Just yesterday I shared the news of a recently released album by Sinemis (that's Sine Buyuka) who is the founder of Injazero Records. And today I'm happy to follow up that announcement with a sequel release to the acclaimed Volutes (2020) by Snowdrops, which is a French-based chamber duo of Christine Ott and Mathieu Gabry. For this follow-up, they are joined by violist Anne-Irène Kempf, who also appears on this seventh and last piece on the album, which I am premiering for you today. Here, the piano, played by Ott, and the Rhodes in the hands of Gabry, create a soft fabric of acoustic harmonies that lift up the veil with strings and lush pads. It's a gentle track, which slowly evolves into an ever-expanding space where it disperses into the ether. "The piece develops a lot around repetitive but evolving motifs played by all three," says Gabry of music on "Mémoires Élementaires". "We are more and more distant from each other, but still connected. The viola played by Anne-irene takes the lead, and the Rhodes dissolves into a deep magma. The phrases slow down, and the reverberated space becomes larger." Perhaps the most cinematic out of the seven tracks on the album, the piece beautifully concludes this sonic painting which is a crossover genre, somewhere between modern classical, post-folk, and electro-acoustic music.

Mix For Art Of Beatz Radio March 3, 2023

I’ve got an exceptional podcast for you today, folks. It’s not a mix but rather a continuous, single, long-playing track composed by Fields We Found. I’m sharing this fantastic music as an opening to an introduction to a brand new label, quiet details, which I will be profiling this week. Founded this year by the artist behind this piece, the imprint focuses on each artist’s interpretation of the phrase after which the label is named. Spanning multiple genres, the upcoming releases explore this idea in each artist’s unique way, with the catalogue and upcoming schedule including names such as the humble bee, Fields Line Cartographer, Luke Sanger, bvdub, zakè, and many others [with nearly two years of releases planned already!], whom I’m sure we’ll find on these pages. Each release will be accompanied by handmade artwork, with the music and each artist’s intuition as a guide to the palette and structure, available as a physical item with bespoke packaging and individual prints. It’s a wonderful series to follow from the very beginning, and I am honoured to be a part of this introduction to you. I am always happy to bring new sounds to your ears [and mine!], and today I’ve got a mix showcasing some special selections from the upcoming boutique music festival named Q3Ambientfest, which will take place this year in June. Creating a perfect balance between some established and emerging artists of various genres and diverse origins, this event showcases a wide range and reach of the music scene. The festival [and this mix] is curated by Brueder Selke, East Berlin-born, Potsdam-based, multi-instrumental composers Sebastian and Daniel Selke, who are also known under their pseudonym CEEYS. “Each year, Brueder Selke invite like-minded friends and renowned artists to meet on a common, physical stage, and, with performances that range between academic avant-garde and accessible pop, develop a kind of cinematic music that holds a mirror up to and makes audible the eclectic architecture of the world-famous Filmstadt Potsdam, with its neoclassical palaces and socialist brutalism.” For this hour-long showcase, they have selected many pieces traversing the roster, including music by Jakob Lindhagen, Vargkvint, Mabe Fratti, Julia Reidy, Yair Elazar Glotman, their very own Brueder Selke project, and many more.

With releases and music styles across a variety of labels over the years, it has been Yalex’s more experimental ambient work that has stood out amongst her catalog, and in Fantasy Zone, we find Mary fine-tuning this sound to reflect the work of a true architect of storytelling, mood and atmosphere. 

Drawing influences from her day-to-day surroundings, Fantasy Zone begins with more vivid pieces; softer melodies and clearer instrumentation, represented as much in song titles such as Air, After Rain Comes Sun, and Half Light of Dawn. The second half of the album transitions into a future state, as Yalex draws on darker manifestations - perhaps intrinsically influenced by the state of the world, and in particular her love of nature, we play witness to more storied, haunting atmospheres, distant voices and slowly shifting gravitational chord movements. Dystopian-bound or pure fantasy, Yalex depicts a future that mirrors some of the more poignant, thought-provoking work of great synthesizer soundtracks of the past. 

Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri, and featuring artwork by Noah M / Keep Adding, Fantasy Zone will be available on Purple Smoke 12” and digital.

This album is the culmination of an ongoing exploration of musical and sonic concepts, including mutation, evolution over time, generative patterns, sampling and re-sampling. Several tracks from the album have been performed, presented, and utilized in various formats, such as concerts,
performances, or installations-either in their entirety or specific sections.

The six tracks represent the distilled essence of a creative process that commenced in 2020, characterized by continual iteration, variation, and the transformation of formless clusters of melodies, harmonies, or mere textures into somewhat finished compositions.

Each musical piece has been a companion to me for an unusually extended period (something it rarely happens in my process). Much like features in a landscape, these tracks have shaped a geography of memories, places, and fleeting moments over an exceptionally prolonged time in my life (with some, like Bancal, tracing back to 2014). Consequently, the personal and emotional weight they carry is significant and necessitates being acknowledged to make room for the new and unexpected.

In Valencian, "una geografia temporal" translates to “a temporary geography."
