where to begin. this is a song about brexit and labour and class and frustration and helplessness and the world going mad in the aftermath of bowie's death. more specifically, it's an attempt to articulate the sheer emptiness felt as successive decisions were taken by my home nation, politically, culturally, and morally, that i couldn't recognise nor relate to. brexit, boris, you know what i mean.

it is a song that i filled with my loneliness and sorrow. but because i am a coward i chose not to sing it myself, but to fashion the words into the mouths of distorted robots. i dunno, it just clicked with me. 

the loss of self i felt back then was crushing. i'm still not over it. but i write music to express the things that i lack language for, and that is what this is. an expression of the words and feelings and rage and impotence of the weird, weird post-brexit shitshow we found ourselves living in.

Sock Drawer Announce New Single “Fishes” — A Lo-Fi Hymn to Mortality, Memory, and Everyday Magic

Brighton-based indie-electronic duo Sock Drawer return with “Fishes,” the deeply personal new single taken from their forthcoming debut album. Blending ambient electronics, warped tape loops, and dreamy psychedelia, the track captures the band at their most intimate and introspective.

“Fishes” was the very first song Sock Drawer ever wrote together. Michael Baker (Roman Joon) first saw Ebony Grace perform at a gig on Brighton seafront; the very next day, over Ebony’s first-ever Bloody Mary, they sat down to write. The entire track emerged in a single sitting, recorded on a microphone wrapped in cardboard to achieve its distinctive, ethereal texture.

Over the two years spent crafting their debut album, the pair revisited and reworked “Fishes” in countless forms, but ultimately realised the magic lived in the raw immediacy of that early demo. The final version preserves that feeling, with Michael and Ebony recording the vocals live together in the same room, capturing the fragile, unfiltered emotion at the heart of the song.

Lyrically, “Fishes” explores mortality, memory, and the fleeting beauty of everyday life — “death, love, and washing the dishes,” as the band describe it. It has become their set closer, often performed unplugged, where it consistently elicits overwhelming response from audiences. For Sock Drawer, it remains one of the most meaningful pieces they’ve written.

“We wrote ‘Fishes’ the day after we met at a gig on Brighton seafront. To this day it’s one of our favourite songs we’ve ever written, and we still don’t know how it happened. It was written in one sitting, recorded with a mic wrapped in cardboard, and sung live in the same room. We usually play it unplugged at the end of gigs, and the reaction is always overwhelming. The release follows a breakthrough year for the duo. Known for their euphoric, unpredictable live shows, Sock Drawer blend hypnotic electronics with warm, lo-fi nostalgia. Their soundscape of ambient textures, nostalgic samples, and glitched guitars will appeal to fans of Tame Impala, The xx, Sylvan Esso, and left-field dream-pop.

In 2024, the band headlined the Hive Stage at Glastonbury and earned support from BBC Radio 6 Music, with Lauren Laverne spinning their single “Bored.”

With “Fishes,” Sock Drawer offer their most vulnerable and transportive work yet — a surreal, shimmering meditation on the moments that slip through our fingers, and the ones that stay with us forever.

i was in brussels during the pandemic and after 7 years away from my family, i suffered a quiet breakdown. nothing flashy, just a constant sadness. i was also midway through my phd so thought, why not kill two birds with one stone and get the feels out into audio whilst completing the major work requirement of my research

so yeah, it's a pandemic album, but not the one you might expect
