Stationary Travels started about two years ago as a journey of musical discovery (thanks in no small part to Headphone Commute, by the way). One of the first revelations I encountered was a very vibrant electronic music scene coming out of Iran. Those who have been paying attention know it encompasses much more than just ambient and modern classical, but these are the styles that have resonated the most with me personally. This mix exclusively features artists from that scene I have been listening to recently. I find each of these tracks to be captivating and rich with emotional depth and I think the music here speaks to the ocean inside all of us. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Psy is in my mind - Lost in Ambient Sounds

Today I'm featuring a track by a Toronto based composer, Joshua Van Tassel, taken from his upcoming album, titled Dance Music Volume II : More Songs for Slow Motion, scheduled to be released in September of this year on Backward Music. During these troubled times, I feel like I keep going back to cinematic, ambient, and sombre music more and more. Almost every email I receive begins with "How are you holding up?" and it's almost awkward to admit that I'm okay, obliged to all this music that surrounds me to keep me centred, calm, and virtually connected to musicians that outpour their soul. Such is the case with music by Van Tassel. "Every day we are exposed to scenes of despair, ugliness, and struggle," says Joshua in the intro, "and I wanted to make a really beautiful album." The album is inspired by an electronic musical instrument named Ondes Martenot which is played by moving a metal ring along a wire (generating oscillations in the transistors). And "like the instrument that inspired it [...] the music is elegant and expressive, the score to a movie inside your head." The "Eternal Turtle" is a slow blooming piece, featuring The Venuti String Quartet, and Van Tassel on the electronics, piano, and of course the Ondea, the modernized version of the instrument.

"‘Eternal Turtle’ was the first piece I recorded for “Dance Music Volume 2”, and features only the Ondea. I had gotten the instrument about 2 months prior, and had been practicing every day, very slowly, and trying to play in tune. It’s very similar in tuning principle to a violin, where the slightest finger turn can cause the note you’re playing to be sharp or flat. I had started to experiment with more effects pedals as well, and created the ambience you hear at the very beginning of the track almost by accident withe a Chase Bliss MOOD pedal. For some reason, the sound immediately made me think of a giant, slow, and very old turtle moving slowly through and even older forest. I improvised the main line that runs through out the piece thinking about how this creature would move, then layered everything else immediately after. Compared to the other pieces on the album which in some cases took weeks, this one came out in one sitting and was the first time I felt like I had touched on the sound of the album I wanted to make. It was a lovely gift from a turtle I hope to thank in person someday." --Joshua Van Tassel

This album was conceived in Moscow during the Spring of 2018, when Dmitry Vasilyev organized the concert of Enrico Coniglio and Giulio Aldinucci at дом - Dom Cultural Centre. The album reflects the feelings of some very intensive days made of exchanges of ideas with a multitude of people involved in music (including Dmitry Taldykin of Dronarivm) and moments spent in isolated places out of the metropolis, like a forest not far from an army shooting range.

In this album, the two musicians wave together memories of an immutable past and questions about the present, giving birth to a sort of a requiem overflowing with lyricism. This music enlighten the dawn of a future that now appears more uncertain than ever, with frozen intensity and dramatic strength. As a message entrusted to the stars, it leaves as wondering if we can still change the course of events.

Glacis is Euan Millar-McMeeken, originally from Dundee but currently residing in London after a recent move South. Gavin Miller is an artist from Bradford, a city tucked away in the shadow of Leeds and he also records as Worriedaboutsatan. This British duo have released solo records through labels such as Lost Tribe Sound, Sound In Silence, Fluid Audio, Facture and Shimmering Moods to name but a few and in ‘Nothing Hurts Forever’ they have undertaken an exercise of collaboration, to sensitively compliment one another’s sound.

The result is a raw and intimate set of ten pieces for piano, strings, guitar and drone, which stop just short of what you might call modern classical music. Euan’s piano compositions retain an authentic character which deliberately documents the original recording environment, as marks are left on this album by creaking chairs, scraping floors and a family environment. Gavin’s strings and guitar adornments add a richness to these, emphasising texture and heightening a melancholic mood.

