OUT OF TIMBER AND EARTH

WENT OFF TO THE SWEAT LODGE
SMOKED THE BEST SPECIAL TOBACCO
AND SPOKE OF OLDEN TIMES
AND AS WE LAY AND TALKED 
THE MEN IN RED COATS 
CAME OUT OF THE TREES 
STOVE IN THE NEW HOGAN
SHOT US ALL AND LEFT US
DEAD, DYING OR MAIMED

THE HOGANS ARE GONE

Ran a small shebeen
He sold dope to a doctor
Who used to treat the Queen
He had a girlfriend
She was called Christine
She was on the game
It was a very racy scene
She had an ex-lover
Lucky Gordon was his name
He wanted Christine back 
And Johnny was fair game

Lucky caught up with Johnny
One Flamingo night
They got their knives out
There was gonna be a fight
Lucky chased Johnny
All around the place
Johnny cut Lucky
Striped across his face
Lucky told everybody
Johnny was as good as dead
He got a machete
Gonna cut off Johnny’s head

Christine kept a pistol
In her bedside table drawer
One night Johnny took it
As he walked out the door
Wandered Soho With 
A Luger in his waistband
This was protection
From that heavy man
Christine left Johnny
Moved into Wimpole Mews
With Mandy and the doctor
Soon to be the news

Johnny took a taxi
He just had to see her
Christine wasn’t talking
Threw fivers out the window
Johnny lost his rag
Fired shots into the door
Just like in those movies
He saw many times before
When this did not work
He roared off in the cab
Christine called the law
And Nipper made his nab

Profumo lied in Parliament
The Doctor took his life
Christine left the country
Johnny went inside
They put him in a cell
With Frank, the mad axe man
Johnny spent his time
Working out a plan
Doing bird in Dartmoor
Was very hard to bear
Johnny kept his nose clean

Johnny moved to Blackheath
Had some kids along the way
Ducked and dived for many years
Smoked dope on every day
Kept well outside the limelight
As he mooched through London town
Hardly any people knew
He’d brought the Tories down

He sometimes made us cry
Johnny was the man who said
“Gonna stay high till the day I die”
