Nobody Like U

Melbourne synth guru Harvey Sutherland follows his latest club single "Nobody Like U" with a massive reworking of "Hummingbird" from Australian wunderkind IsGwan. Known for his turbo-charged garage edits being spun globally — his dub of "What’s A Girl To Do" remains a summer festival staple — IsGwan takes the scratchy synth line and flips it into a dominating main room anthem. Already receiving club support from Jamie xx, Girls Don’t Sync, Huxley and more. Big dub alert.

Glenn Underground needs little introduction. Raised on disco classics and freeform jazz on Chicago’s southside and taking cues from deep house pioneers Larry Heard, Ron Hardy and Lil’ Louis, Glenn Underground has built a formidable catalogue of soulful, deep house records for labels such as Casual, Prescription, Peacefrog and his own Strictly Jaz Unit. He turns in a deeply musical rework of Nobody Like U — the Dancer’s Cielo mix — that steadily evolves over its six minute runtime. It takes several harmonic twists and turns, showcasing both Glenn’s skill as a keyboard and bass player and his ear for Mizell-inspired arrangements.

Marli is an Australian producer and DJ based in Paris whose early career output for labels such as ILIO and Unknown To The Unknown has cemented her already as a world-class talent. She draws inspiration from a broad spectrum of club music, and her eclecticism and technical skill as a DJ is winning her fans in her new home on the continent. Her remix of Nobody is a perfect late-night club cut, some heady, bubbling machine music sitting just on the right side of prog. You can take the girl out of Australia…

Nobody Like U (Marli Remix)

Melbourne producer Harvey Sutherland returns with “Cigarette”, the third in his series of stripped-back dancefloor tracks from the prolific synthesizer enthusiast and club DJ. 

Cigarette is smokey, lo-fi machine funk, drawing a lineage between Sutherland’s earlier hardware jams like “Superego” and his enduring obsession with 00s-era minimal techno and microhouse from artists like Akufen, Luomo and Ricardo Villalobos. It bubbles and fizzes along, giving way to some moody synth melodies before falling back into its chopped-up rhythms.

An understated and moody slice of 2-step, “Remember” features an airy but commanding vocal performance from Vicky Farewell. Her lyrics imply a lost lover, but it’s unclear whether the conversation she’s having is real, or imagined. The weightless half-step production lends a dubwise flavour, referencing elements of British “Lovers Rock” reggae with all its requisite nostalgia and romantic complications.

Harvey Sutherland’s latest 12” marks the inaugural release for Clarity Recordings, an imprint established by Sutherland for modern Australian records.

The first new music from the Melbourne producer since last year’s cuts for MCDE, the double A-side Priestess / Bravado features his live trio Bermuda at full tilt, with an ensemble of hand clapping friends. Self-described “lounge room disco burners”, the record summons the groove experiments of Patrick Adams, Bill Laswell and Arthur Russell, while retaining Harvey’s soulful tones and club-ready arrangements.

Priestess evolves slowly, a nine-minute mind dance that ultimately reaches a celestial state. Sutherland’s piano lines bounce off drummer Graeme Pogson’s unwavering four-on-the-floor, while one-man string section Tamil Rogeon travels skyward. Live standout Bravado is played with determined precision, locking into a tough backbeat that only breaks once Sutherland’s warbling lead solo approaches its resonant peak.

“Expectations” is an extended player from minimalist disco outfit Harvey Sutherland and Bermuda. The second release for Sutherland’s own Clarity Recordings brings his Bermuda project into sharp focus - six tracks spanning Harvey’s influences from the West Coast to West End Records. 

Recorded with bandmates Graeme Pogson (drums) and Tamil Rogeon (electric strings), Expectations follows last year’s stomping label debut single “Priestess/Bravado”. 

The EP includes a long-awaited studio version of live favourite “Clarity”, uptempo burner “Coast 2 Coast” and a moment of spiritual introspection with “Spiders”. The title track offers glimmers of the Doobies and the ‘Dan – a sign of things to come from the Melbourne producer and his unique trio.

Like its predecessor, it features Kahlil Memphis on drums. A fractured jungle excursion with moments of thundering energy and an undeniable UK spirit, the track's inspiration is rooted in a visceral hallucination; the feeling of climbing a never-ending staircase, each step drawing you closer to the light. I Can See draws to a close with the fitting together of a beautifully complex puzzle, before a cut to black.

In a world of widening extremes, plastic fills the oceans, an insect apocalypse threatens the delicate balance of natural ecosystems and a million dead fish rise from the depths of the Murray-Darling Basin. Dread and hopelessness come naturally in the face of these overwhelming crises, but optimism still manages to persist. 

Harvey Sutherland’s rolling samba keeps a relentless pace, punctuated with a loping gospel mantra – they say there’s something in the water – delivered by Jace XL, whose past credits include live and studio recordings with Hiatus Kaiyote; backing vocals for Sampa the Great; and ‘Sacrifice’, a 2016 EP with Silent Jay released on Rhythm Section International. 

SOMETHING IN THE WATER is the first single from Harvey Sutherland’s new studio band, which comprises long-time drummer Graeme Pogson, percussionist Phil Binotto and bassist Luke Hodgson. It was recorded and produced at Harvey Sutherland’s velour-lined recording studio that might just come in handy as a survival bunker when the approaching apocalypse hits Melbourne’s inner-northern suburbs.

NEXUS

Harvey Sutherland, the Melbourne-born record producer, keyboard player, club DJ and bandleader, made a name amongst his hometown’s electronic underground with a string of cult dance singles. Early 12-inches like ‘Bermuda’ and ‘Priestess’ were records in love with classic soul and disco, but his debut album ‘Boy’ was guided by his obsessional traits and habits, ending up in a place he describes as “Neurotic Funk”. 

Boy has seen widespread acclaim since its release, with Resident Advisor noting “[his] sense of musicality has always been head and shoulders above his peers...his songs are full-blooded and fleshed-out…” His latest material is an exercise in techno minimalism — laser-focused club jams like ‘Hummingbird’ and ‘Nobody Like U’ set the stage for Harvey’s next chapter. 

His machine grooves are fired through a prism of crate-digging influences, from Todd Rundgren to Basic Channel and back again. His distinctive synthesiser tones have graced remixes and production for Disclosure, Khruangbin, Genesis Owusu and BadBadNotGood. A seasoned performer, he’s taken his live band to Glastonbury, dragged his Juno-60 into Berghain and turned the Melbourne Recital Centre into a full-fledged nightclub.
