Orquesta Narvaez 

Originally from Puerto Rico, this was band that represented the sound of the 70’s in New York. With an emphasis on heavy trombone lines they were probably a precursor to the term “salsa dura” that is used to describe their style of music today. Led by vocalist Armando Vasquez, the band had some success with their first and only vinyl recording Reincarnation on the Tico label in 1975.

The song La Mafia has a sound reminiscent of Willie Colon’s legendary style of arrangement. Even the lead vocals sound a bit like early Hector LaVoe but on some of the other tracks the band evolves into their own unique sound. 

For collectors of “salsa classica” this is a very hard to find gem on vinyl that is a bit on the pricey side but worth it. Rumor has it that the band is back in the studio working on a recording that is due out in spring of 2012.

I will have it on my wish list and when we get it here at “NewGenSalsa” a review is sure to follow.
