'Opening up 2022 on Sous is an exciting new artist from Berlin, Basic Instinct, with his ‘Into The Night’ debut EP.  Part of the Vertere Berlin crew, DJ and producer Uli Hasselmann aka Basic Instinct is something of an enigma. Hugely popular from his exciting explorations of the deeper side of techno and dark disco vibes, very little is known about him aside from his fashion brand with the club and street in mind. Collaborating with Jennifer Cardini, Andhim and most recently Hugo Boss, he is now working closely with Anja on a Schneider merchandise collection.

 Title track ‘Into The Night’ is an elegant and thoughtful meander into the mind of a deeply engaging artist, bass and beats cleverly mound into a hypnotic gelatinous haze. Warm analogue sweeps and tribal drum work keep feet firmly on the floor while vocal ad libs drift in and out and percussive layers intensify the trip. 

‘Energy’ does what it says on the tin. A rich stab-led groove leads the way as a spoken word sample declares “Energy has brought us here!” Finally, ‘Morning Groove’ lightens the mood considerably without losing any of his trademark hypnotics. Loopy and transcendental, this is the perfect showcase for an artist on the ascent, ready to take the jump to the world stage. '

JUNO REVIEW: 'This Berlin tech house hero delivered the brilliant Left Handed album last year on his Arms & Legs imprint which he runs with Nils Ohrmann. It now gets remixed and what a tremendous roll call there is on this one, where do we start? Maybe with the undisputed legends that he tapped first, such as Chicago's Paul Johnson who gives "Bones" that distinct kind of boompty bounce that only a Windy City DJ can. Speaking of which, Chi-town legend Robert Armani is back on the scene it seems and gives "Punch' a jacking hard house remix that calls to mind the sound of classic imprints like Relief Records or Dance Mania. Toronto deep house legend Nick Holder also makes a comeback with his remix of "No One Can Change Me" which is exactly the kind of bittersweet and emotive deepness you always remembered him for. Big shouts to UK legends 808 State and Crazy P who deliver some great renditions too.'
