Firing on all cylinders in 2022 is Italian house pushing label, Black Box Records. Marking the fifth release on the label is a four track vinyl VA that packs a punch. Behind the controls for the EP they have called on a healthy selection of artists including Land 9, Shacklo, DJ GLC and label founder, Vito Fattore. Dynamic dance floor heat from four budding artists.

Launching you into the release is Land 9 who provides an infectious number with a killer depth and groove at the heart of the track. “4MAI” twists and turns blissfully, utilising a killer vocal sample which instantly lifts the mood of the listener. Shacklo’s “Another Liability” is a crisp and punchy encounter with a certain spring in its step, tight and rolling from the get go, ready for the peak times. Dreamy pads doing the business here.

On the flip side is DJ GLC’s “Euro Dream”, a huge sound here from the talented Italian, four to the floor elasticated grooves throughout, nodding to the title of the track. Smooth synths manoeuvre their way around the driven structure of the track. Shutting things down is label founder Vito Fattore with his “Since “87” bomb, rough and ready, cruising on a wobbling bass line before being met with housey chords, igniting the flame of the track.

Black Box Records proved once more they are enforcers of classy house cuts that are ripe and ready for the dance floor, with plenty more in the pipeline for this year.

Parisian duo Masomenos deliver their new LP ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomena’ this May, coming via the Automatic Writing imprint and comprised of eleven originals, several of which feature Amsterdam’s San Proper.
Masomenos have always explored parallel worlds with their music, fusing an amalgamation of influences and bringing into their universe all the humour and kindness they’ve met on their path. Their music, weird and intriguing for some, lively and trippy for others, is like an ongoing story told over more than 15 years of musical production. Alongside the music is their graphic design accompaniment of funny creatures, and mystical figures. In this new opus, they surf the frontier between their club sound and home listening, inviting friends over for the ride. Julien Quentin at the piano, Adrien Boisseau on the viola, and San Proper on vibe & vocals.
Across the ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomena’ LP Masomenos traverse through a variety of styles, from dynamic, microhouse compositions like ‘Tournicoti’, ‘Ainamor’ and ‘Planet X feat. San Proper’, which bring together bumpy, modulating drums with textural synths and sprinklings of jazz throughout. Also on offer is some heavy dub influence found in cuts like ‘Hollow’, ‘Cleopatra feat. San Proper’ and title-track ‘UAP’ which utilise bubbling stab echoes, swirling atmospherics and heavy doses of sub bass.
The album also sees many weird and wonderful explorations straddling the lines between electronica and house, like the computer game style of opening track ‘Rêve’, acid infused pad driven workout ‘Are You Sure’, cinematic feel of ‘Mystery Unsolved’ and closing cut ‘Daffy’s Land’ which wanders through six minutes of unfolding bass growls, nuanced rhythms and shimmering synth sequences.

RELEASE NOTES 

Denver-based Seafoam (Brian Cavender) is by far the most prolific of the talented Cavender brothers, but he has remained elusive for his 2+ decades long career in deep funk. After releasing a one-off 12-inch in 1999 on a small Denver label, Seafoam quickly found his way to the Guidance family by way of gatherings at Miami’s Winter Music Conference. A string of three twelves on Guidance from 2000 to 2003 cemented his legacy early in his career, however, having never quite reached the same heights as some of the Guidance greats, Seafoam’s output mysteriously declined around the time of the label’s demise. New releases dried up until the formative reissue campaign of Paris-based Rue De Plaisance in 2017, which culminated in the essential Collected Works 1999-2005 double LP. The flood gates opened, and a whole new generation of diggers and labels turned to his sound. And Seafoam, seemingly untouched by the passage of time, hunkered down in the studio with a steady release schedule—a new lease on life for the occult deep house assassin. 

“Swing Set” was birthed on Colfax Avenue and instantly became the focal point of Deep Club #07 with its heavy drum programming and distorted vocals. “Ha!” is a straight-ahead, no frills keyboard banger. On the flip, label acquaintance Snad (Kimochi Sound, Minibar, Courtesy of Balance, etc.) continues his meteoric rise with his signature tech house take on “Ha!”, while Seafoam injects a sample of his own drum work on “Jabo”, a trippy downtempo ode to James Brown’s esteemed drummer.

Hit the flip to B1 ‘Black Analysis’ and you’re led deeper into a dream like state. As stabs pulsate outwardly into the unknown, woozy chords evolve from their core to envelop your consciousness. The broken beat of drums sway gently back and fore, inducing a blissful level of serenity that is nothing short of magic. The EP is rounded off with the slightly heavier flow of B2 ‘No Analysis’, with straight up drums meeting a pulsing bass and hypnotic lead, which fizz into multi-layered delights as the mood rises. 

In short, this Electronic music at its most sumptuous: where texture and warmth lift the soul, revive the senses and impart a rare sense of ‘the art of the possible’.

In the meantime, he has become a benchmark artist in particular for his passion, his extreme mastery of analog material and his ability to craft dream like soundscapes and mystical house atmospheres; who has seen him collaborate in recent years with the biggest names in house: Larry Heard, Boyd Jarvis, Tevo Howard and Robert Owens on excellent labels such as Lies, Vibraphone, Crème organization, Hotmix or Mathematics. For this new release, the fruit of a maturation of several months in his studio, the made in Perugia prodigy has once again surrounded himself with the master of chicago house, the legendary Merwyn Sanders of Virgo Four (who already appeared as a remixer on the Warrior Dance part 4 in 2012 on SKYLAX) on vocals. Its inimitable style is a clever mix of chicago house tinged with the most classy techno touches, “on the dance floor” will delight both fans of the purest house but also those who are also followers of the original techno made in detroit.
