If you like your techno bruised and bleeding, you’d have taken note of Manchester’s AnD. Over the last few years they’ve been making their presence known with a series of unbridled releases for labels like Horizontal Ground, Black Sun Records, Repitch Recordings and their own self-titled stable. “Harder” has indeed been the duo’s mantra, bellowed stony-faced from the rasping recedes of industrial’s brittle outer rim. But it hasn’t always been this way. Before the broken bones and caustic, pitch-black tear-outs there’s been deep and dubby reprieves, techy dubstep and even washed-out drum and bass on the likes of Idle Hands, Project Squared and Hidden Hawaii all with equaled astuteness.

It’s clear there’s little out of AnD’s reach, and they’re certainly not bowing down to anyone. ‘Kundalini’ then, AnD’s debut EP for Electric Deluxe, is not something to be taken lightly. The EP opens with a trio of patented AnD-style monsters, cataclysmic techno siblings all venomous and rusted through. It’s a dark and unforgiving trail with these guys as drill sergeant, until “ICDBYC” that is. Not quite the calm before the storm, here we have AnD pull back from the bloody onslaught to turn a cleaner, more calculated sort of weapon. Cool and tactical shadow skulking, trimmed with IDM. This one is just as deadly!

Dutch veteran producer Joost van der Vleuten, better known as Namatjira, delivers a crisp three-track EP on Paul Hazendonk's Manual Music imprint, under its MNL sub-label. This release marks another chapter in his long-standing dedication to the progressive house sound. 

Featuring three brand-new original compositions, 'Darien,' 'Distinctness,' and 'Chaco' , the EP showcases Namatjira's signature melodic depth and refined production, continuing his trusted tradition in the genre. It's a succinct yet compelling addition to the discography of one of progressive house's most steadfast artists.

Illusions of Power is about political corruption, the collapse and seizure of control, sparring nations, war, drugs, gangs and the fraudulent, media systems that spin it all into rolling, fear-mongering 24 hour loops. Illusions of Power is about the horrors of the modern world and a humanity haunted by its bloodied past. But as every long dark tunnel comes to an end, Illusions of Power too has its glimmers of hope.

Written with an arsenal of hardware gear from the Londoner’s studio in Berlin, Dax J’s Electric Deluxe debut is a militant, yet atmospherical dancefloor assault. As he has proven over a slew of EPs for EarToGround Records and labels like LDNWHT, Deeply Rooted, Clergy and his own Monnom Black label, his sound is a compelling and thoroughly contemporary one. Dax J’s productions are typically mercurial, informed by the past and fortified with a wide range of influences from acid and ambient, to jungle and drum & bass. His EPs are rich, kaleidoscopic ventures involving an array of tempos and moods, and Illusions of Power is no different.

In “Reign Of Terror” and “Harry The Hatchet” on the A-side, and “Zulu Nation” and “The Quest” on the flip, Dax J flexes sinewy techno muscle in his rave-inciting idiom where the new and the oldschool collide. Then in the angst-ridden “Cartagena Square” (built around field recordings from Cartagena in South America) and dreamy breakbeats of “Breaking Visions” Illusions of Power present two very different diversions from the dance. In one there is light and a sense of relief; in the other, shadowy omens of the world are massing. The future is full of promise, but be on your guard.

Markus Suckut follows with his unique approach on ‘Dirty Daddy’ where heaviness reigns supreme as hefty percussion, hypnotic rhythms and swirling atmospherics culminate into a far flung journey into the vast expanse. After a ten EPs in few years on respected labels such as Clergy, ARTS, Mord and an acclaimed debut album on Skryptöm, young and promising techno producer Kmyle is back on the French label Astropolis Records with ‘Keroual EP’, 3 originals and a stunning remix from French veteran Zadig. A contemporary EP that embodies all Kmyle’s technical and elegant techno, energy and his singular melodic synth work.

First up, A1 with the eponym track ‘Keroual’, in reference to Astropolis’ setting, a beautiful trip to its fairyland and a large electronic universe, with emotive melodies and light chords. An enchanting meditative and dancing track, as well-suited for the dancefloor as it is for home listening.

Samy steps the tempo up on A2 with ‘Telegraph’ and falls into darkness, undulating slowly in an evil dance, with a tense melody, a rumble bassline and a hypnotic techno. A metallic tune that works on every dancefloor.

On the flip side, ‘Syncopa’ keeping the drive from A2, seems tailored for a huge night with a forceful kick and a booming energy on its introduction, rapidly caught by a dramatic, intense and sizzling melody, enigmatic atmospheres and euphoric chords. A big tune for a big floor with a hammering beat and a delicious dark groove.

French well respected producer Zadig ends the EP with a brutal and gloomy version of ‘Keroual’, under a Day is Dying remix, a wink to his hardcore project. An obsessful kick with a ravey '90s vibe turning violently the track in a stripped-back hardcore version and its intensity. Uncompromising and raw, quite cinematic at the beginning, slow-burning to madness. A pleasant chaos anthem dedicated to industrial atmospheres.

This new release from Astropolis Records is a perfect blend between old school rave culture, rock-solid tunes and a modern palate of techno, feeding a melodic and melancholic sensitivity.
