Dystopian Future Synths and Strings

A homage to John Williams with various other influences brought in. Quartal - and quintal - harmony is employed and the instrumentation features a standard large orchestra.

Fanfare Wars

An ode to the Latin stylings of Tito Puente, infused with a minimalist Steve Reich influence. My ever-present piano ostinati feature liberally on the piece, and latin percussion instruments are utilised.

Music For Latin America

Minimalism phasing and polyrhythm techniques applied to a rock/pop song structure. The piece is based around a simple piano ostinato which - after experimentation with aforementioned beat misplacement - changes course and interweaves between the other instruments. Instrumentation uses a fusion of rock/pop, film score and minimalism.

A marimba led piece which features a rock/pop rhythm section fused with mallet instruments. A short piece with a rather frantic feel. Various melodic ostinati are built upon one another on top of a somewhat rarely changing underlying harmony.

Music For Glaciers

A stripped back arrangement for piano, marimba, cello ensemble and djembe. Based around three distinct piano ostinati, the piece sees the marimba harmonise at various points throughout, whilst the cello ensemble move gradually in 3 or 4 part quintal chords.

As there is no diegetic sound for the short, the entire piece had to be scored and this was an essential part of making the pace and rhythm of the film work. Hayden came on board the project late in post-production so had to tailor his work around what he was given. As I have no musical expertise whatsoever, I could not communicate with him in technical terms and instead approached it as I would when directing an actor; conveying the emotional beats and considerations of the story.

Hayden responded perfectly and seemed to fully understand what I was going for even when I felt I hadn't been very clear in my instructions.
