I’ve never been great at the physical aspect of running. I struggle to keep a steady pace, and at the end my body feels completely deflated. Though running is more than being out of breath. For me, running is a time where I can truly connect with myself. Whenever I feel like giving up, my thoughts are always there to push me on towards the finish line, and it’s amazing to see how far I can persevere by coordinating with my mind. However, outside the realm of running, I find it hard to keep the same mental relationship. During low periods, everything feels monotonous and I fail to see any positives. The ‘grey field’ in my song alludes to these times, and how life feels like a dull, long run. The ‘pink roses’ symbolise good memories or thoughts that make me happy. The song’s monologue visualises a vast grey field, occasionally adorned with pink roses, providing a sense of hope and comfort away from the melancholy. These roses keep me running, but as they shrivel and their colour fades, I’m left with my own thoughts to help me make the finish line.

‘on hold’ is all about being able to cope with the terrors of the outside world while keeping the panic of our minds at bay. The window (as well as being a literal window) symbolises our exposure to the outside world in the form of the news and media. We can get so hooked to the TV that it sparks unnecessary fear and can cause adverse effects on our mental wellbeing, especially in times like this where all sorts of misinformation is being spread. The song also touches on the scale of this pandemic; the whole world has essentially come to stop. The world’s pause button has been pressed and our lives are now on hold...

'hazy sofia’ is the small, bedroom project of London-based teenager Aniya Sofia. Having grown up playing the piano and flute from a young age, music has encompassed a large portion of her life.
