Palantir’s move from hunting terrorists to parsing global trade isn’t accidental. Their entire business model depends on absorbing vast data flows—tracking, modeling, predicting behavior. Feeding the insatiable hunger of governments and law enforcement.

Today’s announcement offers Palantir something subtler yet crucial: corporate risk data.

Picture this. Suppose thousands of smaller companies—from emerging fintechs to struggling NGOs—pipe detailed financial and transactional data through Foundry to better predict trade conflicts or sanctions blowback. Over years, this treasure trove feeds Palantir’s models, growing sharper, deeper, more predictive.

Who benefits?

Not the scrappy nonprofits and startups, who pay for the privilege of letting Palantir quietly refine its all-seeing algorithms. Perhaps not even Hence itself, framed as a disruptor but tethered to a platform whose real business pays vastly better elsewhere—in surveillance, intelligence, and military contracts.

Beneficiaries are deeper and far more strategic. Consider the Pentagon, CIA, or Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. Imagine the sophistication their tools gain with direct backend access to private-sector risk calculations.

This isn’t hypothetical. Palantir’s SEC filings openly mention “public-private data partnerships.” Their business, hiding in plain sight, blurs lines between corporate intelligence and state surveillance. Every startup plugged into Foundry becomes another tributary feeding the surveillance-industrial complex.

Global South businesses and NGOs adopting Hence will inevitably rely on analysis built almost entirely from English-language Western sources. Analysts trained at McKinsey or Eurasia could at least compensate for source-bias through their own networks and regional expertise. A purely algorithmic approach, locked inside Palantir’s system, surrenders this last human check.

What we’re unraveling here isn’t just corporate data privacy—it’s data colonialism. By exporting American-centric analytics methodologies—quietly standardizing how global risks are framed and interpreted—Hence’s product shapes decision-making far beyond U.S. shores.

Firms like Hence become mere data feeders, seduced into complicity under promises of cheap, democratized insight.

Palantir hasn’t democratized geopolitical intelligence. It privatized surveillance—and today, through a glossy partnership with Hence Global, placed it directly into the bloodstream of small and unsuspecting companies worldwide.

On April 24th, at a closed-door gathering in Oklahoma City, representatives from AI giants like Anthropic and Google sat side-by-side with top executives from fossil fuel powerhouses such as Venture Global. Hosted by the Hamm Institute, a think tank funded by fracking billionaire Harold Hamm, the summit had one clear question: How can America power its AI revolution?

Their answer surprised many: an immediate and dramatic expansion of natural gas infrastructure. Advocates at the summit argued unequivocally that the sheer computational demands of AI—demands that have tripled over just the past three years—cannot yet be satisfied by renewable energy alone. Last week, as you went about your day, living your life, something unprecedented was quietly happening behind closed doors at Meta. Thousands of workers learned they were being let go—engineers, analysts, product managers—all swept away in another round of brutal layoffs. But at the very same time, Meta was frantically writing checks—millions of dollars, unheard of sums—not to rehire, not to bring employees back, but to poach a handful of elite AI researchers.

It sounds surreal, doesn't it? A company downsizing thousands of people while simultaneously showering tens of millions to entice maybe just one or two individuals. On one hand, Meta quietly increases the number of employees rated as "below expectations," a convenient justification to remove teams wholesale. On the other, CEO Mark Zuckerberg flies prominent AI figures for exclusive meetings at Lake Tahoe mansions, dangling offers upwards of 20 million dollars per researcher.

This isn't just another cost-cutting move or a reorganizing of company priorities. It signals something deeper and far more unsettling: a profound power shift in the technology industry. AI isn't just changing routine tasks; it's rewriting the rules of labor itself, creating a ruthless economy—one where just a tiny handful of so-called 10,000x individuals dominate, and nearly everyone else becomes suddenly, painfully expendable.

In fact, one Meta engineer, now laid off, put it in haunting terms: "They're paying twenty million for the guys who'll build the AI that fires the rest of us." 

Let that sink in for a moment.

