This is such an exciting project for me to share. During these crazy times creativity is still flowing therefore I am so happy and proud to share this amazing piano project ft. Jeroen van Vliet and Maarten Vos. My harp improvisations changed into sheet music and Jeroen transformed the written note-scores in his home-studio and made the music his own. Ambient and reflective. Then I selected two piano tracks that I transferred to Maarten, he gave my composition edge and just enough discomfort to balance the dreamy piano. Beautiful sonic landscapes appeared.. Harriet van Reek illustrated a fantastic place where one can wander, escape and dream; an imaginary landscape that truly complements the story.

I am a Dreamer

EK IS EIK, the debut Big Round Records release for critically acclaimed Dutch composer and harpist Anne Vanschothorst, features works for contemporary classical harp with a distinctly jazz twist. By way of solo harp pairing with instruments such as the trumpet, viola da gamba, percussion, and bass, Vanschothorst's music mirrors her passion for experimentation and eclecticism. EK IS EIK takes listeners on a journey of thoughts and memories, and appeals to the profound within the listeners: imagination, emotion, truth, and beauty. The album features trumpeter Saskia Laroo, gambist Ernst Stolz, bassist Bob van Luijt, and percussionist Arthur Bont alongside the composer herself. Vanschothorst says regarding her collaborators, "These musicians have great amounts of musical whimsy; I can give a certain idea or guideline, but they are still going their own way in the composition or improvisation." Recorded in her home studio, the harp was recorded separately with the rest of the instruments being overdubbed, giving each artist the opportunity to create their own musical narrative while reacting to Vanschothorst's harp.

A Bird Came Flying composition arised during improvisation with the Bird Sermon of Francisc of Assisi in a church in my home town The Hague in 2007. This piece received an overwhelmingly great response, especially by artist, film makers who wanted to license the piece for their project. Then it hit me : i want to be a producer of original music. So i became a landscape music composer for HSM (harp and soul music) and 10 years later i still have the best job ever ! .. with music &love -XA

How my cloud rider took lady Ferrus as it were .. i am on continuously on a sound search, a longing to find that beautiful and touching voice .. and i found out about Diana Ferrus through Ingrid Jonker on youtube. Every once and a while i watch the Ingrid Jonker documentary Korreltjie niks is my dood and in the recommendations was a poetry video about Saartje Baartman mentioned recited by Diana Ferrus. So i started following Diana on twitter and facebook. And yesterday i was called as it were to search on soundcloud for her voice. Because i wanted to see if there would be a hq recording of one of Diana's poems. And there it was "Letters", such a heartfelt and profound poem. I recognized my music, my sound-story - harPoem - about the Cloudrider in the poem. It matched perfectly, i did not have to change my music or the poetry to make it work. How wondrous!

About the Cloudrider

It all began with Museum Boijmans van Beuningen asking me to make music for a sound installation inspired by Lyrisches by Kandinsky.

What strikes me in this picture (lyrisches by Wassily Kandinsky) are the blue and red of the clouds and self-sure posture of the green rider and the movement of the horse's manes .. drawn in just a few lines with an amazing drive and passion. The colors and the seemingly simple playful way of painting give a sense of urgency. I have the feeling that the rider wants to rise above the earthly and maybe he wants to jump out of the actual painting in due time. - I wanted to capture this idea of escape in music. It begins with a run-up, the movement of my harp sounds become faster and faster – just like a rider who wants to jump, then holds his breath for a split second and takes the plunge. The rider is transcending – he is in the clouds, the time stands still, a dream come true .. the rider is one with his horse, at full gallop and freedom of movement they ride through the clouds to flee reality. After the jump one can hear a slightly dissonant harp sound that gives room and relief to end up in a meditation. How I wish this bliss could be never-ending. This melancholia suits me and touches me to the core. This amen or resolution is clearly my perception. My emotional life. As a musician I love to become one with the music. Such a tremendous joy to be in my world of harp and soul, a wonderful world of beauty and consolation. The dreamy and esoteric are to me an escape – like a painter who steps into his painting and disappears – that is how Kandinsky's rider could jump into infinity – he has become one with my last sounding harp tone.

De Nederlandse harpist Anne Vanschothorst heeft een selectie uit de mooiste poëzie van de gerenommeerde en Nobelprijs-waardige Zuid-Afrikaanse dichter Antjie Krog in samenzang met harpmuziek op cd uitgebracht voor 'Harp and Soul Productions'. Op de wereldpremière 'klip lied snaar' zijn de dichter en de harpist voor het eerst samen te beluisteren. Zij hebben hun krachten gebundeld.

Over 'klip lied snaar' vertelt Anne: "Met de volgorde van de intuïtief gekozen gedichten van Antjie Krog, gebundeld in 'klip lied snaar', heb ik mijn eigen verhaal willen vertellen. Haar poëzie appelleert aan de wens die ik als mens/kunstenaar/maker/vrouw heb - in mijn streven naar evenwicht, vrijheid, geluk en (onvoorwaardelijke) liefde - om openhartig, onbevangen en met kinderlijke nieuwsgierigheid/creativiteit in het leven te staan, zonder schuldgevoel en angst. Het gaat over het verlangen naar aanraking en connectie, de behoefte om ergens bij te horen, te weten waar je vandaan komt, dat je wordt gezien, gehoord en genoemd. Het gaat wat mij betreft over bestaansrecht."

Anne Vanschothorst is maker van toegepaste muziek voor spoken word en filmprojecten en is o.a. te horen geweest via NPO, PBS het NFF, TROPFEST, Discovery Channel, Gucci, Museum Boijmans en Studio Drift. Het All About Jazz magazine schrijft: 'There is a stunning soundtrack quality to Anne Vanschothorst's music, but that should be no surprise as she has been called upon to provide such to the visual arts.' Antjie Krog geldt al vele jaren als een van de groten van de hedendaagse literatuur. Bij Uitgeverij Podium verschenen haar gedichtenbundels. Als eerste niet-Nederlandse auteur werd haar de Gouden Ganzenveer toegekend. Maar liefst twee keer ontving zij de prestigieuze Hertzogprys. De Volkskrant schrijft: 'Het ligt aan de taal, het ligt aan de toon, het ligt aan de thema's – het ligt, kortom, aan de dichteres.'
