Rampant anti-immigrant narratives in American culture have made difficult the work of advocacy for meaningful, systemic change in immigration. The Butterfly Lab at Race Forward was launched in 2020 as a place to construct effective narratives that honor the humanity of migrants, refugees, and immigrants. This work of narrative strategy and intervention is given a data-informed backing with researchers who use data, research, and technology to help identify target audiences, the media they are currently consuming, and how (or if) they can be moved. Dismantling structural racism in America’s healthcare systems requires activating people in the U.S. toward a future of health equity, work that is rooted in narrative and culture change. The culmination of our year-long project with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) in pursuit of this goal was storytelling. Using the foundation of our audience-narrative architecture, we partnered with Story Strategy Group to generate story hypotheses with experts and creative strategists who would make real media that we could test for audience effects. The full results of our findings are available in this public report, and in this conversation, our Science Director Riki Conrey sat down with Story Strategy Group principal and co-founder Liz Manne to talk through all things creative within narrative strategy.
