As is often the way with artists who hail from the chilly climes of northern Europe, Skatebard deals in a cosmic brand of disco. Usually coloured with elements of Detroit house and neo-Italo, his sound has given rise to hugely sought after mini-albums—such as 2002’s recently re-released Skateboarding Was A Crime (In 1989)—as well as plenty of functional yet emotive 12”s. Next to his own Digitalo Enterprises label, he has worked on the likes of Sex Tags Mania and Full Pupp, has produced with DJ Sotofett and is no stranger to a sense of fun when it comes to DJing. 

Midway through December last year he played, as he does regularly, at Fettschmelze in Karlsruhe. More than three hours of the set was recorded and is presented here as a fine overview of Skatebard’s broad skills as a selector. From carefree, key-laced disco to cosmic curveballs via sleek and futuristic house, it is a freewheeling mix that manages to glide effortlessly between sounds and scenes.

“This EP was made after I realised that what inspired me most was to combine my love of electronic music with the music I enjoy outside of the club. I decided to collaborate with friends from a couple of my favourite bands, including Fay Milton (Savages) who provides live drums on Motorik Bush Doof Musik and Taigen Kawabe (Bo Ningen) who performs on I Never Cared That Much For Jungle. For me, having live instrumentation on the EP adds an extra depth to the tracks & has given me a vision of how to I’d like future releases to sound.
My fave track off the EP, Growing Up With Muscle Cars, is an homage to my step dad who repairs and restores old muscle cars. He also used to take me to the drags in my hometown when I was little. We would push the race cars out onto the track. Some of my favourite memz as a lil kid.”

I’m usually not much of a preplanned mix person, I massively prefer playing to a crowd and interacting with the atmosphere. Combine that with the extremely not insignificant fact that this is one of the most important and longest running mix series around, this was quite a challenge!

I spent a long time gathering these 40 songs and playing with the arrangement (even made a couple new edits). I included songs that have been staples in my sets, plus old favorites from before I was a DJ. Eternal shouts to Nathan Micay, Aurora Halal, Overmono, E-Talking and Koehler for letting me include your dope as hell unreleased new music (plus two unreleased songs from myself). 

The last song is by Oakland band Them Are Us Too and this mix is dedicated to those who lost their lives in a diy music space a year and a half ago. Your music and love lives on. FUCK technocrat capitalist greed in the bay. One of Ghost Ship’s spiritual predecessors, Ghost Town in Oakland, was one of the first gigs I ever played, back in 2011 right around the time when I was realizing that I loved making music and DJing. 

If someone told me then that I’d eventually make an Essential Mix and be touring around the world, I’d be incredulously curious to see just how that would unfold. It’s been wild. Thank you to everyone who has listened and danced with me since then.

Today Maribou State announce 'Nervous Tics (DJ Tennis Remix)’ - the latest in a series of remixes to come from their new album “Kingdoms In Colour”, released on 7th September on Counter Records. Following a recent remix from Maceo Plex, and ahead of a forthcoming remix from Adesse Versions, DJ Tennis (founder of the Life and Death record label) takes on album highlight ‘Nervous Tics’ featuring Holly Walker on vocals with his classic touch, preserving the warmth and fragility of the original but rebuilds the track on a sleek, muscular 4/4 foundation.

As well as their upcoming Roundhouse live-show the newly formed five piece have now sold out all of their upcoming dates in 2018, and recently announced a headline show at London’s Brixton Academy on 7th March 2019 which sold over 60% of tickets in one week, as well as their first live tour of the US and further EU tour dates in 2019.

"Kingdoms In Colour” is Maribou State’s first full-length since 2015’s breakthrough debut album “Portraits”. The record entered the UK album charts at #25 and features singles ‘Feel Good’ - a collaboration born of their friendship with Houston-based trio Khruangbin; ‘Turnmills’ - aimed at raising awareness for the The Night Time Industries Association's #SaveNightlife campaign to protect the UK’s most vulnerable music venues from closure; and continues their long standing relationship with Holly Walker (vocalist on fan favourites ‘Steal’ and ‘Midas’) on ’Nervous Tics’ which is currently on the 6 Music A list.

