swerve in and out of clarity; we break into unexpected moments of silence, and the loop restarts; 3 minutes in, a huge, minor piano chord breaks upon the track like dusk. “Warm up great” closes the EP with the blend of left-field groove and dissonance one might associate with Future Sound of London or early work of The Chemical Brothers. The textures and tunings of each sample are so dense, so delicious, Kasra V lets us savour them for the last 20 seconds of the EP, lost in the reverb of a singly struck piano key.
