1. Portret van een Vriendschap



This is an example of a layering technique I developed while studying composition in Utrecht. Like Renaissance painters used to apply layers of paint on top of each other to create a sense of depth, this work layers several field recordings that fade in and out, then places more direct sound marks in the foreground.

2. Geboorte / Berusting / Herfst



This is the intro paired with the 'coming of age'-part from the soundtrack for the movie Ceres. The whole soundtrack, though electronic, was built from acoustic sources. I wrote a hymn, asked a dear friend to sing it, and then used the hymn and the overtones of her voice throughout the soundtrack. We made a silly mistake with the Latin that I hope you won't spot, but the recording is still relevant to the project. In this snippet, all sounds were built using my friend's voice, a singing bowl and a didgeridoo.

3. Via Aquilonis I

A portrait of a city, an originally 23 minutes long work edited down to 3 for this example. Having made field recordings on several journey's over land from Utrecht to Tromsø, this project is a series of compositions, of which this is the first. It deals with my former hometown and favourite sounding Dutch town, Utrecht. The choir heard in the introduction is my own, the work sung is an existing work by Josquin des Prez. All other sounds are from field recordings of Utrecht.

Serenje, capital of the Serenje district. We`re on the market to pick up some groceries, and trying to hitch a ride deeper into the country. The market is a colourful place; Women dressed in bright cloth walk through clouds of dust, thrown up by dark feet in sandals. Most shops are situated in containers, just a few have their own concrete building. Men haggle over prices in Bemba and a little Nyanja. Trucks come and go as the day proceeds, carrying cargo with way to much people on top. The sun shines down in a straight line, casting no shadow.

A1 Korte Smeden

Living in the same spot for months makes you indifferent to the local sounds. Spending a few months in my brothers` first floor apartment, above the she shops in the local mall, we would wake to the sound of the first shoppers on saturdays. This is an hommage to the sounds we got so used to..

A2 Rain

Few sounds are as soothing as that of rain and distant thunder. A shower rushes over the mall, then swells a litte. Thunder mumbles in the distance.

A3 Afterthought: Busking

A busker plays a droning tune on the corner. This recording is filtered, leaving the essential frequencies of his instrument.

A1 Korte Smeden

Wanneer je maanden ergens woont, worden de geluiden die bij die plaats horen steeds minder bijzonder. In de bovenwoning van mijn broer, waar ik in 2008 van april tot september verbleef, keken we vanuit de huiskamer uit op de Diezerstraat, de grootste winkelstraat van Zwolle. Elk weekend diende het winkelend publiek, dat overal om het huis heen liep er als wekker. Deze opname is een ode aan de geluiden waar we zo aan gewend waren.

A2 Lenteregen, Korte Smeden

Er zijn weinig geluiden zo rustgevend als regen en onweer in de verte. Een bui ruist over de Korte Smeden en zwelt een beetje aan als het onweer in de verte voorbij komt.

A3 Nagedachte: Straatmuziek

Een reizende muzikant speelt op een straathoek. Voor de opname is een filter gebruikt dat vrijwel alleen de belangrijke frequenties van zijn instrument overlaat.


Field Recording Set #1 - Korte Smeden (A) (Netherlands)

Ulva Island is a small, uninhabited island in one of Stewart Island`s many bays and inlets. The island is a reserve, but open to the public. It`s only accessible by boat. On the island we find a choir of birds and sea on top of a thick silence. This soothing soundscape is pierced only once, by a small airplane across the water taking off and adding it`s own flavour.
