From humble beginnings to underground Los Angeles nights to the stages of international destination festivals like Caprices, BPM, Verknipt, and DGTL, Lee Ann's vibrant touch sets decks aflame wherever she goes. With NowNow Records, she guides a platform for like-minded artists, urging spontaneity and open-mindedness through its colloquial translation "soon".

After NowNow's first-ever V/A release, Lee Ann Roberts provides her second release Alter Ego via the imprint NowNow Records. The four-track Ep is nothing short of what you'd expect from Roberts and NowNow - a ravey throwback with interpretations for all hours. Her eponymous A-side is a percussive driver not for the faint of heart. But, equally dominating as it is enigmatic, Alter Ego sets the pace for things to come. Berlin, by way of Australia's Tred provides the Ep's first remix, a high-powered, relentless ode of rave nostalgia. Next, Antwerp underground hero Milo Spykers takes the reigns with the Eps B1. His take sees Alter Ego transform into the galactic territory - extra spacey but equally bold. Finally, Berlin's one and only Lokier puts the icing on the 90s rave-inspired cake with her psychedelic, peak-time stormer of a remix. The HAVEN white label series is back after a year’s break with the fifth instalment of the infamous Sardonic Tonality compilation series - this time with three newcomers to the imprint and one existing label artist visiting the series for the first time.

The A1 kicks off the record with Ōtautahi (Christchurch) local techno legend Keanu Raves - a regular DJ at HAVEN events in their hometown. Booming kicks, rolling percussion, and emotive synth work come together in this perfect dance-floor killer that’s already been making the rounds at Aotearoa warehouse raves and outdoor parties. Following up is Valerie Ace on the A2 with a tripped-out slab of techno weight. Eerie synth textures, creeping vocal whispers and pounding drum rhythms combine in another delight for all club creatures from the promising German producer.

On the flip French production demon Draugr revisits the label again following on from his Nine Nights EP at the end of 2021. Menacing melodies, charging drum work and ominous atmospheres pour out of yet another industrial-tinged mammoth from the Parisian nightmare weaver. Ending the record is the label debut of Berlin-based Puerto Rican heavyweight Xiorro. Off-beat bass, hypnotic percussions, and grungy synth blasts close out the compilation with another certified club weapon.

The Wroclaw-based Rethe, while of relatively young age, has already gathered quite a reputation with his releases for Emmanuel’s ARTS, as well as his own creative outlet Całość - to name but a few. With his release for Kantrasta, he continues to expand his creative boundaries - he successfully merges funky, dynamic techno with lo-fi, dub and even jazz elements.

“Between the Sea and the Sky” is probably the EP’s most straight-forward track:: massive driving beat and fierce percussion combined with Detroit-ish arpeggiated synth makes up for a real club banger.

“Generator” follows the approach - however, this time halfway through the track a breakdown brings in a much welcome dub chord. Luckily, somehow in Rethe’s interpretation the fusion of dub and techno somehow manages not to sound like yet another Basic Channel rip-off.

The titular “Stairwell” takes a very different approach - it opens with a sinister synth line, bringing to mind some of James Ruskin’s more recent output. Yet again, halfway through the track we are surprised with dubby, lofi chords, which provide it with a sense of unexpected warmth.

EP’s last offering comes from none other than the legendary DJ Rolando, with his interpretation of “Staircase”. While being based on multiple elements of Rethe’s original track, the accents definitely shift. You can hear that Rolando’s roots lie in Detroit, as his remix blends the boundaries between house and techno and sounds... moody, almost melancholic.
