@norman-nodge occupies a special place in Berlin techno with a sound that is at once forceful, dubby and hypnotic. These days a lawyer by trade, Nodge spent the 90s as a DJ and promoter before becoming a Berghain resident in 2005. Born in East German Leipzig, raised in Brandenburg, Norman got bitten by the techno bug after the wall came down. In 1994 he started to promote several events and launched his career as a DJ. At these parties, he got to know Marcel Fengler and Marcel Dettmann and literally became their mentor for all things techno.

Marcel Dettmann eventually pitched him to Berghain’s management and he returned to DJing and became a resident instantaneously. Since then, he plays Berghain once a month, specialising in the almost forgotten art of warming up at the beginning of a night. In 2005 he also started to produce his own tracks. His maturity proved to be very beneficial in terms of his artistic vision, as he made up his mind about what he likes and what not a long time ago already. Unsurprisingly, his outings on Dettmann’s MDR label, as well as his track “Native Rhythm Electric” for Ostgut Ton left a deep impression with headstrong techno lovers. With his dusty funk, static hiss and the rich thump of his kick drums, he managed to get himself recognised as one of techno’s more unique auteurs.

Norman Nodge cites Detroit techno (Jeff Mills, Rob Hood, 430 West), Chicago House (Relief, Dance Mania) and Techno (Luke Slater, Peacefrog, Mark Broom) as his most essential influences. Hence, it is not surprising that he fuses the old with the new and the soft with the tough when he plays out. “It is my goal as a DJ to make people dance without walking on trodden paths of recent trends. I want to sensitize dancers for unusual sounds, old and new.”

In the early 90s, techno hits Japan. Surprised and intrigued, Takaaki Itoh was impressed with this sound. This unique style of beats revealed the gateway to a world of underground music in Japan, something he had never heard before.
Surprise slowly gave way to addiction when Takaaki Itoh heard the sound of such artists like UR, Derrick May, Axis, Hardfloor, Sven Väth, Harthouse, Warp and Rising High. 
Finding out he just couldn't get enough of it, in 1994 Takaaki Itoh began to organise his own techno parties in Norioka Iwate, having success by providing fantastic line ups.

In 1996, he decided that it was time to start making his own tracks, so he went out, purchased the vital instruments and began producing. 
After sending out 3 finished tracks to various labels, Electracom UK made the first contact with him, and followed to release his first track. This moment was something he will never forget, as for the first time in his life he was able to finally release his own record. 
Then several releases followed and he began to appear in DJ charts and magazines all over the world.

Takaaki Itoh's Japanese style of techno is purely unique, underground and nothing that had been heard before in Europe. 
In a couple of years, he became recognized as the most underground and expected japanese Techno DJ.
Takaaki Itoh has now taken the next step and started his own label Wols, whilst keep playing in great venues wolrdwide.

Over the years, @quelza has made a name for himself, releasing music on labels like Mord, Palinoia, 47 and Hayes Collective, each pushing an unorthodox crystal clarity and cinematic sound design that has become his signature as an artist. Championing layered techno wares laced with a breaksy, IDM-informed touch that packs a punch, the Frenchman keeps on carving out a truly distinctive, shape-shifting universe, switching scopes and angles as he ups the rhythmic pressure.

This maturity is also reflected in his sets, and this podcast is a clear testament of that. He says "I wanted this podcast to be a slow, burning progression of weirdness and solar intensity, gradually building tension not in the speed of the piece but rather in the textural aspect. This is usually how I like to start my sets: by letting the track breathe and evolve before releasing the intensity once the audience and I are acclimatised to the aesthetics and dynamics of the track selection and the venue.”

To relaunch his seminal imprint, Infrastructure New York, David Sumner aka Function presents his new 12", Green EP. Celebrating 27 years of Function releases this year and the label’s 25th anniversary, the label will serve as an outlet for his new material, reissues of out of print classics from Synewave, Sandwell District and Ostgut Ton (and of course, Infrastructure), as well as developing new artists and launching a long awaited Bandcamp page - exploring the annals of nearly three decades of the Function sound.
 
As a member of the Sandwell District collective, Function, from 2007 onward was instrumental in cultivating and ushering in a new sound of dark, cerebral hypnotica - forcing the hand of change in global techno. Green EP serves as a testament to this, further exploring these depths. The EP pays homage to the day when David arrived in Berlin with his green suitcase where his record “Isolation” on Sandwell District was released, hitting the ground running and spring boarding into an incredibly successful career, becoming a stalwart DJ/producer, after years as a struggling artist.
 
Green EP encapsulates the same raw power and hypnotic energy of his genre defining Sandwell District releases Isolation, Anticipation and Variance, updated with a modern flair. Subject f (Function) has clearly transcended, as expressed through the opening track “Initiation” arriving at his “New Designation”. On the b-side Function communicates his divine alignment through the broken beat, etheric “Aeternum (Meridian)”. Finally, Function closes Green EP with a live extraction of “Desire and Memory”, a brooding club stormer in contrast to the more experimental leanings of the original version, which appeared on Rrose’s label Eaux.
 
Next to releasing a new EP and restarting the label, an attached Bandcamp page and label webshop will be launched. These portals will in time see the release of previously out of stock releases as well as re-issues and unreleased Function material, next to new releases by other artists. No doubt fans will be excited!
 
One thing is clear: Function is back on track and more on form than ever!

Portuguese techno buff Cisco Ferreira got his start way back in the late 80s as Space Opera alongside cult electronic figure C.J. Bolland, The brief collaboration set the stage for his own releases, and later those signed off as The Advent, a name he coined for the work he produced shoulder to shoulder with Colin McBean (aka Mr. G). The alliance ended a few years later, but Cisco forged ahead, developing a tenacious brand of techno that has stood the test of time, with more recent LPs distributed by the likes of Tresor, Mord and Klockworks (and a stream of releases published under self-run imprint Kombination Research). The Detroit-aficionado offers tireless, clobbering compositions, scratchy textures, and punishing mechanical rhythms to which Bassiani Podcast 172 is no stranger. This is a veteran studio mix packed with peak-hour frequencies, driving loops and a whole lot of renegade energy, enough to last for many more decades to come.
