Each piece is named after a rare cloud in an attempt to associate them with sounds through utilization of synthesis techniques including pulsar synthesis--as coined by Curtis Roads--and cross synthesis as well as filtering and feedback, while a good number of field recordings are employed.

Elif Yalvaç composes electronic music and studies Sonic Arts (MA) at Istanbul Technical University.

Computer Room is part of an ongoing field recording project focusing on recording of data centers. Field recordings were taken so far at HPC Imperial College London and UHeM Istanbul Technical University by Hazal Elif Yalvaç and Michael Bearpark. In the composition, the machines generating sounds as a result of workload are treated like ambient music and noise music machines. To this end, recordings are either processed intensively or left almost unprocessed to draw attention to the timbral and pitch characteristics and achieve a musical composition, i.e., music played by machines used at data centres.

The sounds here are random glitches generated by a laptop that, at some point, was not able to handle a YouTube compilation video which features Arnold Schwarzenegger's screaming from various films. No editing except for volume intervention. Recorded with a Tascam device directly from a set of average speakers in a living room.

L'appel du Vide

Elif Yalvaç (née Hazal Elif Yalvaç) is a producer, composer and guitarist. Her music has received international acclaim including reviews in The Guardian, and The Wire, alongside features and broadcasts including WDR and BBC. Her works embrace opposites: microsound glitches and slow builds; celestial beauty and abrasive energy. Her latest solo album “Vection” was released in April 2024 by the Amsterdam-based experimental music label Moving Furniture Records under the Eliane Tapes series dedicated to Eliane Radigue.

Elif collaborates with others extensively, including her avantgarde metal project Diaries of Destruction with bassist Jordan Muscatello and her album Green Drift with Expert Sleepers (September 2022). She has performed with a wide range of artists internationally including Eraldo Bernocchi, Colin Edwin, Jon Durant, Darkroom, and Jono Podmore.

Elif holds an MA degree in Sonic Arts from Istanbul Technical University and regularly delivers workshops and podcasts on electronic music including co-hosting “Talk to the Chip” on Resonance FM with Jono Podmore. Elif teaches electronic music at GSMD in London. She is the curator of the bi-monthly live electronics event series “Heart of Noise Cambridge” at Cambridge Junction. Endorsed by Arts Council England, Elif is based in the UK with a Global Talent Visa.
