A conversation with DJ Cent about her formative experiences at Detroit's legendary Club Heaven, some classic records, some very humble recounts of her own accomplishments as a DJ,  and the love she had for her main inspiration, Ken Collier, the Godfather of Detroit Techno.  

A largely unheralded figure, Ken Collier was Detroit's contemporary of Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan and Tee Scott. Beginning in the mid-late 70's Collier was one of Detroit's first DJays to hit the scene, playing with a collective called True Disco. For over twenty years Ken was the figurehead of Detroit's underground club scene. From playing early 80's social club parties such as Chari Vari which gave shape to Detroit's 'Progressive' scene to night clubs such as Studio 54, Downstairs Pub and Todd's Sway Lounge to name a few. Ken's career peaked at Club Heaven, an after hours gay club that was the converging space for many lifestyles and strains of Detroit's culture.

What is Sonic Gates?
We are trying something new! A series of conversations aimed at giving space and adding texture to Detroit's rich electronic music history. These interviews will correspond with parties and other projects to tell these stories and keep these fascinating first hand experiences from getting lost in time forever!
