Two decades after anchoring the Hardkiss album Delusions of Grandeur with the iconic song Three Nudes in A Purple Garden, Hawke releases the second single from The Dark Art of Light Work and gently ties the bow on a generations worth of Hardkiss music. 

The Dark Art of Light Work flawlessly weaves between genres and you can hear the esoteric and contemplative influence of the weekly Yoga DJ sets that Gavin Hardkiss creates with his wife in San Anselmo California. Also, the African rhythm and global instrumentation that has been a foundation of the Hawke sound. After all, Gavin grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, and his African roots are interwoven with his Californian optimism.

Bells of San Anselmo embodies a full sound with traditional Indian Sarod and vocals by Paige Sergent inside a flying machine that flies at slower than the speed of sound. 

Hardkiss Music brought in smooth operator Nick Warren with Nicolas Rada to provide a flawless excursion with drawn out moments of dainty delight. 

The Gavin Hardkiss remix takes the song back into old school Hardkiss territory with a breakbeat feel and ethereal gated female vocals.

Hawke - Bells of San Anselmo (Remixes)

There is no California electronic music song more iconic than Raincry. Produced by Scott Hardkiss, Raincry set the underground on fire in 1994 with its evocative and emotional plea. It was one of several Hardkiss Music vinyl releases that featured on the album Delusions of Grandeur, as well as Sasha & Digweeds’ seminal Northern Exposure and FIFA ‘99. Delusions of Grandeur went to #1 on the Rolling Stone independent chart.

A lifetime or two later, Hardkiss Music label boss Gavin Hardkiss raises the ante with a fiery new version which permits DJs to tinker with the Ooo Ya Hey and make it their own.

David Christopher of Rabbit In The Moon provides a yearning ambient take that was originally produced after Scott’s untimely passing on March 25, 2013.

“Raincry was one of those tracks that when you heard it in a club it felt like the oxygen in the room changed. That you were changed…  The night Scott Hardkiss passed I felt inspired to orchestrate my feelings of what it would be like to ascend from our physical world into the spiritual one. My mix is also inspired by my love of Constance Demby and her groundbreaking album called Novus Magnificat” - David Christopher

The Matt Abra remix grooves with subtlety, balancing cut ups of the original vocal with oriental melodies and subdued elegance.

Recorded in December 2021, the song has road tested in recorded DJ sets for John Digweed’s Transitions and the Selador Sessions, as well as live at Outside Lands, All Day I Dream and BottleRock.

Tribal rhythms float between heaven and earth with punctuated breakdowns with manic percussion and filtered horn swells that apply more energy and relief.

Duser has exhibited artwork and done murals throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico and Peru. One notable mural collaboration was at Public Works in San Francisco with Banksy, Chor Boogie and a handful of other iconic Bay Area artists.

This event was quite astonishing, unique and amazing. Held in a cathedral in San Francisco pimped out by St Joseph's Art Foundation, I got to DJ from the pulpit. I ain't Christian but I always admired the architecture, acoustics and grandeur of a church.  

Chicago DJ Justin Reid, Mason Bates and their crew at Mercury Soul invited me to play.

Mason is a Grammy award-winning American composer and the first composer-in-residence of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He has also been in residence with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, and the California Symphony.

Mason scored a live 20 piece brass ensemble to perform a debut of my song After The Storm after which I got to DJ for an hour.  During this time, I took the liberty of diving into symphonic electronic sounds, disco and African vibes.

Originally released on vinyl only, these three tracks were B-sides of singles that appeared on the 1995 classic Hardkiss double album Delusions of Grandeur. If Delusions … was the bomb, then these three moody remixes are some radioactive fallout from that initial blast of electronic dance music creativity. 

“Raincry” by God Within was Scott Hardkiss’ breakthrough single. It began with a tribal chant sample in a small garage in Twin Peaks, San Francisco. Within the year, that chant was being dropped by DJs all around the world. This mix has a slower burn than the A-side, but all the epic emotion and drama. 

“3 Moods in a Gurple Parden” is Robbie Hardkiss’ remix of Gavin Hardkiss’ first single as Hawke. Here, the unique tech / break / house meditation “3 Nudes in a Purple Garden” gets funked up with latin percussion and a stomping bass line added to the ethereal melodies of the original. 

“Steal From The Rich” is also a Robbie remix. This one is a slowed down, funked up reworking of God Within’s “The Phoenix.” Recorded in Nottingham at DIY Studios, this DC Go-Go inspired mix is quite the departure from the big, banging mixes on the original single by Rabbit in the Moon and Scott Hardkiss.

Infinitely Gentle Blows (Infinite Aural Hallucination Remix)

ThrillHammer is a collaborative project inadvertently created by the late Anthony "Bubbles" Torres. After the tragic murder of Bubbles, Coltorious approached DJ/Producer Duserock about collaborating on a track that he and Bubbles were writing. This spawned the single "Bohemian Berlin Disco."

A San Francisco anthem in the making, there are remixes from a cross section of local dance music producers. The Original version by Colton and Ryan lunges forward with fury. Video and audio collagist Dtek offers up the delightful Shoplifters Remix. Gavin Hardkiss and Ryan dub out the Shoplifters version. Gavin then takes an acid direction with his late night excursion. Manny Alfarez (Monarch and The Great Northern) and Phil Rene Collis (Bachelors of Science) spawn the Sleight of Hands Remix.  

Draw your own conclusions from the song’s lyrics, but there’s certainly enough to entertain the new, the old and the fabulous from the Castro, the Tenderloin and the Marina.

Fondly remembered, Bubbles left skid marks and scandals everywhere he visited. His Facebook videos from Berlin, London, Santa Fe and festivals and nightclubs in California are testimony to his unabandoned quest for freedom. His music lives on in this release on Hardkiss Music.
