The feminine has always been worshipped in Indian culture in various forms. This wonderful song by the great Tamil poet, Mahakavi Bharathiyar is in praise of the goddess and his experience of her. The song by Sounds of Isha is set to a tune as an offering to Linga Bhairavi Devi.

Linga Bhairavi is the most exuberant expression of the Divine Feminine, residing in a triangular-shaped abode at the Velliangiri Foothills. Unique in her manifestation in the form of a linga, Devi was consecrated by Sadhguru as a powerful energy form with a solidified mercury core. Representing the creative and nurturing aspects of the universe, she is the ultimate manifestation of the Mother Goddess – powerful and all-encompassing.

Thunbam illadha nilaiye shakthi

Sadhguru has often said "Most of the time you are thinking about life, not living life". How very true! We spend more time thinking about yesterday or worrying about tomorrow. The hindi word "kal" refers to both tomorrow and yesterday - probably equating them as they are both non-existential, given that our experience of life is only the moment that we are in right now. However, the "kal" is where our mind seems to spend a considerable amount of time. If only we could ​be constantly aware that this moment is the only reality, we could live our life fully. It would be a celebration of being alive. This song very beautifully captures this sentiment playing with the hindi word "kal" to accentuate the plight of the mind caught between the fictitious kal's. We could tell you more about the song, but you will have to wait till... tomorrow ;)!

Kal Kal

While words have their intellectual appeal, instrumental music can sometimes create an openness that language cannot. Among the many instrumental pieces Sounds of Isha has created to manifest different ambiences, Madhyamavathi is one of the more beautiful ones. The name reflects the raga on which the song is based. 

We have also had the fortune of some part-time volunteers, who have contributed to our music. We could use this opportunity to say how Sounds of Isha is not just some small group of people in the ashram but consists of so many meditators all over India and the world, all contributing to the music and connected with the common bond of Sadhguru's Grace. 

The flute melody for this piece was composed by one of our meditators. He wanted to offer it to sadhguru and as we worked with it to create a song, we had the fortune of roping in a few more contributors from amongst our volunteers. The result is what you hear. 

We had no particular plan as to what ambience to manifest through this song. However, from our experience, we find that it can be soulful, meditative or relaxing–soothing and settling.

‘Wholeness’ was a 90-Day program conducted by Sadhguru in 1994, with a small band of seekers. Many years later, with the Isha Yoga Center more established, ‘Wholeness’ became the name of a 7-Day introductory program, also conducted by Sadhguru.

One of our early attempts at instrumental music, this song, ‘Wholeness’, was intended as an ambience to start the program on the first day – a way for the participants to settle into Sadhguru’s presence and be open to the process.The name ‘Wholeness’ has managed to stick all these years, thanks to the program, but the music has undergone various transformations and permutations. We have also been fortunate to have several professional artists come and contribute their expertise, enhancing the overall musicality of the piece. Here is the latest rendering – a live recording in the presence of Sadhguru.
