Ambient mixes

Today I'm spending time with a new project inspired by the sacred, supernatural, and the occult. Kinn is a London-based artist interested in exploring the outer edges of mysticism with their exquisite palette of dark ambience, atmospheric cinematic, and ghostly noir-fi. The track I am featuring today is taken off the debut album, Anamnesis Landscape, which is formed around the notion that habit is informed by past memories, transpiring through previous existence, and shared by a collective experience. "It is believed by many sects that this knowledge is stored in the Landscape, lending a sense of divinity and sacred value to mundane physical objects." The widespread, carefully treated textures, impeccable timing and control of the aural movement, all mesmerise, conjure, and compel the listener to follow along into the obscure corridors of the unearthly and the metaphysical. "Hypnotic electronics are woven into sullen, brooding drones which find themselves between density and sparsity, challenging listeners to tread the line between comfort and discomfort." Fans of Roly Porter (in particular Kistvaen), Ital Tek (see Bodied), Constantine (I'm thinking Hades here), and, of course, Ben Chatwin (Ghost In The Machine), will find themselves right at home in this forgotten, spectral place. And although I am highlighting today "Black Sinking Clouds," I urge you to check out the album in full. Which, by the way, is about to be available on a "black as night" 180g heavyweight vinyl. Highly recommended.

Upfront 002: Air Texture

Silent Season is proud to present Segue's third full-length LP with the label. On his new album, Jordan Sauer explores a new facet of West Canadian natural history. Four thousand years ago, Western Canada's First Nations people migrated into the fjords and rainforests carved out by the retreating glaciation of the last Ice Age. The Island is a tribute to Canada's prehistory and the spiritual journey of a people entering a forever-altered landscape to call their home.

 While Segue's last album very much explored a cross section journey of British Columbia from the mountains to the sea, The Island explores the hidden coastlines and inlets that pepper a still-mysterious landscape, fragile in its uniqueness and isolation.

 The album features new tricks on full display in addition to the signature, instantly recognizable sounds of Segue's music. "Mirage" goes full post-rock at the end with a gliding climax of guitar over a gorgeous pad of dubby synths. "Beacon Point" swings like a stone skipping on the glassy surface of a hidden lake in the Strathcona Region. "Desolation Sound" features an almost-acid synth line that weaves in and out like the interlocking patterns on a Salish cedar basket.

 Throughout the album, each song spreads out beautifully as a reflection of the place or thing it's named after and paints a stunning portrait of BC's natural wealth. At first glance it seems like a tourist's guide, but when you listen deeper, The Island blossoms into something deeply personal and moving–a sonic imprint of places in relation to culture. One listen will put you right on a remote Island in the wilderness, surrounded by ancient trees and stories from generations long forgotten. 

The album features an analogue mix down and mastering on tape through a Studer A80, ½ inch tape machine by Stefan Betke of Scape Mastering. The Island is available on limited editions 2x12" black vinyl, CD, and digital formats.

Prairie is the project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Marc Jacobs, hailing from Brussels with roots in The Netherlands. On stage, Prairie plays with two or three musicians and together they re-create a free association of musical ideas and atmospheres. Prairie has played in selected venues and festivals across Europe  and for instance toured with Apparat.

“And the Bird Said: Cut Me Open and Sing Me” is the second full length album on Denovali Records.

This album was inspired by the silence of the birds, by the tone between a mother and her daughter, by the Sandsnipe twins, by constant wailing sirens, by the memory of a Vangelis track. Composed in the city, in his studio Les Lacs and in the mountains of the French Cévennes, Jacobs integrates his various recording locations into his magnificent sound design. By using various recording techniques, analog gear, guitar pedals, synths, amps and human voices, “And the Bird Said: Cut Me Open and Sing Me” creates a fountain of sound layers which coalesce to synthetic and noise infused manipulations, dramatic crescendos and subtle field recordings.

Jacobs focuses on melodies, sometimes hidden melodies, or straight out melodies that took him back to various musical influences, current ones but also from his past, lurking into pop and loving imperfection. The lyrics of "Cut me Open" are the spine of the record, the scenario where various species of birds lead the way, and where each track is a short chapter of the flight.

Jacobs once again showcases a deep sensitivity to narrative and rich cinematic textures by creating a technicolor soundtrack.

We fought in the format wars wielding consumer level melody and parking lot chords tuned to bird scale and after school static. 
We knew that nothing would ever happen and that we were never here. Our lives are not events. We are the eternal moments of isolated reveries and home video laments. 
We are 3:30pm. We are the hot strawberry table outside the Dairy Queen and that pack of matches we keep from that gas station in Oregon. 
We are these songs. 
What do they say? 
They tell us that once before we were the whole of the river but now we are just jewel toned drops pouring out alone over the cliff's edge. 
They walk with us to the ocean's mirror to practice our speeches but they know that on our way home we will speak only to ourselves. 
Nostalgia is cheap but elegy is necessary and these tracks are written as a ceremony for our wounded present using the forgotten past. 
Will you remember us when we are the river again?