There are echoes of desperation in Meta's actions. Last year alone, the company lost nearly five percent of its AI talent to rival companies. It’s not hard to see why: the global pool of engineers qualified to build the most advanced AI models is incredibly small—estimated at fewer than a thousand worldwide. Navin Rao, a leading executive at Databricks, compares it to the scarcity of NBA stars. When the talent market is so tight, companies fight relentlessly with their wallets.

But to grasp the stakes here, we have to understand something else: the "Nvidia tax." Meta is currently pouring billions into expensive GPUs to train its speech, language, and "superintelligence" algorithms. Each individual Nvidia GPU costs about $35,000 dollars; Meta bought more than a million of them this year alone. To afford this, Meta slashes its ranks of mid-career engineers, saving billions just to deploy it all again into hardware infrastructure and elite talent salaries. Those who remain face an AI relentlessly automating their roles, effectively crafting a cruel cycle of self-inflicted obsolescence.

Maybe what we're witnessing right now—Meta’s multimillion-dollar talent poaching spree—is just the beginning of something much bigger. We might soon see the market inflate even further, with top researchers commanding unprecedented salaries, creating insurmountable gaps between the elite and everyone else. We could also anticipate radical shifts within corporate governance—imagine, boards increasingly delegating pivotal decisions not just to executives like Zuckerberg, but to their latest AI creations.

Just how much will top-level AI talent cost by 2027, or in a decade? How many thousands more will quietly be displaced, lost beneath headlines of brilliance, innovation, and efficiency?

In the meantime, one thing remains heartbreakingly clear: the painful human costs remain invisible, overshadowed by lavish bids for AI's brightest stars.

In recent years, we've grown accustomed to AI models becoming bigger, more expensive, and increasingly reliant on massive cloud infrastructures. Training a state-of-the-art model often requires millions of energy-intensive GPU-hours, typically housed in colossal data centers. It's a story we've accepted: powerful AI needs powerful machines.

But a curious recent development just might flip that narrative on its head.

Yesterday, Multiverse Computing announced they've secured $215 million in funding to deploy their revolutionary model compression technology—CompactifAI. This quantum-inspired tool promises to shrink the size of large language models by up to 95%. We've seen compression techniques before—pruning, quantization—each with tradeoffs in accuracy. But CompactifAI claims an unprecedented achievement: near-full performance, fraction of the size.

And what's truly remarkable isn't just what's happening at Multiverse Computing—it's how they're doing it. By drawing inspiration from quantum physics and their patented tensor-network method, they're enabling massive AI models like Meta's Llama-3 to fit comfortably on a device as humble as a smartphone or even a Raspberry Pi.

To appreciate what this means, let's step back a moment. Historically, big AI models have locked power exclusively in the hands of cloud giants—players like Amazon, Google, Microsoft—who could afford enormous investments into specialized hardware. But if any app developer with a phone can now deploy powerful language models locally, we're looking at more than a technical convenience—it's a potential seismic shift.

For Multiverse's CEO Enrique Lizaso Olmos, the vision is clear. He says, "We're not just compressing models—we're compressing the entire economics of AI." Investors such as Bullhound Capital, famous for backing Spotify and Revolut, seem to agree. Giants like Hewlett-Packard and Toshiba are also in, undeniably excited about bypassing cloud services and democratizing on-device artificial intelligence.

But every revolution comes with unintended consequences. AI running unchecked on millions of individual devices is much harder to regulate, monitor, and control. Recent studies have cautioned that extremely compressed AI models can amplify biases and risks, not reduce them. Others worry about privacy and weaponization: could small, high-performance models in the palms of our hands turbocharge disinformation, surveillance, or misuse by authoritarian regimes?

There's also, intriguingly, the environmental dimension. While smaller models consume significantly less energy per inference, critics warn that making AI models cheaper, easier, and more accessible could paradoxically lead to an explosion of their overall use. Will CompactifAI help us reach sustainability goals set forth in the EU's recent AI Act—or accidentally propel even higher cumulative energy consumption?

Multiverse Computing finds itself balancing these competing narratives—powerful decentralization versus loss of oversight, sustainability versus proliferation, democratization versus risk.
