Chris Liebing announces landmark 100th release on CLR this April

The legendary German techno producer drops two originals and a remix from film composer and techno/trance pioneer Ralf Hildenbeutel.

‘Time’ and ‘Sup’ are two fierce and uncompromising techno tracks in the mould Liebing has become known for throughout his career. The remix from Hildenbeutel, a collaborator on Liebing’s LPs for Mute Records and a member of pioneering trance acts Cygnus X and Earth Nation, displays his cinematic composing chops with a sparse, atmospheric take.

The support the label has had over the years is incredible, and I’m really lucky to have been able to release so much music from so many great talents. Liebing’s iconic CLR imprint started in 1999 and returned in 2021 after a five-year hiatus. Initially titled Chris Liebing Records until 2010, then Create Learn Realize until the break, and now Create Learn Repeat, CLR reemerged in the techno underground with releases from Liebing himself, followed by newcomer Frankie Bromley, upstarts Hertz Collision & Gene Richards Jr, and DEAS, as well as veteran Luke Slater.

Pan-Pot remain at the top of the tree as consistently one of the most in demand DJ duos in the world and their label Second State has featured high flying artists such as Stephan Bodzin, Amelie Lens, Gary Beck, Grindvik, Shlomi Aber and Flug.

The new release sees Berliner Michael Klein return to the imprint. Being quite the regular in recent years, he released a couple of EPs just last year called Nokaut and No Mercy as well as being found on Sven Väth’s Cocoon, Marco Faraone’s UNCAGE, Coyu’s Suara and Andre Kronert’s ODD / EVEN.

Following a remix appearance of Chris Liebing on Nicole Moudaber’s MOOD imprint last year, the pair now team up on Liebing’s celebrated CLR imprint for ‘I Will Be A Devil Until I Am An Angel’ this November.

First up, ‘Watch Me Choose You’ launches with a clap-heavy groove shot through with bleeps and squelches, a subtle serpentine acid-line woven among its sturdy drums. It’s a high-intensity, peak-time offering followed by ‘When You Are Near’, another dancefloor bomb which continues with additional bursts of acid sprayed on top of its cavernous kick drums before dropping into a mind-melting frenzy at the halfway mark.

It was only a matter of time until we’d do a joint original release, and here it is! Klint starts his ‘Immersive Culture’ EP on Chris Liebing’s CLR with ‘Tomahawk’. Raw, distinctive sonics and chunky drums make for a dancefloor trip followed by the stomping peaks of ‘Forces’, where the RSPX and Planet Rhythm artist exploits a chopped-up vocal sample, keeping the energy high. 

Klint then continues with ‘All In’, a late-night hypnotic roller, before the title track ‘Immersive Culture’ closes down affairs via quality spoken vocal work and tumbling sequence stabs. This first EP of the year packs a punch and sets a precedent for the heady, multi-purpose techno we can expect from CLR in 2024.

The hypnotic ‘Ping Pong Ball Gag’ sees bbbbbb recors’ Bjarki utilise squirming, bubbly percussion, quirky bleeps, and a dark vocal. It’s loopy, full of character, and marks the Icelandic artist’s debut on Chris Liebing’s CLR, following previous releases on NIX, Mute, and his own bbbbbb, a visually impressive home for underground, off-kilter techno.

Bjarki’s ‘Ping Pong Ball Gag’, initially produced in 2014 and subsequently hammered on the dancefloor by Chris Liebing until today, is an occasion which calls for a remix from Liebing himself, turning the intense droning rhythm of the original into a real warehouse stomper by infusing it with 909 claps and switching up its whirring percussion, making for a fantastic combination of elements while embracing the unpredictability of the original.

Founded by influential techno lynchpin Chris Liebing in 1999 and reemerging in 2021 after a five-year hiatus, Create Learn Repeat (CLR) has played host to a range of artists like DEAS, Shlomi Aber, Drumcell, Truncate and more, with a focus on developing newer acts in the scene such as B. Riley, The Southern, and Klint. The imprint now adds Bjarki to its roster with a curveball, quality release we didn’t know we needed but which should be a staple in any artist’s library.
