A broken man paddles across the dark water of Hatchet Lake. He’s hurt, exhausted, and needs a goddam drink after what he’s just endured. Besides the haunting call of the loon, there’s another strange sound echoing off the water. Through the thick fog he can faintly make out the pines along the shoreline. As he gets closer he realizes that the sound he couldn’t place is actually music. The loud, fuzzed-out riffs and thundering drums make him paddle faster until he reaches the sand. The musicians emerge from the woods to offer him a cold drink and warmth by their campfire. As the band blasts into another number, the weary traveller helps himself to another beer, closes his eyes, and lets the sound of Hatchet Lake carry him away.
Hatchet Lake was started in 2015 soon after Craig Eugene Harris(vocals, guitar) left his life on the road to focus on new musical endeavours. He recruited Stephen MacDonald(bass), Andy MacLean(guitar) and Adam Wedgewood(drums) and the band quickly put together a set of raw, raucous, heavy rock n’ roll. A frequency assault on the ears and psyche driven by double guitar attack and a pummeling rhythm section. The band isn’t all about dirty licks and greasy riffs. There’s also plenty of melody, hooks, and great stories being told to tie it all together. Songs that could easily be strummed quietly on an acoustic guitar but being played with against the grain, bull in a China shop attitude and volume. Good comparisons would be Neil Young backed by Red Fang or The E Street band being replaced with “Rated R era” QOTSA.
In June 2017 the band spent a day with Charles Austin at The Echo Chamber in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Armed with some raunchy fuzz pedals and setting aside the “rules of success”, they hammered out the four songs that will become their debut EP. Set to be released in Fall 2017, these recordings truly capture the Hatchet Lake sound. Those who have yet to witness their live show will finally get to hear what this rowdy(yet refined) band is all about.
