I spent a few mornings in a windswept greater Prairie Chicken Lek the last few days. The conversation going on amongst these amazing birds was just adorable. It was like these beautiful girls walking into a bar while loads of blokes were trying to chat them up, pumping their chests up and being the biggest dick! This is a two minute excerpt from this morning.

Great Horned Owl duet

Tetepare is a wilderness island of the Solomons group in the western Pacific. It is entirely covered in primary rainforest, and one of the few places where the nature of this region can be found and heard intact. Elsewhere throughout the Solomons, timber companies have stripped the forests to the detriment of not only the ecosystems and surrounding reefs, but often the livelihood of traditional peoples. Tetepare is sadly the last, truly wild island. 

We begin listening as surf breaks on the barrier reef that surrounds the island. Then, in the darkenss before dawn, we move into the primary rainforest itself. Kingfishers, megapodes, cuckoos, owls, insects and horned frogs call in dark. The ethereal piping of monarchs signals the coming dawn, and with it are heard the soft songs of the island's endemic white-eyes.

Later, the forest presents a diversity of tropical birdsong; metallic starlings feed nearby, lorikeets screech as they wing overhead, singing parrots and ducorp's cockatoos give melodious cries, fruit pigeons boom deeply, while cicadas chorus in gentle waves. The sounds of two species are especially impressive; the un-bird-like growls of buff-breasted coucals, and the calls of magnificent blythe's hornbills as they move around the forest on heavy wingbeats.

A beautiful morning of birdsong unfolds in one of India's rare lowland forests.

Spotted Owlets give their last calls as the dawn chorus begins. Indian Scimtar Babblers are heard on all sides with their warm tonal songs, along with White-browed Fantails and the contrapuntal rhythms of Tailorbirds. Parakeets fly through the forest, Malabar squirrels call loudly, langur 'whoop's fill the forest, and woodpeckers drum overhead.

This recording will take you into a pristine wild place.

A family of Laughing Kookaburras throw back their heads, Magpies carol in the morning sunlight, and a pair of Pied Butcherbirds give a sublime performance of synchronised duetting. In cooler forests, we hear the extraordinary mimcry of the Lyrebird on its display mound, and a forest ringing with the clear calls of Bellbirds. We conclude with the acrobatic and beautiful song of the Rufous Whistler.

The wild and wonderful calling of gibbons is a highlight of the Thai rainforests.

Our recording begins in the predawn, with frogs croaking from a streamside pool and the first birdsong carrying through the dense forest. Bulbuls, laughing thrushes, scimitar babblers, and the heavy wingbeats of hornbills all contribute to a tropical ambience.

Eventually a group of gibbons appear, swinging acrobatically through the treetops. The males call loudly to advertise territory, their rich, expressive voices echoing through the forest. Later we hear several individuals calling to each other alternately over great distances.
