phase transition mix - Robert Lippok



I am very happy about the collaboration with Iranian internet radio Beshknow. I got to know them because they played a number of releases that were put out on raster media, including my last LP, Applied Autonomy.  I asked them if they would be interested in broadcasting a mix of nature, water and glaciers as reference points. And I also asked if there are glaciers in Iran and if it would be possible to get sound from them. I am overjoyed that the members of Beshknow Radio took on the adventure of a five-hour journey to Kholeno Mountain despite the tense pandemic situation in Iran. The photos they sent me illustrate the dramatic situation of the local glaciers. I am also very grateful that an artist I admire very much, Teho Teardo, has contributed an exclusive piece to the mix.  While searching for suitable pieces, I came across an unreleased piece in my archives that my former band to rococo red composed for the exhibition New Ocean by American artist Doug Aitken at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Three pieces of the mix are of course from the book / CD release Glacier Music II, a collaboration of the Goethe Institute Georgia and the label Establishment.Towards the Glacier is from the first Glacier Music CD, it is a collaboration with Kyrgyz master Askat Jetigen. For the first time Beshknow Radio will collaborate with USMARADIO Interdepartmental Research Centre for Radiophonic Studies / San Marino for this broadcast.

phase transition refers to the physical process of transition from ice to water, from water to water vapour and vice versa.

Temple of Fervor

Spring is finally here. Everything is waking up and hope is coming back into our lives. You can hear it in the Jaro / Spring series of field recordings by our favourite Czech sound artist Tomáš Šenkyřík. Kyiv and the whole of Ukraine are still resisting enormous russian aggression. On the album Kyiv Eternal, Ukrainian artist Heinali composed hymns to the capital, which had faced a five-week onslaught at the beginning of the war. 

There are also three great reissues (Richter Band - Czech, Nenad Jelić i Laza Ristovski - Serbian, Oleksandr Yurchenko - Ukrainian), testaments to the vibrancy and innovation of the Eastern European experimental scene of the 80s and 90s. Don't forget to include in your AOTY list the debut album of the Emer project by Marija Rasa, a Lithuanian native living in Brussels.

Glacier Music II grew out of a journey – a shared trip into the icy Greater Caucasus mountains of Georgia, as artists from Armenia, Georgia, and Germany collected visceral sensations of nature to channel into potent musical collaborations. Those mountains form a thread across neighboring but diverse musical traditions, and so from this fragile environment, an international collaboration between multi-talented producers and performers sound a poignant, personal note of urgency.

In his music, you can hear the vibrant Mediterranean palette and the rich diversity of Armenian medieval culture. Hayk, a multi-instrumentalist specializing in Armenian woodwinds, brings forth the entire range of his cultural identity from his subconsciousness through these instruments. As a person of mixed heritage, blending East Mediterranean and Armenian cultures, he has never sought to be purely Armenian in his music or in his self-identity. His music is always a fusion and an ongoing experiment. It is never complete, constantly evolving, always searching for something new and consistently surprising.
