Really beautiful. I'm enjoying the dancing of the keys!

A few weeks ago as I was soon expecting my first child, my father wrote me a note saying that his one wish was that I would take what he taught me as a father, and echo that even further to my son- to be an even "better" father than he was. It took me aback wondering how I could possibly be a better parent than he was, though he did have a point: The hope is to take everything we learned from our upbringing and expand upon that to ensure each generation progresses just a little bit further. 

I wrote this as I reflected on that sentiment and for the wild adventure that was soon to come. So for my Piano Day 2021 contribution, this one is for my Padre.

Padre

Satellite is the 4th album from Graham Richardson's Last Days. Richardson who is now well known for his cinematic electro-acoustic pieces that effortlessly invoke an almost inconceivably tangible imagery has this time around turned ever inward for Satellite's core inspiration. While Richardson credits the album with certain personal themes in tow he's more apt to let the listener gather their own meaning of the album's affinity of satellite and stars. The song New Transmission features vocals by Beth Arzy (Aberdeen, Trembling Blue Stars) and could very well sum up the album's apex while delivering the most pop affected Last Days song to date. Satellite is out Sept 17th on n5MD

In December of 2017, Uwe and I started working on a project developing a particular musical language in exchange of thematic ideas. In my London studio, I would record minimal piano pieces, often late at night, sometimes with the windows open, to capture every sound resonating from the instrument. Uwe would deconstruct these compositions even further, extracting the brush of my fingers, the fall of the hammers, the breath of the strings. We both aspired to delve into this instrument and play with all of the sounds living within, as heard from the inside. Many ideas would come from Uwe in the form of a sketch, an aural vocabulary, or a sonic brochure, which I would interpret through a pair of closely placed microphones. There are even fewer melodies and even more spacial pianism on here than in my previous solo reductionist works, which Uwe so masterfully extracted with his experienced ear. In this incredible partnership, we have discovered a new dimension within the piano, which we are honoured to share with you.
