As we slowly start to shake off the winter blues, our next podcast series continues with @WrongAssessment, a well respected producer and dj hailing from Italy. With releases on heavyweight labels such as M_REC, Planet Rhythm, Pole Group, MORD and Clergy, he has found himself to be a respected artist within the techno field.  He is the founder of AWRY, a platform to release both his own, as well as other artist's music. This has been based on a common ground of deep, hypnotic and minimalistic Techno and has been coupled with strong aesthetics and imagery.

Born and bred in the suburbs of Stockholm, @lakej(Filip Ström) comes from a background in visual arts and graphic design. After many years in this field and some life changing experiences, he felt the need to move on to a more abstract medium. Already being fascinated by electronic music and techno in particular, the dive into production and hardware came natural. 

With a huge love for details and rhythmic structures his music has evolved into an introspective, futuristic and yet timeless sound. With intricate textures, atmospheres and deep driving rhythms his music invites you to be swept away into hypnotic states, both in comfort of your own listening space as well as on the dance floor. 

After debuting on the scene in 2017 with a full length EP on Adriana Lopez label Grey Report, his output has been steady with tracks for different VA releases and remixes on various labels as well as more recurring releases with 2 full length albums in 2021 on Semantica Records and Edit Select.

This 80-minute live set dynamic and evolving eclectic journey from beginning to end, transporting the listener down many different paths. The performance offers the opportunity to be fully immersed in the story that HD Substance has created.

On the technical side the master explain: 'I've used my live hardware setup comprising three components from Elektron, the Digitakt Sampler, the Analog Rytm Drum Machine and the Analog 4 Synthesizer. All connected to a dusty and old Mackie 1202 vlz mixer and recorded straight on to a DAT recorder. No computer was used in this recording except for the digital recording conversion'.

Luis Rozalén has been into electronic music since almost forever, it was 1981 and he was 11 year old when a 7” from Depeche Mode came into his hands and that fact was pivotal in what was going to happen next. He spent his teenage years in a musically surrounded environment. At some point he got a drum kit as a christmas present when he was 15 and started playing in several bands and projects until he discovered the power of drum machines and synths by the age of 17.

His first electronic output came in the form of synth pop, then evolved into EBM and industrial sounds in the late eighties and after a trip to London in 1990 he discovered the acid house and rave phenomena. Those were the days when some guys from Sheffield started Warp Records and  his ears switched to IDM and Detroit techno via the Biorythm and Retrotechno compilations. Mid nineties, he evolved into what we now call techno, releasing his first track as Hd Substance in Esplendor Geometrico’s label Geometrik Records in 1995. In 1996 his first album ‘Eleven’ saw the light in another cult imprint, Stereophonic Elephant Dance Recordings, as well as a bunch of vinyl Ep’s and the second album in 1998 called ‘Cancer Pop’. 
Then, he was a regular in all local festivals like Sonar, Benicassim or Festimad sharing this touring action with a residence at Soma Experimental Club from 1996 to 2000. In 1993 founded the first Spanish specialized electronic music magazine ‘Undersounds’. The new century started with his project Atlas Records where he teamed up with another producer releasing 10 records that soon came into the hands of the most prominent players of the scene. 

Disenchanted with how things were evolving in the music industry, he started exploring the digital side, releasing four complete albums in several netlabel platforms. Digging deep in the underground and focusing on his residence at Cassette Club in Madrid. 

In 2009 he resurfaced with another full length album called ‘Hardware’, the record somehow reached a Detroit record store and the LP went into the right hands resulting in his first gig in the motor city club The Works in 2010, becoming a regular there, playing live in 2012 at the Movement Festival with his project District 909 alongside Detroit legend Tim Baker. 

Never is too late, and in his 40’s he started travelling the world  playing regularly in Germany, China, Korea, France, Sweden, Finland, Russia, etc. reaching among others impressive clubs as  Berghain or Tresor.

2018 marks his 30 year anniversary in electronic music, keeping him playing techno all over the world, releasing techno in a constant basis, teaching at The Bass Valley, writing techno for Beatburguer.com, Clubbingspain.com, Pole Group or Falling Ethics and releasing other people’s techno in his own label SUBtl.

Born in Warsaw, he was closely associated with the club culture of the capital of Poland for over a dozen years. The heavy sounds extracted from the black plastic discs inspired him to do more, to go a step further and create his music.

He sought inspiration in crowded cities and the correlation of nature with industrialized society. In music, he looks for something that is not obvious and still to discover. He focuses on a rich mixture of dense industrial atmosphere, offbeat sounds and monumental film music elements driven by energetic kicks.

He's had releases on VSK's (@VSK_crs) label CRS ltd (@CRS-ltd), Secret Keywords (@SecretKeywords), and Newrhythmic Records (@NewrhythmicRecords) to name a few and has performances throughout Europe.

Since the mid-1990s, Rich Oddie and Christina Sealey have been creating a unique fusion of techno, industrial, and electro-acoustic music. Using modular and analog synthesizers, software, location recordings and feedback circuits, Oddie and Sealey draw upon the darker tendencies of techno, electro, and dub, and combine these elements with the experimental aesthetics of early industrial music. Orphx has gained an international following as one of the pioneering acts within the European "rhythmic noise" scene and has more recently come to the attention of techno fans through their releases and remix work on Sonic Groove and Semantica.

They have performed in numerous countries around the world, appearing at celebrated venues such as Berghain (Berlin), Mutek (Montreal) and Qwartz (Paris), and sharing the stage with artists such as Alva Noto, Byetone, Laurie Anderson, Legowelt, Marcel Dettmann, Monolake, Pan Sonic and many others. Oddie and Sealey have also collaborated on audio / visual projects and exhibitions related to their musical work. Orphx have released nine albums and numerous singles on vinyl, cd and cassette. Their most recent work further develops a dark hybrid of techno, dub and industrial that has been met with critical acclaim from many of techno's leading DJs.

Reclaim Your City 021 | Kwartz (Madrid)

Kwartz was born in Madrid in 1989, but was in 2011 when he started to produce techno, and since that date he expended many hours in the studio, combining this with a degree in journalism. Since 2011, he published some EP's and tracks in labels such as Shapeless Records, Sonntag Morgen, CRS, Naked Lunch, ATT Series, REZ or Psykoskunk Recordings, and his tracks had been played by artists like Oscar Mulero, Xhin, Exium or Kirk Degiorgio. In the next months Kwartz is going to release his first vynil, that is going to be published in Nheoma (Exium's label), with two originals from Kwartz plus two originals from Exium. 
Kwartz can be described with these words: perseverance, dedication, passion and effort. Very cool projects are going to be published in the next months.
