In hour 2 we welcome one of Detroit's finest, Scott Grooves to Solid Steel. He was part of Kevin Saunderson's Inner City project, released his debut album for Soma and collaborated with many legendary figures, and here he delivers his latest concept 'Overdubs' featuring live percussion, Keyboards & mixed together by Scott along with Ian Finklestien (keyboards & engineer). This is what he had to say;
 "The name is fitting because it simply explains the function with just 2 words Over..Dub. Also I would like to add a few more elements to the Overdubapproach in addition to my djing and venture out later this year to a ear near U. I would like to further acknowledge the original composers for providing some true inspiration & musical direction"

Solid Steel (23rd January) Our guest in Hour 1 is Legowelt, a man of many guises,  but it's his most well known alias that delivers an exclusive mix for Solid Steel. He said this about his mix;
"A lot of unreleased stuff all over the place, mixed on the fly in a crude energetic manner on my old 80s Inkel mixer with built in analog delay recorded on a reel tape deck on slow speed. The music is a bit melancholic, a bit romantic, for grim overcast days of snow and rain with some sun rays coming in occasionally…. a prelude to the spring. Slowly mixing towards a happier vibe. No shallow dumb inbred shit for "Blokes" this is for mad dealers and freaks!"

In Hour 2 this week we kick off a new regular feature for Solid Steel - Record Store Residency. Launching off the back of our successful RSD 2014 special, each month we’ll be asking some of the best record shops from around the world to contribute a 60 minute mix, showcasing the music they love. First up it’s Drift Record Shop from Devon in the UK, who deliver us a mix and told us "The shop curation is pretty scatty, so to avoid too much of a discordant listen we focused primarily on drum machines, synths, pianos and organs." Solid Steel (6th February) We welcome Mike Simonetti in Hour 1 this week, who grew up on New York 80's hardcore punk and went on to form Troubleman Unlimited, Italians Do It Better and now has a new project 'Pale Blue', which is a collaboration with Elizabeth Wight of the band Silver Hands. The mix concentrates on quality over quantity, opening with some words from Henry Rollins from 1985 and delving into some vintage acid and Chicago House from DJ ESP, DJ Hyperactive and Paul Johnson. He described his mix as "music for the dark illegal parties with no emergency exits"

Solid Steel (13th February)We don't know much about our guest Ross From Friends in Hour 2, except that he wasn't in a popular cafe based 90's US sitcom, but he has produced some quality music which has seen spins on Solid Steel, plus Skream and Toddla T on Radio 1. His EP Alex Brown is the first release on the Breaker Breaker record label which is out next week and he told us;
"I decided to assemble a selection of artists and labels I’m listening to at the moment, and compile my favourites of their selection. As with the Alex Brown EP, this mix is to strike particular contrasts between solo bedroom Techno binges: sludgy and reclusive, and clowning around at 5am House raves: blissful and communicative. "

Solid Steel (13th February) DJ Food - Selected Aphex Works

Unless you've been living under a rock recently you'll have heard the news that Aphex Twin unexpectedly uploaded 155 of his old and unreleased tracks to Soundcloud and made them downloadable for free. Starting from his earliest demos through to known live tracks, later jungle experiments and beyond, this is the motherlode that his fans have always wanted. DJ Food, a long-time Aphex fan, has been through the entire collection with a fine-toothed comb and selected his favourites for the first half of the show this week. The hit rate was high but he's has managed to cram 31 tracks into 85 minutes to mark this unique occasion and peppered the mix with vintage interview clips of Richard James talking about his music.

In hour 2 we welcome ghetto house royalty with a mix from the legendary Parris Mitchell to celebrate the release of the second Dance Mania compilation on Strut. Coming out of Chicago, the music had a raw, stripped back feel to it and Parris Mitchell was right in the middle of it with a string of releases throughout the 90's. He also recorded as Pleasure Inc. Rhythm II Rhythm and Victor Romeo and drops a mix with one of his own Dance Mania tracks alongside those by Paul Johnson, Eric Martin and Robert Armani, plus more classic pieces by Cajmere, Green Velvet and Manuel Goettching, as well as more recent cuts by Joachim Spieth and Floorplan.

Solpara is our guest in Hour 2 and the New York producer has recently released his debut solo EP ‘Swing‘ on Nicolas Jaar’s label Other People . Opening with Jo Johnson, his mix then weaves through music from Radial, Jaures, Future Sound of London, Nitzer Ebb, Drala and Arabie 82' from the Montreal based Booma Collective that Solpara co-founded. He told us;
“I’ve been grooving to these tracks this past month of January. Some are recent discoveries shared by friends, and others are some good oldies”

Solid Steel (27th February) In Hour 1 it's the turn of Palms Trax to grace the decks and the recent RBMA graduate drops a mix of quality House and Techno spanning the last 25 years, featuring recent cuts from Beatrice Dillon, Josh Milan and Mighty Thor, plus vintage selections from After Hours, Hard Drive and Stasis. He had this to say;
"Mixed in the Berlin Community Radio studio really late on a Sunday, it includes a few records that would feel at right home on my show and a few others I've been enjoying playing out recently. It's a good measure of what I'm into at the moment. Thanks to JM Moser, PLO Man and Tama Sumo for the (constant) inspiration." His new EP 'In Gold' is out on Dekmantel in March.

Next up in the Record Store Residency slot is Rise Records from Bristol, with a beautifully crafted mix by Situation spanning the genres. They told us;
‘‘This was mixed in three frenetic eye-straining sessions, after hours in my studio at home. It was fun but challenging to tie together the choices from 10 or 12 people (staff members) into a cohesive listening experience! As a store, Rise has a pretty broad range of music, genre-wise, and couple that with many of the staff members producing and releasing their own material, it made for a really interesting combination of sounds, and some pretty leftfield transitions. Hopefully people like it!’’

Paulo W works at Rise and is part of Situation Sounds, a collective of DJs, producers, editors and musicians, based in the Southwest. They are the founders of the label Situation, Situationism and have recently released an album called ‘’It's A Beautiful Life’’ on Our Records.

Solid Steel (6th March) 'Straight ahead high octane beating Techno' is how L.I.E.S. label boss Ron Morelli describes his mix for Solid Steel and who are we to argue. The founder of Long Island Electrical Systems will be celebrating it's 5th anniversary this year and the New York based label continues to release an uncompromising catalogue of music from Delroy Edwards, Legowelt, Beau Wanzer, Dan Physics and his own project Two Dogs in a House. Expect music from Plastikman, Svreca, Sleeparchive and Paula Temple remixed by Perc. You can catch Ron Morelli at Suicide Circus in Berlin this weekend and he will be heading to BLOC on the 13th March.

Solid Steel (13th March) We welcome back Portico to Solid Steel having previously been guests in 2012. They are celebrating the release of their new album 'Living Fields' which is out on March 30th and their mix includes the title track featuring Jono Mcleery and '101' featuring Joe Neman from Alt J . They had this to say;

Solid Steel (20th March) Having released debut album Sleep back in 2013 on Brighton based ‘Wolf Music’ Medlar steps up to the Solid Steel plate with a mix of 100% unreleased & exclusive tracks. He tells us this mix is constructed from 'Some unused tracks and distractions from the last 5 years, excerpts of interviews with some of the artists who've inspired me, and field recordings from some places I've travelled since music became my job.’ The result is an hour (and then some) of sublime, soulful funk and house grooves. Look out for new forthcoming releases on the aforementioned Wolf, as well as a collaborative release on 'Delusions Of Grandeur’, and remixes for Andreya Triana and  the Mr Bongo label.
