In "The Smart Enough City," Ben Green warns against seeing the city only through the lens of technology; taking an exclusively technical view of urban life will lead to cities that appear smart but under the surface are rife with injustice and inequality. He proposes instead that cities strive to be “smart enough”: to embrace technology as a powerful tool when used in conjunction with other forms of social change—but not to value technology as an end in itself.

On Tuesday, October 29th, Green joined the Ash Center for a discussion of his new book. Kathy Pham, Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at HKS, served as a respondent. Stephen Goldsmith, the Director of the Ash Center's Government Innovations Program, moderated.

When China started promoting its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013, Europe was always going to be a key destination for both the "Belt" and the "Maritime Road" with an open goal of targeting the European consumer market. While Beijing has tried to promote its initiative across Europe, the BRI concept remains unclear to a lot of Europeans. In addition, it has been hard to differentiate between Chinese foreign direct investments (with a total amount of EUR 17.3 billion in 2018, mainly in the UK, Germany and France) and BRI-related projects, which have been scarce in the European Union - although the situation is quite different in the Balkans just outside the EU. Meanwhile, the EU has launched its own connectivity strategy, which makes Chinese objectives of offering to build infrastructures to European countries ever more challenging.

On Tuesday, October 8, Philippe Le Corre, Research Associate, Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation and Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, led a discussion about the impact and perceptions of the BRI in Europe. While public management has become widely spoken of, its identity and character are not well-defined. Such disparity is an underlying problem in developing public management within academia and in the eyes of practitioners. In his new book, "Public Management as a Design-Oriented, Professional, Discipline,” Michael Barzelay tackles the challenge of making public management into a true professional discipline.

On Tuesday, October 15th, Barzelay, a Professor of Public Management at the London School of Economics, presented his new book at the Ash Center. He was joined by Hannah Riley Bowles, Roy E. Larsen Senior Lecturer in Public Policy and Management at Harvard Kennedy School.

Public Management as a Design-Oriented, Professional, Discipline | AshCast

Six years ago, the Transparency for Development (T4D) project sought to uncover new and unique evidence on the role of community-led transparency and accountability in improving health outcomes – and how and why we see mixed evidence when these interventions are implemented in the real world.  Based on large-scale mixed methods research utilizing quantitative and qualitative approaches in two countries (Indonesia and Tanzania) and small innovative pilots in three additional countries (Ghana, Malawi, and Sierra Leone), the project now has a lot more information about how these popular approaches to citizen engagement and participation work – and ways in which they can fail to reach their goals. 

On Wednesday, September 25th the T4D team shared results – including the good, the bad, and the unclear – from this one-of-a-kind research project and discussed what is needed next in the field.

Political Brands, the new book from Ciara (Chara) Torres-Spelliscy, is a unique exploration of the legal framework for the use of commercial branding and advertising techniques in presidential political campaigns, as well as the impact of politics on commercial brands.

On October 30, the Ash Center hosted Spelliscy, a Professor of Law at Stetson University, for a discussion of her latest book. The talk was moderated by Miles Rapoport, Senior Practice Fellow in American Democracy at the Ash Center.
