Professor Ware is a leading academic authority on the U.S. Black Radical Tradition, Africa and Islam. Since 2004 he has been a full faculty member at Northwestern, Michigan, and now UC Santa-Barbara.

02/14/2025 - Professor Butch Ware, 2026 Green Party candidate for Governor of California

This episode features host and HC4US board member, Taiji T.  Miyagawa, a third-generation Japanese American activist and musician.  A California native, he comes from a lineage of U.S.  citizens who were stripped of their constitutional rights and imprisoned behind barbed wire during World War II for no crime other than being Japanese.  Taiji leads API for CalCare. With over four decades of experience as a grassroots empowerment activist and musician, Taiji has been involved in multiple social justice arenas, participated in numerous electoral campaigns and led voter mobilization efforts.

On the cultural worker front, Taiji has collaborated with prominent Japanese American artists such as Nobuko Miyamoto, playwright Philip Kan Gotanda, the band Hiroshima and poets Lawson Inada and the late Amy Uyematsu.  He currently co-facilitates the Nikkei Music Reclamation Project and leads an improvisational music project, Torio.

In this episode, Taiji interviews guest guest Chancee Martorell of the Thai Community Development Center (thaicdc.org).  They discuss the challenges faced by the Thai immigrant community.

On this episode, your host Taiji T. Miyagawa is a third-generation Japanese American with over four decades of experience as a grassroots empowerment activist and musician. Taiji’s guest is Dara Yin of Khmer (Cambodian) descent who grew up in Long Beach, California.  He is a program specialist for API RISE (http://www.API-Rise.org) and works to empower the community to fight against racism, marginalization and separatism.

Dara was sent to prison at the age of 19 under a “Life Without Parole” sentence.  In 2022 his sentence was commuted to 18-years-to-life.  As he had been in prison for 20 years, the Board of Paroles determined Dara was suitable for re-entry.  He has been home since November 2022.  

Currently pursuing a Master of Education in Learning Design and Technology degree at University of Southern CA, Dara believes that education is the answer to ending poverty, systemic racism and violence.

A California native, he comes from a lineage of U.S. citizens who were stripped of their constitutional rights and imprisoned behind barbed wire during World War II for no crime other than being Japanese.  Taiji leads API for CalCare.  With over four decades of experience as a grassroots empowerment activist and musician, Taiji has been involved in multiple social justice arenas, participated in numerous electoral campaigns and led voter mobilization efforts.

During this episode, Taiji reviews the latest health care related news and events effecting Asian and Pacific Islander communities, from health disparities to hate crimes, and emphasizing the need for CalCare (California Guaranteed Health Care for All Act).

With coworkers, Alex has unionized her workplace three times, served on both organizing and bargaining committees, and successfully filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board. Alex is also the co-coordinator of the nonprofit circle of the Democratic Socialists of America - LA Labor Committee (https://dsa-la.org/committees/labor-committee-platform) and is a committee member of the Mother Jones Foundation Committee.

In this episode, Sheila Bates (http://hc4us.org/bod-sheila) is your host with guest Emilee Bargoma (https://bitesizebio.com/29714/phd-staying-positively-headstrong-determined), who holds a doctorate in Cell and Molecular Biology and a Master’s in Biology and Microbiology.  Emilee began her career at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, contributing to the Biotechnology and Planetary Protection Program, before focusing on diseases disproportionately affecting individuals of African descent.

Her research includes published work on gene-editing mutations and acute vaso-occlusive crises in Sickle Cell Disease (https://www.cityofhope.org/clinical-program/sickle-cell-disease).  Emilee has also led a team that conducted preclinical safety evaluations of drugs, drug products, and medical devices in cellular models.  Currently, she is transitioning into the startup space, serving as Chief Scientific Officer and co-founder of a biotechnology company.  Emilee is also the founder of a Black-owned, Black- and Brown-staffed science consulting firm dedicated to advancing equity and innovation in scientific research.
