What describes this style of music best? 

So first a bit of back info on Funkot. Funkot stands for Funky Kota, it originated in the Kota district of Jakarta, Indonesia in the mid 90s. Essentially it's a sample/remix genre based on a fusion of house music and dangdut. It's defined by it's high tempo(typically played at 198+bpm), pumpin & dangdut style bassline, funky drum pattern, cowbell, downbeat sections(sudden tempo/style switches), and its heavy usage of samples and melodies from other songs. There are many reoccuring and popular melodies and samples you'll hear in funkot tracks and sometimes even inside jokes amongst DJs and producers. It's very much its own thing and focused on having a good time. 

What and when did you get into this genre? 

I initially discovered the genre around 2009-2010, however it wasn't till a couple years later that I finally bought my first funkot CD, Asian Funkot Infect Vol 2, that I really got into it. To this day it's still my favorite album and I regularly play tracks off of it such as Chiu Fo New Pumpin 2013 I've played in this mix I've done.

My influences as far as funkot goes include Aki, Shisotex, DJ Kubus, Willy_L3, DJ Jet Baron, DJ Ned, Liet, JMBS, Endro Chan, NoX2™, and DJ Ronny. They all have their own style of producing and are generally some of my favorite funkot producers. 

So for this mix I wanted to give a broader overview of funkot as a style. It's a style that can't really be understood based on one track alone. This is a handful of some of my favorite tracks and includes many exclusive tracks, either promos from producers or remixes made exclusively for mine or another DJ's use who've shared them with me which are noted by the brackets

So for a bit of backstory on this mix. Freeform was the start of my journey into electronic music 12 years ago and has always had a very special place in my heart and life as a well. 

Over the years befriending many of the artists who's music has helped me through the hardest times in my life. I always loved the elegance that can be expressed in a freeform mix unlike almost any other style of music out there. It thrives with emotion and feeling that can both bring you to tears or make you happy as day with a groove that came make you dance and feel alive.

Noizenecio-Colliding Forces (Hju Guest Mix)

Fiyafly first discovered drum and bass through the local rave scene in her hometown of Chicago. After experiencing desert raves while living for a year in Arizona she started with Hardstyle. Back in Chicago she enjoyed Juke. But once she stumbled upon drum and bass there was no turning back. She quickly developed an addiction to the fast bpm's and heavy grimey basslines that could only be cured by going to every DnB event she could find, near or far. She first realized that she wanted to start DJing moments after she first heard Jump Up and her love for the music could no longer be contained by dancing alone. She started by taking MIA member Zebo's class at Colombia College and by that summer played her first gig. Fiyafly plays mostly jump up, but includes a sprinkling of her favorites from all the other flavours that make up drum and bass. She is currently learning how to make her own tunes next, with some collaborations already in the pipeline, keep your eyes on her SoundCloud. FIyafly's mission is spread love and bass, support everyone around the world pushing the sound, inspire more females to get involved, help our local scene grow, and to preserve the lost art of beat matching by ear. Hardcore Junglists United is Proud to announce a dynamic and East Influenced artist, Shimotsukei to our family. A magician of diverse and niche music that is impactful and beautiful. Showcasing her approach for niche styles in her own unique blend, we present Artcore.

Artcore is a blanket term for a unique hybrid style of electronic and orchestral/classic style that's popular amongst underground Japanese artists and Bemani games. It's not a commonly mixed style and it makes for a unique challenge. This mix in particular is a blend of artcore, epic/trailer/film score style classical, and ambient/chillout tracks making for what I feel is a rather unique experience.

Shimotsukei Artcore (Residency Mix)

Graz came down to us from sweet Seattle, with infectious tunes everyone gets into and a harder and darker edge for all of you junglists and gabbers out there. Originally more of a digital hardcore / IDM person in the beginning, Graz really fell in love with fast and aggressive music like Atari Teenage Riot and Aphex Twin.  From then on he dove into Drum N Bass and Happy Hardcore, but most of his inspiration to spin came from his first rave in 2004 where he saw how powerful music can really be with the right settings.
Graz succeeds in his goal of getting everyone moving on the same floor, having a good time with their friends. An ambassador of the rave, with no allegiance to the politics of the scene and its subgenre squabbles. Graz is here to get everyone goin buck dancing. This particular mix consists mostly of older tracks produced between 2007-2014 featuring an emphasis on mashups and amen breaks.

Graz: Throwback Breakcore Mix (Resident Mix)

Saiyan was a normal teenager, until one fateful day at a science exhibit he was bitten by a radioactive hardcore DJ, gifting him with incredible powers. Speed, strength, the proportionate drinking prowess of ten normal men, and the ability to turn comic book origin stories into DJ bios, are just some of the fantastic abilities granted to him.

So of course he turned his powers to cartoonish supervillainy, as you do. And it was good.

But after years of using his gifts for evil to great effect, he grew bored, and sought a new challenge. That challenge came in the form of taking over managing Luna-C's iconic KFA Recordings imprint, a position he was uniquely suited for due to being just the right amount of batshit crazy. And it was also good.

This mix contains a selection of upcoming KFA releases from now into 2019, with a few bits from recent releases such as Kniteforce Radio All-Stars, Ghoul Skool, and The Triple Threat sprinkled in for good measure, all mixed up in Saiyan's trademark quick-mixed style (with a bit of three deckery to speed things up for good measure).

Thomas Kelly is primarily a Trance/Hard Dance Dj out of the great city of Chicago. 

He has been destroying dancefloor and ears across the country for the last 10 years. 

He is currently the head of KOTC Chicago, which is an offshoot chapter of KOTC Global out of Los Angeles. 

Thomas is also one of the head curators over @ ToyMaker Music, which has presented the coveted BarnYard Boogie for the last 17 years. 

Thomas, musically is one of the best Underground Trance Dj's in the United States, but....he also dabbles in many other genres, such as Hardcore, Hardstyle, Hard Dance, Techno and House. He doesn't sequester himself to any one style. He is very diverse!! 

So get ready for an awesome set with one of the best in the Midwest, from his sets that he plays, to the events that him an his KOTC/ToyMaker Music crew throw, this guy does it all:)

GYPSY KID-Bringing the dark underground vibes to the dancefloor. His musical selections bring the heavy bass lines and he’s not afraid to push the underground sound in every set. Having grown up in the iconic Chicago house scene, he’s not a stranger to being around the D.J. world. With a mixed spectrum of musical influences his sets will always bring a mixture of different sounds and genres.

He is currently promoting and preforming at a monthly in Oakland,California with Concrete Jungle Sessions. Concrete Jungle sessions is a movement that started in Los Angeles and now has a home in the Bay area. As a producer he’s part of the label MOBCORE Chicago records and
is looking forward to releasing new material in the future.