‘Nothing Hurts Forever’ is free from a clear concept, as Euan wrestled with homesickness having moved to England and was looking for a creative outlet in which to channel his feelings, or perhaps escape them. He was struck one day whilst listening to Frightened Rabbit, whose lead singer Scott Hutchinson had passed away in 2018. He recalled words that were said back then: ‘nothing hurts forever’. He remembered thinking at the time of Scott’s death that this wasn’t always true, as some things do in fact hurt forever. Perhaps this statement is more useful, to provide reassurance during a period of discomfort or unease. Adapting to changes, such as moving home or changing jobs for example. For bigger things, perhaps the hurt can lessen or fade over time or perhaps it never truly goes. From this point, the record felt like a follow-on to the previous Glacis album ‘The World Is A Little Lonelier Without You’, a tribute to his father.

With the adaptation and sensitive expansion of Euan’s piano environments, Gavin has retained all of the personal character which is so important to his peer. Yet the stories are given an extra dimension and something so personal becoming a collaboration opens this out to be a space for our own interpretation as the moods and track titles provide food for thought.

Well... you've heard the news already. The UK is going into another lockdown in just a few days, for about a month [more like six months, really], that is if the insanity which is actively scheduled to explode in the divided states tomorrow, does not leak its vile venom into the rest of the world [which, of course, it will]. Meanwhile, everyone on this side of the pond is preparing [sort of speak] to go into a house arrest. At least we've got the toilet paper, and the books, and the newly arrived synthesizers [mine is the Waldorf Iridium, which should keep me busy]. And of course, most importantly, we've got this music. "In a moment in which traveling has become a little more complicated, we have curated a collection of songs that encourage you to wander with the mind, aided by the exploratory sounds of ambient music." On December 4th, the German label group !K7 will release a 20-track compilation from artists around the world on its 7K! imprint. This is in line with their previous thematic collections, such as String Layers and Piano Layers, designed to showcase the amazing talent defining their respective genres. Ambient Layers compiles some of the top names from the scene, including Adam Wiltzie, Ryan Teague, Robert Lippok, Michel Banabila & Machinefabriek, Pjusk, and many others [I've got another surprise for you before the release date]. Today, however, I'm excited to premiere the opening piece by Roger Goula, titled "Ontology Of Things."

"Even if for a short period of time during lockdown, Nature started to breathe and to find its own balance again, thanks to human inactivity. Drawing on Timothy Morton’s theories, “Ontology of Things” is a reflection on how humans and non-humans interact. The acoustic strings sit on analogue electronics written using a probability algorithm, creating a quasi-dysfunctional symbiosis between them, simultaneously attracting and resisting each other." --Roger Goula

album, Overview Effect, was released in 2016 on Cognitive Shift (in partnership with One Little Independent imprint). His further credits include film scores and soundtracks for Shock Head Soul (2012), Make Us Dream (2018), and Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach (2020). So it would be of no surprise if you connect the cinematic atmospherics with the acoustic treatments on this piece. It’s a beautiful opener for the subsequent nineteen pieces, and there are many more new artists to explore! Stay tuned for more reveals!

Return to Sea and Sardinia:
January 2021 sees the centenary of D.H. Lawrence’s documented trip that resulted in his acclaimed book, Sea and Sardinia.

Return to Sea and Sardinia will follow in the footsteps of Lawrence’s journey exactly 100 years on from the day he set out.

Documenting the journey will be Daniele Marzeddu; a multi award-winning director experienced in documentary filmmaking.

The centre piece of the project will be the film that records Lawrence’s retraced journey - scheduled for release at arts and cultural venues across the UK and Sardinia in April 2021.

Return to Sea and Sardinia will also curate captured material into a limited-edition photo book, featuring a commentary about the locations and scenes as they existed in Lawrence’s day and also today, 100 years on.

Glåsbird joins the Return to Sea and Sardinia project to compose the soundtrack to the film, in which the approach will trace the signature sound/place compositional style.