Beginning life in 2011 as a project between Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, Maribou State had released a string of EP’s and singles before the arrival of debut album “Portraits” propelled them to the world stage. Spawning a live show that took them around the globe and included standout festival performances at Glastonbury, Bestival, a headline slot at Sonar by Day and Secret Garden Party; a 32-date European tour plus dates throughout Asia, Australia and America. They received radio support from the likes of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and Gilles Peterson, multiple additions to the BBC 6 Music A-list, a 5-show BBC Radio 1 Residency, a slot on the legendary BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and performed a session Live from Maida Vale. Critical support came from the likes of The Guardian, i-D magazine and Vogue, with the album amassing over 80 million streams to date and drawing comparisons to acts such as The xx, James Blake & Mount Kimbie, as well earning them plaudits from the likes of DJ Koze and Bonobo.

Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe have been releasing as PBR Streetgang for very close to a decade, and DJing together for rather longer than that. Since they met on the never-ending cavalcade of the party scene in their hometown of Leeds, the duo have been focused on dance music's core values – which has led to a succession of beautiful, genre-agnostic 12” releases on some of the best labels in the world: Crosstown Rebels, Futureboogie, Hot Creations, Throne Of Blood, 20:20 Vision.

Australian born, London based DJ and producer HAAi gets tapped to supply her eclectic electronic excursion 'Drumting' to DGTL Records' first Various Artists EP. 

HAAi has risen rapidly during the past few years, with a standout set in Mixmag's The Lab LDN and most recently winning the title of the BBC’s ‘Most Essential Mix of 2018’. She's become widely known for her unique approach to DJing, fusing a globally-influenced blend of electronic and acoustic elements, but now as she expands her catalogue of original material we're given a much deeper look into her sonic persona. 

The 'Various Artists Volume 1' EP, which also includes tracks by  Rebolledo and Paulor, Axel Boman and JP Enfant, is set for release April 12.

Premiere: HAAi 'Drumting'

Today we’re all super hyped for for Lente Kabinet this weekend so to get us even more excited we’ve got Job Jobse making his entry to the series. He will play a closing set at the festival and as resident at De School is a master for serving up the perfect record at the perfect time. Initially a slow burner, he’s long been loved by Amsterdam locals for his richly melodic take on house, techno, Italo and disco, and himself is happy to call it trance. 

It’s certainly a spell being and emotional style that characterises his work here. With something of an old school slant, there are stiff vocal cuts and robotic grooves that slowly loosen up and turn to more hands in the air and zoned out fair before getting more sci-fi and occult later on. As ever with Jobse, it’s feel good and fun without being obvious.

10 Everything But The Girl - I Miss You Like The Deserts Miss the Rain

“Resonant Body”, the third studio album by Octo Octa (Maya Bouldry-Morrison), is her most spiritual and nature--connected work. Maya recorded the songs at her cabin in New Hampshire inorder to channel the resonance of the forest, the beauty of the river, and the energy from the rituals she conducts within it. The album was written and produced at the end of December 2018—after a year of near constant touring—in order to process through art an intense and magical year of change. 

“Resonant Body” is the second release on T4T LUV NRG, the label co-run by Maya and her partner Eris Drew. It draws on the same themes of togetherness (“Power To The People”), embodiment (“Spin Girl, Let’s Activate!”), love (“Deep Connections”), healing (“My Body Is Power”) and survival (“Can You See Me?”) that animated her acclaimed “For Lover’s EP” (Technicolour, 2019). The album’s art was created by Maya’s partner Brooke, who painted two canvases after a magical day-trip Brooke, Eris, and Maya took earlier this year on the “Sweet Trail” in New Hampshire. 

Octo Octa’s live performances and DJ sets are known for calling the dancers to move their bodies to a message of love. The dancefloor can be for all of us. It is a communal space that can provide healing when respected, where the dancers can actualize if they can let go and embrace themselves and each other. When we engage with music that heals, through dance or deep listening, we use an ancient technology for its original purpose. Octo Octa believes in the healing power of her music. “Resonant Body” transforms her life and intentions into healing art. 

50% of the profits from the album will be donated to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP), which works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence.
